The Big Book of BitTorrent: The Torrent Guide for Everyone

Apr. 26th, 2009 By Aibek

torrent-guideThere are tons of ways to download files, be it pictures of last Christmas party, or that new cinema flick. Amongst them are the conventional direct download, FTP, and of course Peer-to-Peer.

BitTorrent, an example of P2P, is a great, perhaps even the best way to download files, both in concept as in use – that is, once you’ve got the hang of it.

Because all of it seems pretty abstract to innitiates, many people experience difficulties at the start. Even those that would call themselves ‘advanced users’ often don’t know even half of what’s possible.

MakeUseOf proudly presents to you The Big Book of BitTorrent. All you think you should know, and more.

how to use torrents guide

In 28 illustrated pages, Saikat Basu from The Things I Do takes newcomers by the hand and guides them in their first steps. Initiates, but also the more experienced users get their fair share of information.

Read how to start, and advance is the world of BitTorrent. Download The Big Book of BitTorrent here for free, in PDF.

Please pass this manual around and help us spread the word.

Thanks for a great book. I’m sure to link this post when I try and explain Bittorrent to the average person. One thing to note, http://www.demonoid.com is taking registrations right now, I just registered. Yeah!

The download link seems not to work…

2009-04-27 02:28:07

the link points to a PDF file, which means you may need to wait for it to be downloaded to your PC before browser can fully open it.

Apparantly my comment has disappeared. Anyway, I said the book doesn’t mention Peerguardian which you really need for p2p protection. The book seems okay, it doesn’t have much for advanced users though.

peerguardian is totally useless

Well, it was meant to be a primer so that newbies can start off with torrents.

Very informative, a little primer for folks just starting out with torrents.

I’m looking forward to how to re-connect torrents that are always stuck at 99.8%

:-) Thanks!

Your half open portion is NONSENSE plain and simple — why do people continue to spread this FUD!! You have no need to try and connect to 80 freaking peers per seconds..

Suggesting people hack their tcp/ip stack is ASININE!!

2009-04-27 11:25:58

I like torrents as a distribution platform, but I’m not sure that I’d ever call it the “best way” to download. The best way is the fastest and most reliable. Torrents, unfortunately, aren’t very predictable in either respect, but are certainly less impressive than direct downloads.

It’s definitely a technology that benefits the source of the files (providing other sources in the future) than the consumers.

I also mostly agree with bud. Nobody needs to mess with their network stacks unless they’re doing very specific kinds of work. Peer-to-peer is sufficiently normal that hacking the stack is more likely to slow things down than anything else.

Dave,

They haven’t given me any invitation codes yet. It may depend on how much I seed and I haven’t done much yet. There are some books I want so I will try that and see if I can get you an invite. I lucked out with open registration, never saw that one before!

In BitTorrent pdf it says leecher becomesa seeder after receiving complete file. Seeding is possible as soon as you have some data however small.
I guess it’s a difficult one to explain thanks to the dumb seeder/leecher terminology.
