Supercharge Your Inbox with Postbox [MakeUseOf Giveaway]

I love email. It’s fast, simple, and everybody has it. That being said, I’ve never been able to find a desktop application to really suit my needs. Web-based clients like Gmail are great but can be lacking for power users (not to mention offline support is still a little finicky) and Thunderbird can go for years without a significant update.

Enter Postbox, a sleek and ultra-fast desktop email client for Windows and Mac. This week, we will be giving away 5 FREE copies of Postbox. But it doesn’t end there — we’ll also show you how to get 25% off the retail price, earn all of your money back and then some more!

Thunderbird users will notice some striking similarities ““ that’s because Postbox is built on Thunderbird’s original code. This is a great thing, because Postbox has taken all the good things from Thunderbird, added new features, and put it in a great looking package.

Easy Setup

Postbox takes the frustration out of configuring your email accounts. When I added my email account, I didn’t need to do anything extra — Postbox figured out the server settings and ports all on its own.

Interface

The main interface displays a list of your accounts, folders, and messages. Taking a cue from web browsers, Postbox includes a fantastic tabbing system so you can easily jump between messages and searches.

Instead of Thunderbird’s Tags, Postbox uses “Topics” to help you categorize your messages. These work just the same as Tags and I like using them to prioritize my messages. Tags can be automatically assigned to messages based on content or the sender.

Messages

My favorite feature of Postbox is the extra details provided when viewing individual messages. Under the sender’s name, you have access to quick links to find other messages, attachments, images, or links from that sender. Postbox displays a list of attachments and links from the message you are reading which is perfect for digging through messages to find something specific.

Search

Search is probably one of the most important features when dealing with a large inbox. Postbox sports a very fast internal search engine, but after indexing your messages (a one-time process which can take quite a bit of time if you have a large inbox), performing a search displays the specific parts of the message that contain your search string. This is especially useful when sorting through similar messages.

A handy slider at the bottom of the search results allows you to expand or condense the preview text for each message.

Postbox contains 4 handy buttons in the top right: Attachments, Images, Links, and Contacts. Clicking these buttons creates a new tab and instantly displays a list of all media matching that criteria.

Conversations

Like Gmail, Postbox threads your messages to keep conversations together and help make sense of your messages. When collapsed, the message thread tells you exactly who was involved in the conversation so you’ll never be digging aimlessly through message threads. If you select the main message thread, you can view all subsequent conversations in one window.

Sharing and Social Networks

If you use Facebook, you can log in with your account and Postbox will automatically import your friends’ email addresses and pictures. Postbox also lets you update your statuses for Facebook, Twitter, and FriendFeed from within the application.

Support for OmniFocus and Things

Streamlining the Getting Things Done lifestyle, Postbox includes support for 2 of the most popular task managers, OmniFocus and Things. With Postbox, you’ll now be on top of your work, not drowning in it.

It all sounds great, doesn’t it? Let’s get started — want to win a copy?

I recently switched from Entourage to Apple Mail because the latter was crashing multiple times a day, but the former seems too limited. Tabs and some of the other features in Postbox make it seem like the ideal mail app, and I’d love to give it a try!

When Postbox first came out I downloaded the beta and quickly fell in love. Unfortunately Postbox began to charge for their program, and I could not justify the expense due to the similarities of Postbox to Thunderbird. Given the choice, however, I find Postbox to be a much better e-mail client. Postbox’s search is speedier and its RSS reader is more efficient. Also, the interface has a cleaner look.

Have used Thunderbird since it came out, but it always has been lacking in features and the addons are surprisingly sparse compared to Firefox. Would love the chance to give an “enhanced” email client a go to replace what I’m using now.

The extra features of Postbox will be of great benefit when contacting our students.

Postbox can show all attachments and links from the message you are reading which is great when you want to find something specific

Keeping them informed of their progress and dive trips can be done very well with Postbox

I was looking for perfect email client for my mother. Thunderbird seemed a good choice because of simplicity but we were disappointed a bit by version 3.0 which new features comparing to 2.0 are nothing special actually. Postbox is like thunderbird on steroids but unfortunately it’s not free and that’s why it would be nice to win a copy.

I am a moderator of two Yahoo Groups – one of which has 5000 members – that’s a lot of emails on a daily basis, and every now an again, I need to search them for specifics. This sounds like a useful piece of software for that. I already use Thunderbird, but it isn’t perfect and the search function doesn’t work as well as I would like.

