Remember when Facebook Timeline wasn’t around? Although it feels like forever, it’s been only a year since Timeline became officially available to all users, and while some were already using it before that date, Timeline is still a new feature in the greater scheme of things. Despite an initial public outcry when it first came out, Facebook Timeline profiles have managed to find their place in our hearts, and after they became mandatory, even the last of the opposers has given up.
So you have your Timeline profile, how can you make if even more personal and exciting? The launch of Timeline Apps paved the way to a more customized profile – one which showcases your activities from all over the Web, not only Facebook. Facebook Timeline covers are also a great way to personalize and promote your profile or brand.
Carefully Chosen Apps
So what are Timeline apps anyway? Apps are basically your way to share information from other websites with your Facebook friends. This can include the music you listen to, the movies you want to see, the food you want to taste, the exercise you do, the books you read, etc., etc. The list of things you can share on your Facebook Timeline is almost endless, all you have to do is choose and start sharing.
Before you start with Timeline apps, you should go over some very important privacy tips laid out by Angela. In a nutshell, you should pay close attention to what information these apps share, and who they share it with. This will help you avoid future embarrassments.
So what are some good Timeline apps to try? That very much depends on what you like to do (aside from reading your Facebook news feed, that is).
For music lovers: which is your streaming service of choice? You can find Timeline apps for all major providers such as Spotify, 8tracks, Shazam and Jango. Once you add a music app, it will automatically share songs you listen to, radio stations you like, tracks you comment on, etc. Your friends can click on your activities, and if they’re using the app, listen to your favorite songs immediately. You can browse all music apps on the App Center’s music page, or simply log in to your favorite service using Facebook and start sharing.
For travel lovers: do you want to share your travel plans with your Facebook friends? Apps like Airbnb, TripAdvisor, Kayak and even Foursquare are all you need. When you connect these apps to your Timeline, they will share bookings you make, places you want to visit, maps you create, places you check in to, etc.
To find more travel apps, visit the travel section of the App Center.
For food lovers: ah, food. Who doesn’t like food? Do you want to share your cravings with your Facebook friends? It’s easy with apps like Yelp and Foodspotting. With these apps, you can automatically share foods you want to try, places you want to go to, etc.
More useful apps: other apps you should be aware of are big ones like Pinterest, which brings your pins and boards to Facebook; Goodreads, for the book addicts; Endomondo, for the sport lovers; and Viddy, if you want to shoot videos and share them on your Facebook Timeline.
This is of course just the tip of the iceberg. You can browse the App Center for hundreds of other apps, or simply check whether your favorite website includes Facebook integration. Don’t forget to keep privacy in mind, as always.

In fact, even if you’re just curious about what your Facebook presence can look like in a movie, you might as well try it. Timeline Movie Maker is a joint project from Facebook and marketing agency Definition 6, and the results sure show it. Your Timeline movie includes all your big moments (which you shared on Facebook), complete with a customizable soundtrack and the ability to choose which of your photos are featured. You can even create a movie for your Facebook Page.
The only caveat is that you can’t download the very cool result, and can only share it on Facebook. But then again, what did you expect from a Facebook product?

Or…Just Get Rid Of It
Well, it’s not exactly a way to superpower your Facebook Timeline, but it sure is a way to upgrade your Facebook experience if you still fiercely hate Timeline. One important thing to note before continuing: there’s no way to completely disable Timeline. Some add-ons let you see Facebook profiles in the old layout, but your friends will still see your profile in the Timeline layout, and there’s nothing much you can do about it. But if you hate Timeline enough and don’t want to lay your eyes on it, this trick will work for you.
To disable your Facebook Timeline profile, head over to facebooktimelineremove.net and download the right extension for your browser. The extension is available for Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox and Chrome. Once you install it and refresh Facebook, all Timeline profiles will disappear and the old layout will take their place. To go back, all you have to do is disable the add-on and refresh again.
