Hi guys, can anyone please tell if Avast is better than Panda or vice versa .. currently i am using Avast home edition.
Is it a better option than Avast Home? Please do Reply asap.

The Panda antivirus software is not ideal but it does the job for specific viruses and spyware. Users have mentioned that it failed to pick up on malware that other software picked up on. The software also often picks up files without software and wants to delete them. Do not allow the software to automatically do this. Make sure you look over the selected “viruses” before deleting any of them, or you could be deleting real data! The benefits of Panda include a really nice user interface and the way it is spread out between the Internet and your desktop, which allows the software to automatically upgrade when newer versions are released and take as little memory as possible on your hard drive.

It really seems mediocre at best, as you can easily read from the various comments here: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=240731

When I tried to install it in order to test it, it asked me to remove NOD32 first and I had to decline and cancel the installation. In any case, when this product leaves the beta state, its effectiveness will be reduced for good.

As far as whether it will continue to be free, blog comments from Panda disagree with their FAQ. Their bloggers insist it will continue with the current features. This could make sense since a large group of individual users would provide more varied input to their “collective intelligence” which they can then sell to businesses.

The load is minimal in the long run. That said, when first installed it does grab an inordinate amount of resources to perform its initial full scan. Once that is done things seem to settle down. I’ve been running about six hours today and its consumed a bit over a minute of CPU.

So far it hasn’t found anything on my PC except for one false positive. Then again, neither did Avast or Avira, which were the last two products I tried. The comprehensive tests I’ve read seem to put it in the middle of the pack but the theory behind a cloud AV should let it become more accurate over time.

I’d recommend it.

As someone else mentioned, it’s a very average AV and testing with this version shows that it misses a large amount of malware. I’d never depend on this to protect me.

initially, i thought panda cloud was a great idea – IS a great idea. i installed it and gave it a go, thinking I’d keep my other anti-virus installed but inactive.
after the first reboot, though. i noticed that my system took really long to load and there were significant hiccups. the task manager revealed that my processor was at 100%, all 4 cores were working full time and my ram was full. the process behind it was one of the two panda cloud processes.

needless to say i uninstalled it. i am very happy with avira

but the idea behind panda cloud is great! absolutely brilliant.

a cloud is a storage concept not a software concept…

whatever his QoS, this soft only wish to buzz on press releases not on other ways…

You are right. Panada will continue to offer it for free, just without the definitions.

From http://www.cloudantivirus.com/help/01/en/nnv_en.htm#05.htm “Once the Beta period has finished, the detection capacity of the antivirus will reduce considerably as it will no longer have access to our Collective Intelligence servers.

From then on, you can get the free version and benefit from special conditions when you buy the full service.”

So, I guess if you want an AV solution without the most current definitions……

Look, some things are worth paying for. A good antivirus solution (or 2) is one of them.

This dosen’t change the fact that this is one of the worst AV around. A quickscan that takes 30-40 mins is ultra-slow. Leading solutions (paid) and free solutions are much faster with the fastest of ~1-5mins

I’ve been using this for a couple of weeks now and I quite like it. I did disable letting it automatically deal with viruses after it deleted a couple of files due to false positives.

I’ve been told after the beta period the cloud info won’t still be free but I don’t know how accurate that is.

Actually not true in this case. Per the FAQs on the developer blog:

YES. Absolutely. 100%. Free.

Remember that this is BETA. FREE will end when the BETA ends.

This is actually a good idea for Panda because pirates can’t steal the service.
