Only On PlayStation: 5 PS3 Exclusives Releasing 2013 [MUO Gaming]

playstation 3 console super slim Only On PlayStation: 5 PS3 Exclusives Releasing 2013 [MUO Gaming]This year could be the year that both the PS3 and Xbox 360 are superseded by new, more powerful consoles. Which means that the existing offerings, from Sony and Microsoft respectively, are starting to show their age a little. However, the dying days of a console are often littered with great games that have been in development for many years and are released at a time when the user base is at its largest.

We’ve already looked at cross-platform titles coming in 2013, and now it’s time to talk exclusives. The PS3 has a deserved reputation for the quality and quantity of its exclusives, with the Xbox 360 lagging behind. With the exception of the Halo and Gears Of War series I doubt Sony would swap any of their exclusives for Microsoft’s exclusives.

The PS3 has a number of great PlayStation-only titles due for release in 2013, and what follows are five of the best that are definitely worth getting excited about.

Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time

sly cooper thieves in time Only On PlayStation: 5 PS3 Exclusives Releasing 2013 [MUO Gaming]

ETA: February 2013
In A Word: Sneaky

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is set to be the fourth game in the Sly Cooper series, and the first since 2005 when Honor Among Thieves hit the PS2. The game will also be appearing on the PS Vita, but the PS3 version will be superior. And it’s a PlayStation exclusive as far as home consoles go. So it counts.

The story carries on where the last game left off, with Cooper reuniting with his gang in order to keep the pages of the Thievius Raccoonus (a book about Sly’s ancestors) from disappearing through time. The gameplay remains the same, with the player able to employ a variety of techniques and abilities to solve quests.

God Of War: Ascension

ETA: March 2013
In A Word: Epic

God Of War: Ascension is set to be the seventh game in the God Of War series, but we’re actually going back in time with this prequel set around 10 years before the first God Of War game and six months after Kratos killed his wife and child. Kratos only did this evil deed after being tricked by Ares.

The game shows a more human Kratos seeking to sever his ties to Ares, which he will do by defeating the three Furies. The story mode has been given a makeover, with a revamped combat system, and, for the first time in the series, God Of War: Ascension will feature a multiplayer element with several modes augmented by incremental additions to the story.

The Last Of Us

the last of us Only On PlayStation: 5 PS3 Exclusives Releasing 2013 [MUO Gaming]

ETA: May 2013
In A Word: Alive

The Last Of Us
is a brand new IP from Naughty Dog, the developers responsible for the Uncharted series. The new game clearly shares some elements with its older brother, but The Last Of Us looks to be more brutal than Uncharted ever managed to be. This down-and-dirty survival horror-style gameplay is necessary thanks to the background to the story.

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic America, with the two main protagonists — A middle-aged man named Joel and a teenage girl named Ellie — having to take on fellow survivors, the Infected, and military forces. Each situation encountered on the journey can be tackled in a number of different ways, with stealth, melee combat, and weapons all at the player’s disposal.

Beyond: Two Souls

ETA: End 2013
In A Word: Ethereal

Beyond: Two Souls is the latest game from Quantic Dream, previously responsible for Fahrenheit and Heavy Rain. Anyone who has played either of those titles will know at least some of what to expect from Beyond: Two Souls. Stunning visuals, a convoluted story, and strong acting/motion capture are the order of the day.

Quantic Dream doesn’t so much make games as create experiences. A story is woven, and it’s up to the player to lead their character through it as well as they can. Beyond: Two Souls looks to follow this formula, with Ellen Page playing Jodie Holmes as she sets out to discover who or what her lifelong companion Idan is. With questions of mortality asked, and perhaps answered, in the process.

Puppeteer

ETA: End 2013
In A Word: Unique

Puppeteer is a platformer with a difference currently in development at SCE Japan Studio. As can be seen in the trailer embedded below, Puppeteer employs a strange mix of 2D and 3D reminiscent of the LittleBigPlanet titles. So while you’re essentially traveling to the left or right of the screen, you can move in and out of the screen as well.

The game tells the story of a boy named Kutaro who is turned into a puppet by the evil Moon Bear King before having his head bitten clean off. Which is common practice, obviously. This doesn’t deter Kutaro, who promptly finds a replacement head, steals a pair of magical scissors, and sets off on an adventure to find his real head and return home once more.

Conclusions

The PS3 already has a healthy dose of unmissable games available for it, with a mix of cross-platform and exclusive titles forming the best of the best on the Sony console. These five could well displace some of those games, forcing their way into the list of absolute must-play PlayStation 3 games. That is assuming that they live up to the considerable hype attached to them. Which is never guaranteed.

What do you think of this list? And of the PS3 in general? If you’re an Xbox 360 owner are there any titles here that you wish were coming to your console? As always let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

The Last Of Us may be one of those rare first-day purchases for me personally.

I kind of want a ps3, but I already have an xbox and don’t really have the spare $250 + money for new games.

It is hard to justify owning both. You may find the price drops to acceptable levels when the next-gen PlayStation lands, probably later this year :)

I don’t have any of the third generation consoles currently, but looking at this list and stumble upon the name of Naughty Dog makes me smile. If ‘The Last of Us’ is as epic and innovative as Crash Bandicoot was, that company’s going strong.

WOW, you haven’t played Uncharted series? You have missed the best games of this generation on ANY console.

The PS3 has totally owned this generation in terms of games.

I miss Crash Bandicoot! Naughty Dog has gone on to bigger and better things though, and the Uncharted series is truly fantastic. Once the PS4 launches you should be able to pick up a PS3 on the cheap :)

I really need to get a summer job. I can’t wait to see what Naughty Dog will do with an apocalyptic game! I have been waiting for a new Sly Cooper game since I finished number 3, and how can God of War get any more epic?
