The hardware is for sale at www.tonidoplug.com . For about $110 shipped you get a linux box the size of a big wall wart that has Ubuntu and all of the Tonido apps installed. For external storage there is a USB connection to add a thumb drive or external HD.

The thing runs on about 13 watts. I just got mine hooked up and running. If you like the Tonido programs, you'll like them more on an inexpensive dedicated server that's cheap to run.

This is really cool. I recently read about a hardware version of this concept for business- the idea was the owner or a trusted employee could keep a computer-sized server box at home and all the employees access that as a cloud-but-not-really. I finished reading and immediately wanted a consumer version. I've always loved the ease of cloud computing, but hate that feeling of not knowing where my data is stored. Call me old fashioned, but I like knowing the data is in magnet dust on a disk in a box in my room. -Alex

Awesome!! Really love the app. Now this has mad me curious... such a great APP, and its not very much known! Do you know of any other such apps, that do not require any third party presence? I know TVersity is also great but thats only for multimedia. Just other servers basically that are easy to use/operate that provide such awesome experence? Thanks . BTW, im not looking for a competitor of Tonido, just want to see what else is out there!

[...] The biggest downside of Tonido is it requires your home computer to be on whenever you’re away, but if you’re running an always on home server or if data privacy is a big issue, the inconvenience can be overlooked. If you’d like to avoid giving your data to third parties but would rather not leave your home computer on 24/7 for access, make sure to check out previously mentioned EyeOS, a cloud computing solution that you can install on your private web server.
We take security seriously in Tonido. It is as safe as any other networking application you run on your machine. (Your browser for example is one)

If it helps, Tonido has been audited for security by an independent security firm.

Tonido is designed to be as safe as an online banking site. There is a huge array of security related controls built into Tonido for security, IP filtering, phishing prevention etc.

If you are truly paranoid, you could disable HTTP remote access, and connect securely via Tonido to Tonido remote access, which of course requires that you have Tonido running on the remote machine.

You can read more about Tonido Security here
