I have around 60GB of music files that I access and play on a daily basis using MediaMonkey.
I've been using MM for three years (paid Gold version) through several updates and versions of the software and on different operating systems (W2K , XP home and XP Pro) and have never had a problem.
MediaMonkey simply organizes and plays my large music collection better than any other software I've ever tried, and that's why I use it.
If I could add one feature it would be the ability to also handle video clips, since I would like to integrate music videos with my audio files. But even without this feature MM outshines all the others I've ever tried. And you can get it for free - what more can I say?

DO NOT USE MEDIAMONKEY!!!!!!!
I was looking for an alternative to Itunes for so many reasons that everyone else out there can name and I came across MediaMonkey and installed it. This was a big mistake!
I own a 160GB Ipod Classic with close to 29,000 songs on it. As you can assume it has taken countless hours to try and get this IPod set up the way I want it. When I found MediaMonkey I was impressed to find that you could update your tags with all the pertinent information from the net like covers, date of recording etc…
The first problem encountered was when updating “one” album worth of information it took anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes which is very slow. Conversely in Itunes I could upload over 100 songs including all track information in the same amount of time. What I found upon going into task manager was that MediaMonkey was using at the max 154 MB of RAM and 54% CPU usage of a 2.9 GHZ Dual Core machine. Plus other things running on the machine came to a grinding halt. This is quite unbelievable.
The second problem and probably the most disconcerting was that at these times MediaMonkey when viewed in task manager spent most of the time in “Not Responding” mode. The only thing I can assume is that at this time the Ipod is being written to and the application is not programmed to multitask. This theory is further backed by the fact that if you are playing a song on MediaMonkey at this time it actually starts to skip. This is the most dangerous time to have something go wrong with the program as will be explained.
During one of these “Not Responding” times the program crashed and when I brought it back up 5000 songs were missing and all my playlists that I painstaking set up seem to be gone. I looked in explorer and and saw that I still had 141 GB of music and what seems to be the playlists. However MediaMonkey or Itunes will not recognize them.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling MediaMonkey, I rebooted the Ipod numerous times and run diagnostics and error checking on the drive. Nothing has worked so far. I cannot believe that such an inferior product has been given such good reviews.
The people who coded this product should not be allowed near a keyboard or a computer again.
In conclusion,
DO NOT USE MEDIAMONKEY!!!!!!!
P.S. MediaMonkey I will be propagating this review all over the net.

The best thing about MM is its extensibility using scripts. There are may scripts already in the forums, like ones to add lyrics automatically, scrobble your music library using last.fm and so on. Definately the best tool to organize your music library.

Man, what is with the "SLEEPY" comment above? :D
Another cool thing to do with MM: Auto leveling of music files, permanently or temporarily.

Hey!! thanks alot for posting this article. I have like 14 GB worth of sound files and organizing them is one hell of a job. I've tried various softwares but have not been satisfied with any so far. I am hoping that with the responses I see on this post, media monkey would be a good option to try out. I think media monkey should be advertised on a wider scale. I use this tool called MyPRGenie (www.myprgenie.com/technology/) for all my press content and I think its a great service which connects you to the customers instantly. Must try!
