Animated GIFs have existed for almost as long as the Internet itself. For a while there, it seemed like we were done with them, but sites like Reddit brought them back in a big way, and now, they are one of the most popular types of image on the Internet. It makes sense, they are a great way to convey something with motion quickly.
If you love GIFs, you’ll want to take a look at iOS app Riffsy (free). It lets you view GIFs at light speed, send them to friends using iMessage, Facebook and by email. and it even lets you make your own GIFs using any video on YouTube. It’s just an awesome application, and best of all, it’s free!
Installation and Set Up
As with any iOS application, you will need to head over to the App Store and download it. From there, you can then create an account within the app. Enter your email address and create one manually, or if you want to speed the process up a little more, you can simply click the Facebook button and connect your account that way.
After that, the app will ask you to choose some collections to follow. You can skip this step if you like, but since the whole purpose of getting this app is finding GIFs, you will probably want to pick a couple.
The homepage of the application will show you the GIFs from collections that you are following. It’s like a Twitter timeline but filled with nothing but animated photos. It’s a good place to come and get a couple of quick laughs.
The main page is not the only way to browse through GIFs. You can click the menu button on the top left of the screen to get access to different categories. You can also use this section to view trending, featured, and GIFs shared from everyone on the service. The categories available are animals, reactions, TV shows, and movies. They are a little more broad than I would like, but it helps you expand your horizons.
Any GIF you find in the app can be shared in a number of ways. Simply click the share button on the right side under the GIF, and a menu will pop out letting you choose where to share it.
You can share via iMessage, copy to clipboard, send it to email, Facebook, and Twitter. When you share with iMessage, the app copies the GIF to your clipboard, and it automatically opens the Message app for you to copy and paste it to any of your friends. It’s incredibly easy, and it’s a fun way to expand the way you message people.
Seeing GIFs from others is only half of the fun you can have with the application. You can easily create your own from any video on YouTube right within the Riffsy. All you need to do is search for a video, click on it, drag the bar to set the length of the GIF, and move the video to the location you want to make into a GIF.
Once you have it all set and ready to go, you can add a caption if you prefer, and you can even leave the sound if you think it makes the GIF better. Of course, the sound will only work within the app itself or on Riffsy’s website as .GIF is an image format but it’s still a cool feature to have.
The last step to making your own GIF is putting it in a category and adding some tags so other users can find it within in the app. Once it’s generated, you can share it just as you would with any other image that you found in the application. It doesn’t get much easier than that.
For anyone who loves GIFs (which seems to be everyone on the Internet now), this is the application you will want on your iOS device. Whether you just want to kill some time looking at funny GIFs, or you are looking to create your very own animated images, Riffsy has you covered.
