saints row the thirdI usually do not use this space to talk about one specific game. I try to keep things broad, with round-ups and opinion pieces on various important matters in the video game world. Sometimes I rant about why digital distribution might suck 4 Reasons The Digital Distribution Of Video Games Will Make Your Life Worse [MUO Gaming] 4 Reasons The Digital Distribution Of Video Games Will Make Your Life Worse [MUO Gaming] Last week we looked at why we should not hate the inevitable future where all video games are distributed digitally. There are some compelling reasons to put your ball in digital distribution’s court, but there... Read More . Today, I am throwing that out the window in favor of telling you why you need to play Saints Row: The Third. Seriously, if you skipped it when it came out, you need to drop what you are doing and get the game.

The reasons you need to play Saints Row: The Third are vast. One could write a dictionary-sized book about all the things that the game brings to the table. There is the deep, emotional storytelling, the characters that feel like something out of a classic novel and artfully designed scenery. Did you believe any of those reasons? I seriously hope not, because if that is what you are looking for from Saints Row, you will be incredibly disappointed. The game does bring a lot of awesomeness to the table, but certainly not for any of the reasons I just made up.

Insane Action

Saints Row: The Third does everything that Grand Theft Auto wants to do, but can’t because it is grounded in some sort of realism. Saints Row decided to forget about reality. They made the most over the top action scenes imaginable. By placing the game in what feels like the real world, and pulling out all the stops in terms of action, it makes the game feel like something truly epic.

Would you like to fight bad guys while falling out of an airplane? No problem, they have you covered. Have you dreamed of battling helicopters from your giant apartment on the top floor of a skyscraper? You can do that too! Nearly anything insane you could want to do in an open world game is at your fingertips here.

Shockingly Good Story

It is hard to believe, but if you strip away all of the ridiculousness from the game, the story is actually very interesting. You are the leader of the Third Street Saints, a ruthless gang which has grown so popular that people practically worship you. There are toys, movies and posters of your gang everywhere. However, in spite of this, you still have to do gangster things like rob banks and tussle with rival gangs.

The craziness actually makes the story more impressive, because it must be challenging to make a game so ridiculous, while still making the player care about what happens in the story. It takes a talented team to find the balance between the ridiculous stuff that happens and keeping the story grounded.

It is a fun story to be a part of, and it is made even better by the great characters. Your crew in the game consists of a wide range of people, and they are voice-acted by talented individuals. As the game develops, you gain a real attachment to some of the people, and when you are on missions that involve saving them from some kind of situation, you really care about their well-being. Plus, there is a gentleman who only speaks with auto-tune – that makes the game a ten out of ten alone!

Co-op Multiplayer

As I mentioned before, Saint’s Row: The Third is ridiculous. It is filled with over the top action and general craziness. Take that awesomeness and allow you to play it with a friend and you have something that is truly special.

The online co-op for Saints Row is so incredibly fun, it takes a game that is already amazing and brings it to an entirely new level. If you love doing crazy stuff with your friends, you need to play this game.

The Character Creator

Making a character in Saints Row is almost as fun as playing it. You can make a cool looking suave gangster or some kind of over the top character that looks completely out of place in the world. You can really get creative making your character if you should so choose.

Just be careful not to spend all of your time making your character. Remember, there is an awesome game waiting for you when you finish fine-tuning yourself.

Conclusion

Go to the store and buy Saints Row: The Third right now. Turn off your computer, drive to your favorite video game store and get it. After you’re finished, come back here and tell me in the comments how right I am, and how you had the time of your life playing this game.

For me this is the best game ever. All the parody. All the crazy games inside. Just fun without compromise.

Particularly my little brother hated Saints Row 1 so much he still calls it Schaisse Row. Granted, it wasn't much of anything, so the name is just a match.

wow. I've played it already, but it didn't impress me...after playing like two hours I removed the game totally. Maybe I missed something? Liked the Saints Row II though...
I love GTA and it's still on my computer and I play it from time to time.

Do I need to have played the other titles beforehand? And is Saint's Row 2 any good because I could get hold of a copy really cheap from the used games bargain bin.

Two is good, but you don't need it to play three.
