Your PC Hardware: From A to Z [Download or Read Online]

Even the best free software is useless without hardware, yet how many of us actually know how their computer works? Teach yourself by reading the latest free guide form MakeUseOf: “Your PC, Inside and Out.”

This amazing free guide covers the computer’s chassis, power supply and motherboard, and is only the first half of a two-part volume.

In this guide Lachlan Roy breaks the computer down into its different components. For each component he describes its function, explains the different specifications to look out for and provides a bit of history, too. You will learn to identify the various parts in your computer, and possibly even how to upgrade it yourself.

Expect to learn:

  • The difference sizes of chassis on the market
  • How cooling works, including the varying models of airflow
  • What to look for in a power supply
  • Why to avoid cheap power supplies
  • What a motherboard does
  • The components of a motherboard

As with all our manuals, “Your PC: Inside and Out Part 1″ is free, so enjoy!

Also, stay tuned for “Your PC: Inside and Out Part 2″, which will cover storage media, memory, CPUs, graphics cards and more!

Congratulations. How proud your parents must be that their retarded child has learned how to use the Internet. Next challenge: how to wipe your own ass.

Have you thought about making these manuals EPUB’s and making them available for free distribution through B&N, Amazon and Adobe Digital Editions? These manuals really do fill a great need for simple straight forward information. Thanks for providing these, I find them to be quite informative.

    • jhpot January 11, 2011

It’s on my to-do list, MT. For now enjoy the PDF’s!

  • Tonybatty January 11, 2011

This is very informative, I have passed it on to other friends who can make use of this.
because we tell them time and again of the highly technical term, when they can’t solve a simple problem and we tell them it is an (ID10T) problem. * (IDIOT).

Use Calibre to convert the pdf to mobi or other formats .

    • jhpot January 12, 2011

It’s possible, but not clean. When we convert the guides it will be much more usable than that.

How about the download link? I mean is it OK if I put the ebook in a file hosting such Ziddu, and pointing the download link to Ziddu. But, of course I will link to makeuseof.com as the resource and not change anything from the ebook.

    • jhpot January 13, 2011

Absolutely. If you’d be so kind, however, use this download link:

I’m an avid reader of makeuseof.com and this is a godsend!
I am in the middle of upgrades and this is perfect timing. I especially like the fact that you didn’t use a bunch of technical jargon that is impossible to understand. I enjoy looking at the examples you provided as well! Thanks again to Lachlan and MakeUseOf!

  • Aibek January 20, 2011

Thanks for the kind words Vernon.
Totally agree, Lachlan Roy did an amazing job on this guide.

Subscribers still have access to the manuals without Facebook, through makeuseof.com/pages. You’ll find a small button beneath the Facebook registration button, saying “or subscribe by email.” Click that and you’ve got access if you’re already a subscriber!
