The holiday season is upon us, and many of us will be visiting hometowns and running into old friends. Most of us will also be purchasing gifts for loved ones and maybe receiving a few presents too.
With the holidays imminent, it’s also time to consider how we can make our Facebook profiles more fun to view, and how to make Facebook more useful to us.
Update Your “About Me” Section
Your favourite movie section may have not seen an update in years. Did you like watching The Dark Night and Gravity or not? These are good conversation starters with old friends, so not to be ignored completely. Same goes for books, music and the like. Make sure your current tastes are represented adequately by editing your “About Me” section.
Oh, and did you check out the work and education sections while you were there? How out of date were they? It could be a tad embarrassing if left unattended. Check also what your basic details look like when viewing your Timeline as a whole. On the left, you see a snippet of your “About Me” section, showing the latest work and education details, etc. Are they the right things to show? If not, you’ll need to add the best details again, as this section always shows the newest additions.
Use Apps That Connect To Your About Me Section
There are a few apps you can use to automagically update your About Me sections. Try Goodreads, Spotify and Flixter to start with.
Give Your Timeline A Makeover
You want your timeline to look good when your old crush goes Facebook-stalking, don’t you? So, clean it up now. Get a new profile picture, a new cover image, hide embarrassing stuff and fix things up a little.
You could also set up a bit of IFTTT automation to bring in photos from Instagram or Flickr, or posts from Google+ or your blog.
Add Life Events
Life events are under-used on Facebook, but they can be a bit of fun and really useful to old friends catching up on your life. Did you get married? Graduate? Travel the world? Get your dream job? Lose someone close to you? Have kids? Well, note it all in. Then your friends will get a nice overview when they check out your timeline.
Highlight Posts On Your Timeline
Not every day is a stand-out event. This is why, when people gloss over your past few years in its digital glory, you need to make the best bits stand out.
To highlight a post, click on the right-hand drop-down menu and choose ‘Highlight’. You can also adjust the positioning of photos from this menu. Make a feature of some of your best photos and wittiest status updates. Don’t forget to highlight your favourite life events too!
Consider Making One Or Two Posts Public
What does your profile look like to a complete stranger? Is it completely locked down? If an old friend were to find your timeline, would they recognise it was yours? It’s a good idea to have a little bit of information and a photo or two visible to strangers, especially for those of us who changed our names through marriage. Otherwise, how is your childhood best friend ever going to know it is you?
Search For Recommendations
Do you need ideas for presents for family? Or do you want new entertainment for yourself during the cold months? Well, Facebook’s Graph Search could be a great way to find ideas. Word your searches like this: TV shows liked by people who like Dr Who and Breaking Bad. Then you’ve got a huge selection of ideas!
Link Your Facebook Account With Amazon
If you want to see what your friends think of the items on your Amazon wishlist, connect your Facebook & Amazon accounts. Your friends’ Amazon reviews will then show up on your wishlist. It’s a good way to help you prune and polish your wishlist before you show it to your family.
When you catch up with old friends and find yourself browsing their Facebook profiles, what do you look at? What would you find embarrassing?
