Index.dat Suite I have found to be poor. Couldn't get it to delte index.dat files. Viwer was slow. I prefer Index.dat Analyzer from Systenance. Quicker, only over-writes index.dat files but better than nothing.

[...] Why edit the index.dat? When you browse the web, your computer leaves more traces behind than just the cookies and history file. Erasing your browser history and cookies from within Internet Explorer still leaves behind the index.dat file hidden away. On top of retaining an extensive list of the sites you have visited, it can also expose plain text passwords. Index.dat Suite is a free application that lets you examine the contents of index.dat files in a human friendly format and selectively export and erase the entries you find. For additional help sweeping your virtual trail clean, check out MRU Blaster. Index.dat Suites [via MakeUseOf] [...]

I checked out Xtravo's site at Jawoco.com. Based on the poor quality of their website design, I wouldn't download it.

Also, I wonder if basing a browser on the same code as another browser is going to solve any problems. IE has a lot of problems and isn't terribly standards compliant. Why would I want something based on that? Just my two cents worth.

I haven't tried that add-on. I'll have to look into that.
As for the registry, browsing history isn't really stored there. The MRU keys in the registry is more for applications such as Office, Photoshop, etc. So it tells about your computer use.

How about the "Stealthier" Add-on for Firefox? That prevents all information from being cookied and cached (if you turn it on). Does this apply to index.dat and the registry as well?

Unfortunately, changing operating systems and browsers isn't always as easy as it sounds. For instance, where I work, there is only one piece of software to accomplish the field work and it only runs on Windows. Also, our web-based applications were developed to run on IE and aren't very compatible with Firefox due to CSS rendering problems.
