In an exciting but frightening transition from our desktops to a more virtualized way of handling our files and programs, Tonido seems to be the beautiful compromise between the two.

It allows you all the flexibility of having your documents and files accessible from anywhere via a URL you create, with the security of having them still stored safely in your computer or external harddrive. The Tonido website, is a cloud-based gateway where you create an account which will then allow you to access all of the files on your Windows, Mac or Linux computer from anywhere, even some phones, and use all of the features they have installed on their cloud.

This week, we will be giving away 20 WebShare Pro licenses and 4 Tonido Plugs, worth $700 in total. Find out how you can win one!

Some of the features of Tonido include:

  • The Tonido Workspace, which allows you to manage your calendar, contacts, tasks and files from anywhere.
  • One Click Webshare and Tonido Photos, which allow you to share your files (even very large ones) with family and friends or create photo albums open to the public. All of the sharing can be done with one single click, which creates the URL, allows you to choose who can see it, or if it will be public to anyone and view the history (who has seen the files).

It even allows you to set a date for the shares to expire, which means you can set the files to only be available for a certain period of time.

No more concerns about how to email that large file to your co-worker or how to send grandma the new video of Johnny taking his first steps without having to upload it to some public site.

  • A Jukebox, so you can stream all of your music from any computer or from your phone.

  • “Thots”, which are blog like journals that can be made live, like any other blog or shared with your friends and family only.
  • A web based Torrent Client.
  • Money Manager, which is a recent addition to Tonido. It is a free personal finance software. It allows you to keep track of your stocks and assets, create categories to better manage your finances and manage your bank accounts. It has enough features to give some paid services a run for their money.

  • Tonido Back Up. One of the greatest features of Tonido is that you can easily create backups of your files on other computers, no matter what file or operating system. It’s always a good idea to have a back up in a location other than where your main files are. That way, in case something happens at that location, you can retrieve your so important files from another computer. The back up feature simply copies all the files from Tonido to another computer with the click of a button. Think how simple changing computers or copying all your files to a laptop or remote computer can be with that feature.

Files also load with incredible speed on Tonido. I have used remote access programs, but what they do is display your desktop on another screen. The problem with that is that the whole desktop and remote software must load on the remote machine. That uses huge amounts of resources. At best you get a very slow machine. Tonido doesn’t work that way. It literally is a dedicated cloud system connecting you to your files. So they get listed immediately and load incredibly quickly, with minimum impact to the computer’s performance.

One great companion to the Tonido software is the Tonido Plug which is a little box, that can be connected to any USB or thumb drive and serve as an external server and NAS device that can be accessed from any remote computer using your account URL. The little box (which costs less than $100) is a power efficient green computing device which comes pre-installed with all of the Tonido applications. It is based on a 1.2 GHz processor which runs the Tonido software on top of Ubuntu Jaunty Linux OS.

Setup takes about 30 seconds and once set, you can leave the plug attached to the hard drive and still access all your files or upload files to the hard drive without the need for a computer to store them. That is in itself worth the plug for me.

All in all, Tonido seems to be ideal for those of us who love having access to our files but who also want to know they are not stored in some server somewhere; users who want to be able to share our files without concern for security and without having to upload them to various servers with size restrictions. And users who want to be able to listen to our music from anywhere or be able to update our financial information on the go.

In a world that is now being changed by cloud computing, Tonido seems to be one step ahead with a new wave: The personal cloud”¦

To get a jump start in personal cloud computing, we’re giving away 4 Tonido Plugs and 20 Webshare Pro accounts (view Pro features here) worth $700 in total. The Tonido Plugs will be sent to the winners anywhere in the world via FedEx.

I suppose the technology is of interest but the need or want is not compelling. Like knowledge, the value only comes from its use.

Wow, this would really help me with college! I'm disabled and can't carry 40 lbs of books with me every day. This way, I could use the digital textbooks and my netbook to access my study materials, no matter where I am! Please, make my studies easier!

I'd like to win the TonidoPlug, because I am a Sr. Systems Engineer for a large company, as well as the Deputy Supervisor for Systems Services. I have a say in what we do, and what we can look at purchasing. I also have a vast network at home, with more than 6 computers currently attached (and a thin client about to be connected).

I use Dropbox along with Tonido currently to create the ultimate sharing/syncing/backup/online computing environment, and I would LOVE to supplement it with TonidoPlug.

I also love to write reviews, and recommend products. In fact, my website ( has some reviews and tutorials, and my Twitter page ( has plenty of tweets about Tonido and how great it is. I am a big open-source junkie, and run Ubuntu on all of my home computers. I am THAT type of personality, so when I find a great product that few may know about, I really spread the word.

I would love to have easy access to all of my projects and related things remotely (Android development, Python/Django development, streaming media, etc.).

And biggest reason of all, I can almost guarantee that if I get a TonidoPlug, I will find some really cool (and typically productive) method of using it that nobody has thought of before. And then I'll write about it ;)

And if not TonidoPlug, I'd still be happy with Webshare Pro.

I've been using Tonido for several months and have recommended (and installed) Tonido on several of my friends and associates computers. Tonido makes my life so much easier. Having the ability to access all my files from any location is the best. I also use the "Thots" and photos features to keep in touch with family members. Tonido is everything I need in one application. Couldn't ask for anything more - except maybe winning a Tonido Webshare Pro license and Tonido Plug. I have been watching the progress of plug computing for a while and love the idea of the low energy device, with the extensibility to add multiple hard drives and devices. Also the ability to have a media sharing device on the local network that is not my desktop. All it needs is the ability to run security camera software.

I have files spread across multiple computers, and it seems as if the file I need is never on the computer I'm using! Such a pain to VNC in (through firewalls and on slow connections), dig through the files (hoping that this is the right computer) and then emailing it to myself...

Love to win...because in between using different computers and being in different places, it is next to impossible to keep everything up to date and I spend a huge amount of time and energy looking for and trying to use different solutions that just don't quite do it.

I would not just like, but love to win a Tonido Plug because I'm already using Tonido's services (more exactly since September 2009) and I always dreamed for the Tonido Plug: it's the cutest gadget ever!

If you would like a more complicated answer, here we go... I'm a website designer and I always have to switch between the desktop PC, between the NetBook and the MacBook, which is horrible when you're not home! Arrgh...

I love Ubuntu and I also love the idea that Tonido Plug comes with Ubuntu 9.04 Januty Jackalope on it... Linux fits perfectly with Tonido's vision of portability. I hope the awesome guys at Tonido will upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx when it will be released.

If you read this post you probably consider choosing me, right? Thank you very much anyway... I hope I will win someday a MakeUseOf giveaway, of course I prefer this one but... isn't everybody saying the same thing?

    MakeUseOf rocks!:)

Plus that Tonido Plug is the cutest gadget possible.:)

I'd love to win because our organisation manages and markets Game Lodges in Southern Africa's Transfrontier Parks. These are all community owned ventures that need to leverage the best of modern technology to generate tourist income. Situated in desolate wilderness areas we have satellite links with the Lodges that allows the staff and community to access the Web. Effective file sharing, data backup and communication will be enhanced with a product like Tonido. See our Facebook page as an example of the Bushman community-owned venture meeting the internet.

Awesome! I use logmein everyday so that I can access my computer from work to get and put files so that I don't have to use other means, but it isn't as seamless as I would like. I have also been wanting to set up a server at home to allow all of the numerous computers in our home to share files (data, music, video, etc.). This would not only allow that, but much, much more.
