The 10 Most Followed People On Instagram: Should You Follow Them Too?

This is not our top 10 of Instagram. It’s actually the top 10 accounts based entirely on the amount of followers each one of them has. Data was collected on September 21, 2013, via Webstagram’s Hot List, and while this is subject to change at any time, the current list is a nice portrayal of who is really using Instagram.

We have the evidence — these are definitely the top 10 Instagram accounts in the world. Do they merit the hype? Should you follow them too?

10. Kylie Jenner

Followers: 5,907,168 / Following: 185

Kylie Jenner is the younger sister of Kendall Jenner and half-sister of the Kardashians, all of who are of Keeping Up With The Kardashian’s fame.

Kylie, like her sisters, is typically associated with fashion and modeling, and her Instagram account reflects it. You’ll see quite a few of her top clothing picks as well as a few revealing images to go along with them…

Be careful, though. This girl is only 16, but her account makes it obvious that she is trying to pass for much, much older.

9. Khloe Kardashian

Surprisingly, another Kardashian show-member takes a top 10 spot on the list. Khloe is considered to be a socialite, television personality, businesswoman, fashion designer, author, actress, and presenter, and she is also the wife of NBA’s Lamar Odom, who played for the Los Angeles Lakers at the time of their wedding.

Khloe’s image posts are a little less design and fashion focused than her family counterparts. You’ll find that her account is much more, well, real. The album is essentially a small slice of her big life.

8. Beyoncé

Original member of Destiny’s Child, wife of popular rap artist Jay-Z, and number 15 on Billboard’s Top 50 R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of the Past 25 Years, this performer has sold 13 million albums in the US and over 75 million records around the globe.

Beyoncé’s current Instagram posts include standard artist promotional material, photos of her fashion choices, and images throughout her (and her husband’s) music career. As of September 2013, it seems like she has started opening up the world of Instagram to her baby, Ivy Blue. One could say that Beyoncé’s Instagram account is a bit “classier” than most, but by no means is it too interesting.

Fans of the artist would find quite a bit of worthy material on her account, but other than that, there’s not much else.

7. Taylor Swift

Do you follow any teen female cousins, daughters, sisters, etc. on Instagram? Well, imagine giving them a record deal, every celebrity boyfriend they could ever want, and about $220 million dollars. Then imagine what their Instagram posts would be like. Essentially, you have Ms. Swift’s Instagram account in a nutshell, but with an added flavor of maturity.

Her posts certainly aren’t obnoxious. In fact, one could go as far as to say that they are cute. Paired with cat pictures and the occasional photo of herself with her fellow musically-talented friends, Swift’s Instagram might — dare I say — be pleasant to follow. Her posts are real rather than of the fabricated, PR variety.

Besides the occasional artist promotion fare, Taylor Swift’s Instagram does give an inside look at the life of an artist.

6. Kendall Jenner

Sister of Kylie Jenner and half-sister of the Kardashians, Kendall Jenner somehow found her way into the Top 10 list. The television personality and model is very fashion-oriented, going as far as to start her runway modeling career in 2011 and working as a brand ambassador for Seventeen Magazine.

What will you find on Kendall’s account? Lots and lots of fashion. Furthermore, most of the time, she’ll be modeling it. With that said, if you’re a fashion fanatic, then her account may very well be worth following.

5. Ariana Grande

Followers: 7,150,544 / Following: 99

Nickelodeon sensation Ariana Grande takes the number 5 spot of the Top 10 Instagram accounts, which may leave you with one question: why?

Her successful song “The Way” made it to the top 10 of Billboard’s Top 100 in March 2013, and she has experienced quite a bit of fame through the stage. Furthermore, her character from Nick’s show Victorious will be moving to a spin-off entitled Sam & Cat.

We wouldn’t consider Grande to be an “A-list” celebrity, but the amount of her followers say otherwise. With that said, perhaps this is a sign of things to come for Ariana Grande. Regardless, her Instagram account is more focused on self promotion. She’s young and relatively green when it comes to industry (despite having much success with younger audiences), so chances are this is a great way to get to know her.

Hopefully, we’ll see her on the big screen and Billboard more often in a variety of ways.

4. Rihanna

Recording artist, actress, and fashion designer Rihanna is an expected hit for the Top 5 Instagram accounts. With seven albums released since her start in 2005 and four movies under her belt, one might say that the Barbados-born performer is doing quite well for herself.

So what will you find on Rihanna’s Instagram account? Answer: pictures of Rihanna.

We wouldn’t say that the account is self-absorbed, but 95% of the images found here will have herself in them in one way or another. Sure, there are some cool pictures of Thailand’s scenery on her account, but right in the middle of every single one is Rihanna flaunting her bikini.

Why would you follow this account? To look at Rihanna. That’s pretty much the only reason.

3. Kim Kardashian

Followers: 9,935,306 / Following: 85

Let it be said now: the Kardashians own Instagram.

From Kylie to Kim, this family takes up nearly half of the top ten Instagram users. How crazy is that? Kim — socialite, television star, home video enthusiast, and wife of Kanye West — is an avid Instagram user, so there’s no doubt that she would be on this list.

Her account is purely for self-promotion, though. Like Rihanna, most images are of herself, however, the images are less in volume. Perhaps the reasoning is that she is now mother to her’s and Kayne’s child, North West, and this likely takes some time out of her day (besides all of the cameras that are around).

Yeah, we don’t get it either.

Moving on.

1. Instagram

Followers: 38,022,266 / Following: 286

We’ve written a bit about Instagram’s own Instagram before on MakeUseOf, and our opinion still stands: it’s pretty cool.

Essentially, this account pulls from all the photos that the app’s users post and publishes the best ones that they can find. This means you can find a ton of awesome content from a variety of Instagram users around the world. From art to technology, this may be the most useful Instagram account out there.

Your Turn

Let’s be real for a second: the top ten accounts of Instagram aren’t that useful (except for Instagram’s account itself).

With that said, this possibly says quite a bit about our world! I mean, when half of Instagram’s top ten users are in Keeping Up With The Kardashians, things might be a little off.

What do you think? Could Instagram have a more useful top 10 list? How many of these do you follow? Who are your top Instagram follows? Let’s hear what you have to say.
