It really depends on the PDF. Zotero just reads the metadata from the PDF file itself, which for many journal articles is incomplete or incorrect, especially for articles more than a few years old. Mendeley does server-side checking to make sure that what’s written in the PDF metadata section is actually the right info.

According to the About Us Page, the investor group behind this app is pretty impressive. With social lists, shared collections, and all the social networking features, Mendeley one could easily surpass Zotero.

I've tried Mendeley, but Zotero seems to extract metadata from PDFs more accurately, in my experience.

You wouldn’t be making them available to the public per se. The metadata would be available for others to see but the actual PDF document wouldn’t. You can however create controlled shared groups to collaborate on documents and also self-publish your own authored works.

Does this program assist with organizing if you already have PDFs on your computer? Also, because many of the PDFs were obtained while I was a student (I would have had to pay otherwise) would I be redistributing the work illegally if I were to upload it to Mendeley and make it available to the public?
