The Incredible Free Manual For Every Mac User [PDF]

Oct. 2nd, 2009 By Simon Slangen

Perhaps it’s due to the general popularity of the iPod and iPhone, or a result of their hilarious advertisement campaigns, there’s no denying it – Macs are gaining popularity.

Gone are the days when Macs were only considered valid ‘office’ computers. These days, Macs are the slick icons of the design and music industries — and now they’re also spreading to the general consumer market.

But even though Macs are an overall reincarnation of simplicity and user-friendliness, most people – whether they are computer initiates or have been working with Windows their entire life – need a little help getting started.

Jackson Chung, devoted Mac writer and Assistant Editor on MakeUseOf, decided to do something about it. He immediately retreated to his Apple-cave and has been working tediously on MakeUseOf’s Incredible Mac Manual ever since.

This slick, sixty-odd paged monster is based on Snow Leopard – the latest release of the Mac OS X operating system – and tells you everything you need to know about Mac. Jackson supplies you with numerous tips, tricks and free applications. Get the hang of the interface and discover what your Mac is really capable of.

This release is presented to you by MakeUseOf, with no cost and no strings attached. Download the The Mac Manual now in PDF to enjoy it from your desktop, or read it online via Scribd.com.

There’s an innacuracy… Under “Pro Tips”, one can also set the display to sleep instantly using Leopard (not sure about Tiger). I remember watching an Apple Tip podcast on how to do it using an active screen corner, or you can just press CTRL+SHIFT+EJECT.

Yup, that tip works on Leopard. But on Snow Leopard, it just got much easier :)

Thanks! I’ve just recently started to use a Macbook and I’ve gotten the hang of it easily, but this PDF will surely give me some good tips.

All I get is an error message in the Downloads window that says: “no file exists”.

Not a good sign.

Jackson,

Kudos on the manual. Nice achievement. Kudos!

However, i am very very very surprised that you have left out Quicksilver. Using OSX (SL for the first couple of days) without it made me realize how much it has become a part of my Macbook.

Also, could you make a post next time about Image Viewers? It took me a lot of time and googling to finally find ‘JustLooking’ – an alternative to Windows Fax and Image viewer.

Thanks for the manual though

I can’t get it to download either (Firefox or Safari).

Still works on my end. Very strange.

Upper or lower link?

What’s the error?

Not using a download manager?

2009-10-03 14:45:03

Works for me now (both links).

I had tried it 3 previous times since I saw the post yesterday.

No DL-manager.

And now I can’t replicate it to tell you the error, it looks like it
was coming from the server, not a broken page. If I had to recall,
I’d say it was a 5xx error (but no promises).

Hi!
Very nice job on the manual.
I was wondering if you’d let me work on the spanish translation of the complete manual in order to offer it for free to the readers of my blog, and providing you with the proper credits of course.
Please let me know if this could be possible by email.
Thanks!
