If you want to use the Linux command line to check something quickly but don't want to go through time consuming installations, SimpleShell is a great alternative. It is a web app that gives you a terminal emulator and a Linux shell account that can be accessed with just a simple browser.

You can use SimpleShell for a number of programming frameworks including gcc, g++, perl, python and darcs. A number of network utilities are also available including ping, ssh, lynx, curl, ftp and whois. The only limitation is that each session can only last for 15 minutes and if you need it for longer you'll have to start a new session.  The list of text editors that are supported include nano, vim, emacs and joe.
