An app that every iOS owner should have in their screen tray is the Google search app. It’s so incredibly useful in day-to-day life for quick queries, directions, restaurant reviews, movie listings, and solving disputes with the wife. Now it has been updated to provide reminders and real-time updates – a bit like Siri.
For starters, Google Search now synchronises with your calendars and will send you a notification if you need to leave early for an appointment, in case of say a traffic jam. It also provides a handy Google map to help you get to your destination, along with your estimated travelling time.
Now for the part that is starting to encroach on Siri’s territory a bit. Say you have to put on the oven when you get home, and you can’t forget, otherwise your wife will flip her lid, and there’ll be no dinner on the table that night. Well, all you have to do is say to Google “OK Google, remind me to put the oven on when I get home”, and when you get home, the reminder will pop up on your screen. Obviously GPS and sound have to be enabled for this to happen, as well as permission for push notifications.
The key phrase here is “remind me“. As long as you attach that part to the beginning, Google kicks in and listens. You can also tell it to “remind me” when a band has a new album out or when a new movie is released. Or you can ask Google questions, and get instant replies back. Pub quiz night will never be the same again.
Finally, the updated app will automatically bring up your tickets when you arrive at a venue such as an airport or a theatre. No more frantically looking through emails looking for the PDF ticket file. Again, GPS is required to know where you are.
Let us know in the comments what you think of the new features. Is this the start of invading into Siri’s territory?
