Found a new site called http://www.fonts2u.com. These guys have over 20k free fonts nicely categorized
and what I really liked is the extended search they offer. You may search thru all character
maps. I was trying to find fonts with Japanese characters. I simply selected desired character
map, hit search and got fonts supporting them. Really cool and effective.

Great list! http://www.acefreefonts.com also provides over 20,000 free downloadable fonts, and they are searchable by name or by tags.

I’m sorry Mr. Austin, but you are terribly mislead. Font was word that existed before digital files did and it means “A complete set of type of one size and face.” So, yes, you do sound like and asshole.

Thanks for this, I especially liked the 500fonts as they were a lot easier to download, the first site you have to put in a code for *each* font and they have a crazy number of fonts so way too time consuming to dl all of them like I was attempting, but a good source if you are just looking for a few.
However, just wanted to point out that when I go to typenow and click on the font I like, it takes me to a page to purchase said font- can’t seem to find where they are free there….am I missing something?

I apologize if this sounds at all arrogant, but I still have hope that the general community of self-publishing whiz kids can one day changeâ€¦

A “font” is a digital file and not the actual design of the letters contained in the font; a set of glyphs (a term for any letter, number or symbol contained in a font) with a particular design is called a typeface. I think the best reason to use the more appropriate term “typeface” is that you will automatically earn points and respect from the designers who produce these lovely things and you will be a great deal cooler because of it.

A good metaphor (that I didn’t come up with) for the difference between the two terms is this:
The term “font” is to “typeface” what “mp3″ is to “song”; you don’t tell someone how much you love that mp3, you tell how much you love that song.

Right : “â€¦when I installed 9000 fonts on Microsoft Wordâ€¦” (you installed the digital files)
Wrong : “â€¦upload a scanned image of a piece of writing or a font â€¦” (you are scanning a printed type sampleâ€“so the design, which is a typeface, not the digital file)

Sorry if I sound like an asshole; this matter is quite dear to my heart.

Thank you for this post it will really help me alot. Some other good font websites are dafont.com, you can navigate through this website easily to find the right font and also theres a feature that lets you type in text into a box and all the fonts text is the same as the text which you have written. Also deviantart.com (http://www.deviantart.com/#catpath=resources/fonts&order=9) has good fonts, most members have made thier own fonts so they are quite unique. Last but definately not least famousfonts.smackbomb.com has a wide variety of famous fonts, it is similar to typenow.net however famousfonts have a variety of more fonts like famous music fonts, famous food & drink fonts, famous game fonts etc.
