Monitor User Activity On your PC with Elite Keylogger [MakeUseOf Giveaway]

Have you ever wanted to ensure your children aren’t giving out personal information online? Even if you’ve had a lengthy discussion with them about staying safe online, a child may not realize just how much information they’re giving out. Or are you an employer who wants to monitor the work habits of your employees? These are possibly two of the most common uses for a keystroke recorder.

This week, we’re giving away 10 copies of Widestep Security’s Elite Keylogger 4.6 PRO worth $990 (Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 32-bit compatible). Let’s take a look at what this fantastic app can do for you.

Before we begin, MakeUseOf would like to state that we do not condone the use of key-loggers for malicious purposes. This giveaway is to support its use in the business environment i.e. monitoring employees or supervising your child’s internet activity and the like.

Elite Keylogger 4.6 PRO comes with all the features you could need for monitoring a user’s actions on your computer and it does it with a simple interface. You can set it to record every keystroke typed, what programs were used, which web sites are visited and even take screenshots at a set interval.

Elite Keylogger Full-Screen

Elite Keylogger hides from the user’s view completely. It doesn’t show in the taskbar, control panel, or processes. In my tests, it even bypassed virus scanners. If I didn’t install it myself, I wouldn’t know it was on my system. After installation, you are given instructions on how to unhide the program for configuration.

Elite Keylogger Instructions

After following these instructions, the program loads for you to set the options.

On the right menu you can select the date for the logs you want to see. After that, you select which type of log (keystrokes, screenshots, etc.) to view. The keylogger can email the logs to you privately. The program logs all keystrokes, including passwords, so be aware of this when sending any information over email.

You’re able to select specific items to track and set it for specific users. Even when recording keystrokes and taking screen-shots every 20 seconds, I didn’t notice any drop in speed or extra RAM usage on my 3 year old laptop, so the software does a nice job of running efficiently.

As shown above, the software also keeps track of what applications are used and even the specific times they are launched and closed.

Screenshot tracking alone can tell you a lot about a person’s computer use. If you take frequent screenshots, I recommend lowering the snapshot quality to 8-bit to preserve disk space. All screenshots are shown in an easy-to-view thumbnail gallery and can be enlarged with a click.

If you’re looking for an undetectable, low resource, and easy to use keystroke tracker, I highly recommend Elite Keylogger 4.6 PRO. Download the fully-functional 7-day trial and check it out for yourself.

If you don’t mind your users knowing that they’re being watched, try out their free Quick Keylogger.

Free Keylogger Full-Screen

The free version is visible in the taskbar and easily detected by virus/trojan scanners. You can password-protect the logs, but users can shut down the program if they see it. The free keylogger has fewer options compared to its big brother, but if you’re just looking to record keystrokes then this can do the job.

Spying on your kids? Crappy parenting. It’s also lazy parenting. I do not want to win. I have teenagers – I have *taught* them what is acceptable and what is not. They earn the privilege of having their own computers, cell phones, etc. They do this through responsible behavior. It’s hard work for me and for them, but far more rewarding than a breach of trust or the “easy” way out. Yes, they know I *could* track their every movement. But until they give me a reason to? I choose to trust my children.

Thanks for your comment. It’s not always about trust, exactly. We’ve all heard of stories where an innocent (and trustworthy) 8-year-old is tricked online by some creep into giving out personal information. I think the Internet can be a useful place for children, but it is good to monitor it, just to be safe. Sometimes kids (and adults) don’t realize when they’re saying more than they should.

I’m not used to keylogging and monitoring and have looked all over for easy open source, but to no avail. Anyway, I’ve met the 12 year old on a few occasions and he is up to no good. Says he wants to blow stuff up all the time and lists the chemicals he needs. I think she needs this lol. ;)

So I just want to make sure that he isn’t giving out more info than required and isn’t falling into any traps. Also… he has a credit card.. and is trying to give money on different sites but I prevented him. I just wanna make sure that the sites are safe and he DOES NOT hand out any money to any site !