Thanks – I recommended this on facebook.

Although I can use gmail offline I still miss something in not using a true email client. I wish I had known about Postbox while it was in beta, so I could give it a try. I’d like to win a copy of Postbox so I can road test it.

I recently started a new job & with having a new e-mail address (and my 10+ others), I’ve taken the initiative to evaluate all of my Mac-based options for mail programs ~ I certainly want the BEST!!!

I’m trying to switch over from using a Windows based program (I’m not naming any names, but I’ll just say I am SO over using that). ;-) Would love to make the complete switch over from having to use even my “virtual” PC.

Currently I’m trying out Mail for Mac (of course),
and Thunderbird (interesting that you mention Thunderbird here, seeing as you’ve taken the code for this and IMPROVED it).

So, now I just HAVE to try Postbox!

This is an absolute superb email client. It has an amazing searching ability and sniffs out every piece of email that you had ever send, received or began to compose. It is very fast and thats what I like the most. I have used it’s trial version in the past and I would love to have a code for the full version.

Thank you very much MakeUseOf for organizing this giveaway!!

Managing email and networking accumulation is one of the biggest challenges for small business owners who need to be on top of the work they love and keep in touch with the people they love at home. Integration of status updates and microblogging into a solid open source app is ideal for this.

I’ve been using Postbox since it was in alpha/beta shape and really, really enjoyed it. They are definitely developing a powerful, “future-thinking” communications platform (as opposed to the stalled development of Thunderbird, or the flawed development of Outlook). However, I am on a radically tight budget, and just can’t afford the registration price for this otherwise outstanding product.

I used Postbox during its free beta. I absolutely loved it and was excited about it. I told everyone I know to switch to it. I put it on my Windows partition too. I had been searching for a good Windows mail client and had finally found it. I had been using Apple Mail on my Mac partition (my primary computer) and had gotten tired of it. I went looking for something new and found this.

Then I lost my job right before this came out of beta and never had the money to buy it. So I’ve been using Thunderbird ever since and it’s just not the same. Not to mention I have constant problems with Thunderbird. The delete button always stops working. I get it fixed and then it breaks again. It crashes. I have add ons that don’t work. Thunderbird is great but I still miss Postbox.

I would like to win because I like winning. We all need a private email client, especially one that is new on the market and is somewhat like Thunderbird, which I used for years. Postbox is new and has many of the same although enhanced features of Thunderbird, it will be another great tool in my toolbox.

I’ve recently picked up my first Mac after 20 years of being a PC user, and while I have been trying to adjust, the one stumbling block I’ve hit is email. The default OSX Mail client is good, but is lacking certain key features I’d like to have. I’ve tried Thunderbird, but it is both overkill and cluttered, and while I like Mailplane, I feel the need to move away from Gmail a bit.

Postbox seems to have a nice, clean interface that is easy to use, but also some rather compelling, yet simple features I am dying to try out. Tabs and Conversations are such simple innovations, but work wonders for enhanced productivity.

Mostly I want my mail to be like my new Mac. Efficient, built to suit my needs, simple and elegant.

Since I am a mac guru. I must say.. I have Postbox. what an amazing program. first the other e-mail clients.

*Mail- Mail for Mac is simple but for multi tasking. it lags!

*Thuderbird–works well… but too many crappy add ons. just like firefox when you try to add on all these “widgets and what not” it screws up your browser and most is stupid stuff you get rid of and not useful.

    BEHOLD POSTBOX!!!!

from using it for a day is great… but, I think you people trying to win it have a better luck looking for a “patched version”

I am a volatile person. Not in a crazy or dangerous way, mind you (well ok, maybe a wee bit batty) but more in a All-Over-The-Place, Not-Quite-Sure-What-Goes-Where-Or-Where-I-Decided-To-Store-That-Thing-I-Need-This-Time. So I find it more than a little ironic when friends comment on how organized I am. I am not organized. I am Chaos Personified. I just do my best to search out those things in life that might make it possible to help me to actually be organized. Or at the least, those things that can sync with a decent calendar/email system that will remind me to put on pants before I leave the house. Please. Help me remember to put on pants, MakeUseOf Gods. The world will be happier for it. Trust.
