I use Gmail Multiple inboxes too:
1) Special inbox with "in:inbox is:unread -label:(mytrashmails)" for new important mails;
2) "is:starred" for reminders;
3) label:(mytrashmails) is:unread -in:trash for unimportant mails, newsletters,...

The advantage is the read items automatically disappear

Gmail additional inboxes do the job: one inbox for "is:unread is:starred", another for "is:unread -is:starred", another for "is:starred -is:unread". This keep me tracking important things and is enough.
