Thanks for the additional options. I'm sure there are a few options out there. If you have a virtual environment, it may even be worth it to find malware infected PCs.

Strangely even the normally supine Windows Defender awoke. Various components in my system, from HIPS, through AV to anti malware made my life difficult for a while. Very amusing. However, it's the ones that you have not yet seen that are the problem, not recognised threats.

An offering from Microsoft seems to do a good job although I am reluctant to ad their stuff. Also trend microvirus housecall has been good http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/

Gee, my anti-malware protection (Avast) is so good, it's preventing me from downloading SpyCar's TowTruck application. This is their tool which checks to see how well my anti-malware protection is working and to cleanup anything SpyCar might have left behind. Good thing Avast stop all their malware tests!

Eicar virus tests are not dangerous viruses. They are a series of DOS programs that print Eicar Test when ran. DOS programs are blocked by most antivirus. The thing you are downloading is technically not dangerous, it mimics something dangerous like the Spycar tests.

Let's see if I understand this: Eicar will test my anti-virus software by having me purposely try to download and install a virus??

Maybe I'll test my seat belts and anti-lock brakes by driving at 80 mph towards an intersection and slamming on the brakes. Or I'll test my fire alarm by setting fire to the couch.

I think I'll skip their test.
