Well in the case of THIS product, I originally was under the impression that it was preventing certain files from downloading based on a blacklist. Upon researching the product website, it seems that it's more of a patching utility because it is passive.

It really didn't go into a lot of detail about the methods used. Here is their blurb:
-Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware and other potentially unwanted programs.
-Block spying / tracking via cookies.
-Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted or dangerous web sites.

The FAQ has even less info. Personally, I guess "I" didn't feel the need to know the exact workings because I have been using it a long time and noticed better performance after installing it on many machines.

Thanks for the write-up.

It seems one key differentiator and proposition i: "Instead, it plugs known security holes that are frequently taken advantage of by malicious software."

Can you Expand on this? Is it turning off ports? Examples or which ones? Services? Examples or which ones?

A suggestion to authors promoting new apps and developrs of new apps: Getting mentioned is a good first step, but to exploit an end-user's urgency, some sort of Comparison with existing products is very useful. The first Question I think of is: What can this new app do that my current app does not? Is the coverage better? Is the technique more fool-proof? Etc.

In short, I urge your writers to not just stop at notifying us of new finds, but also scratching under the surface. A little more research. A clear and concise FAQ.

THAT would be of greater service to all.

They also have a product called SpywareGuard, which is a realtime spyware monitor. These two in conjunction with a decent antivirus will go a long way toward spyware protection.