Well, a keylogger is pretty cool and maybe I’m being a bit paranoid but…why are you giving away undetectable keyloggers?? I would think that the anti-keylog from the same company might be more useful.

    Just my point of view.

Also, do keyloggers only detect keys typed in fields where you can type? So, if you’re typing a password, does typing random letters inbetween typing your password characters protect you?

    • Jonathan Bennett March 24, 2010

That’s an excellent question. I can’t speak for all keyloggers, but I know this software tracks every key you press from my use of it. So if you’re typing in a password field and then try something wacky like typing random letters in another application, or in no application, it continues to record your keystrokes AND it tells you what window (or application) they were being typed in. So a person reading the log should be able to see what you were attempting to do and still decipher your password.

Thanks for answering. So if it tracks the window I’m in, I could just move the cursor focus to a space out of the password box but in the same window. Then, randomly type characters before moving the cursor focus back to the password box to type in your next password character.

Yeah, that’s a clever way to get around keyloggers. I’m not 100% sure it would work but it sounds like it would. If you want, you could test it out on your own by downloading their free trial. It was interesting for me to learn first-hand about how keyloggers work.

I’d like to win ’cause I’m too cheap to pay $90,- for a great program. No, seriously – I’ve been considering buying some sort of keylogger, since I have young children, I work at a school, I’m curious toward anything that has to do with computer security, and all sorts of other reasons. Not, by the way, for malicious purposes – although it’s really nice to find out how the bad guys work. There are, however so many different loggers (both hard- and software) out there, that it’s tough to pick the right one. At least with Elite Keylogger, I know it’s been tested by the guys who really know what they’re doing, and not some geek who’s being paid by the sponsor to write some biased report. The guys who really know… yadeeyadeeya… are of course the people at MakeUseOf. (Okay, I admit – hopefully flattering will up my chances, and while it’s true, it still seems desparate)
Hey, if nothing else, at least thanks for the review, it brought me closer to deciding which keylogger I should buy!

MUO is the greatest web site EVER for maintaining your sanity if you (like me) are responsible for making sure everyone else’s computer work correctly.

And having Elite Keylogger is the epitome of help that MUO brings to the downtrodden like me. Believe me, life would be so much easier if only you could get the TRUTH in response to the age-old question: “Okay, now tell me what you were doing BEFORE this “suddenly happened”?

Elite Keylogger would be like CSI, NCIS and Law & Order all wrapped up in one (throw in Jake and the Fat Man if you can remember back that far).

    So PLEASE GIMMME GIMMME GIMME

I would like to win this product because it would help me fix my computer. When I’m trying to figure out what application was running or what I was doing before my computer messes up, this application would keep track of it for me so I can figure out what went wrong and what needs fixed.

I have a lot of things running when I’m working on my computer and when things go wrong, I don’t remember what I was doing just before the problem happened. (they say memory is the first to go…so this would really help me!)

Thanks for the opportunity to apply.

    MakeUseOf.com is great.
    Why? Why Not!?
I NEED this keylogger to monitor the activity on my workstation. My business resides here on this computer, housing the means to which I make my living.
It is also the only source of internet for my guests! Rude company has, in the past, completely f*%#ed EVERYTHING up.
PLEASE GUYS, I COULD REALLY USE IT

Because my niece who is 13 almost got abducted by a 41 yr old man. Thankfully it was found out several hours before the meeting time. I am now very scared and I think this may help me to sleep better at night. Thank you. By the way – the man is being prosucuted.

Just for the information, I had a problem with the file that Jackson sent me…McAfee freaked out and said that it was an unsafe file. I downloaded it to my desktop anyway, but neglected to open it until I could do a little more research.

In the meantime, McAfee did a regular scan and quarantined the keylogger, claiming it was a Trojan, specifically the Artemis!DA0E204CA3D7 Trojan. I am unsure how to address this, but thought at least followup information should be available….

It would help me on my research of phonetic usage, alphabet usage among different races. It would be really useful in the fully-disclosed study that I send out to people who volunteer for it.
    Thank you.
