Porn, and people’s consumption of it, is a taboo topic, but we feel it’s a suitable subject for this week’s MakeUseOf Poll.

Don’t worry, as this article is perfectly Safe For Work, unless you consider a picture of two ladybirds enjoying coitus to be obscene. Which it isn’t, obviously. If you do consider it to be so then you should skip to another article immediately, because this may not be your cup of tea.

You’re All Addicts (Probably)

To answer this week’s question please scroll down the page until you see the Poll staring back at you. But first, we need to look at the results from last week, when we asked, “How Much Time Do You Spend Online Every Week?

Out of a total of 176 votes, 42.1% chose All day, every day, or so it feels (35 hours or more), 29% chose Too much, I admit (21-35 hours), 17.6% chose Probably 2-3 hours a day (14-21 hours), 5.7% chose At least one hour a day (7-14 hours), 3.4% chose I’m careful not to overdo it (4-7 hours), 1.7% chose Barely enough to even register (0-2 hours), and 0.6% chose Only very occasionally (2-4 hours).

Interestingly, these results almost lined up perfectly, with the longest time getting the most number of votes, and the second shortest time getting the least number of votes. This suggests that most of you use the Internet for several hours every day, both during the week and at weekends. And we actually should have offered higher weekly totals to get a truer reflection of your Internet usage. You Internet addicts Are You Addicted to the Internet? The Seedy Side Of The Internet

Pornography has been a mainstay of the Web pretty much since its inception. Even through the dark days of dial-up, when you had to wait for a picture to load, porn was popular. And these days it’s probably more popular than ever, and more easily accessible than ever before.

We want to know your attitudes to online porn in general, starting with the simple question of how often you look at it. I watch NO porn on the internet - thats lame - i download via torrents only what i want and watch OFFLINE. Or better download through sites that have screen cap and choose those clips that i desire. Thats productivity, and that way i remain productive on the job and while watching what i need to watch.

While I may have a porn habit Lets not call it an addiction, instead lets call it market research. You see I administer to a couple websites and have designed some, all of which are in the xxx/adult entertainment industry.

I think most equate porn with video, but not everyone find graphic depiction tasteful. There are many forms of media. I'd say 'only ever by accident' to porn video, but I have that guilty pleasure indulging in M-rated fictions and fanfictions whenever I feel the urge (around once or twice a month, each could last a few hours to a few days). None of the choice presented fits my bill as they seem to escalate too quickly between one option to another.

I choose not to disclose my usual handle here due to personal reasons, though.

It is fascinating to note that the rate of internet "use" (aka wide adoption) is the same as porn "addiction" (aka wide appeal). That is, everybody except about 9% of the population. Since 10% of everybody lies about porn, you compute your own Chi-squareds.

I have a nude model slide show that I'm always updating and adding to. I like to work out while it's playing in the morning to give myself a little testosterone boost. As for video porn, about once/twice a week to get things going on date nights-lol.

Who the hell has the time to spend 35 hours+ a week looking at porn?

Up until about mid December, it was every day and often multiple times a day... or worse, for one verrrry long stretch of the day. When I think about the hours I, er, put into online porn, it's staggering. And this is for years of keeping up that habit.

But I finally got sick of the wasted time and went on a self-imposed porn fast, augmented by a fapping fast too. The benefits were surprising. It was a bit painful after about two weeks of no masturbation, so I gave in on that. Now I try to keep it to a minimum of a few times a week. The porn fast lasted about a month before I caved there too.

    However, some interesting things:

First, I found myself relating better to my wife. I'm not sure if that's because I didn't feel like I had a secret to hide or because I was more productive or I was just more focused on her as a woman again, or some mix of all three.

Second, I found my "cravings" in the porn category considerably normalized. The more I'd looked at the stuff, the more I guess I'd gone for harder and harder content. But after the break, I find myself wanting to look only at the more normal, natural stuff. I'm even deeply turned off by the hardcore fetish material I used to find alluring.

Now I do look again, and hopefully not on some kind of greased slope where I'll be back into it as deep or deeper than before. But I only look for a few minutes at a time and once or twice a week. Let's hope I'll keep it contained at that level.

Male, late sixties. I gave up the free porn sites for lent, after confessing to my best friend - my wife. I hated the deceit. I have kept it up and hope to continue the "fast" long after Easter.

A few issues. Firstly what is porn? I believe a committee of learned folks, including senior representatives of the church was commissioned by UK government many years ago. They spent a long time looking at porn and broke it down into 3 categories. Erotic (lingerie), Explicit (detailed nudity, "normal" sexual activity) and Obscene (involving violence, exploitation, the young or vulnerable etc). I'd like to think most of your respondents fall into the first 2 categories.
Secondly there's a moral issue and it's complicated. The subjects of the images are fellow humans and there is invariably some loss of human dignity involved, it can be argued that it is commonly a transaction, the participant receives some reward like cash, fame/notoriety, the prospect of "making friends".
Third - what does viewing porn say about you? How open about it are you? Are you happy for your parents, children, partner, work colleagues to know what you look at? If not, why not and why are you doing it?
I guess anyone who uses the internet cannot have failed to see examples but seeking out the more salacious content on a regular basis is worrying.
My own opinion is that admiring the human form, especially of the opposite sex is part of our genetic programming but that doesn't call for anatomical detail.

      "Firstly what is porn? "
To quote Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart "I won't take the trouble to define it, but I'll know it when I see it"

"what does viewing porn say about you? "
It says you're only human. Kinsey, Masters & Johnson and all other surveys on human sexuality have found that vast majority of humans do watch or read porn. If you do not, that is your choice, but that choice does not make you any better or worse than the rest of the posters.

I'm a girl so mine is best measured monthly. About twice a month I'll go on a two or three day spree and the rest of the time, I have no desire at all. So on average, once or twice a week.

Pornography is viewed different, some with open arms and others on the front offensive. Let's not forget that it's an entertainment industry that draws people's fantasy and try to lure them into this seductive world where most adults would wanna stay. However, this reaction deposits negative concerns over one's social life if this behavior spirals out of control. Just as the exposure to the internet, Porn is an inevitable process where mild consumption is recommended because priority in real life takes hold.

If childrens are viewing this, they understand too little of what the purpose is and how they should regard it. Pleasure feed us relief not an escape.

I'm single, I'm female, and I love porn. Though I don't spend that much time on the internet watching it. I do spend say several hours at a time, maybe once every few months, collecting the porn so I can replay it later on my Roku. Today alone, I spent 3 hours looking for just the right stuff to replace my old stuff. However, I spend about 1 day a week watching those videos.

I actually make a little money hosting and administering individual web sites that include adult content. And I work at home half the time and I'm a single guy so porn so it's entirely fair to say that adult content is a normal part of my life.

There might be a day or two a week I do not look at porn but I have about 3 sites that are good that I check almost daily. I look for the videos in the categories I like that I have not seen yet. I have about two to three categories that I do like and just check them for videos that I have not seen yet that I would like. You can place your cursor over the clip and it plays several seconds of what it will show, like a preview. Some of them are very good and are real turn ons. I like the ones that real people are in, not actors or actresses like cuckold films where you can tell the husband is taping his wife with another guy. To see a guy's wife getting totally turned on and having orgasms with another man that is not her husband while in front of the husband is HOT!

I'm a big "Angelica/Ebbi" (Krystal Boyd) fan, she's got some of my all time favorite photo sets and vides to date. So I usually drop by "XXXBunker" or "ImageFAP" every week or so and put an evening into adding to "My Account: Favorites". Though I only keep my Top 10 videos on my "Droid X" as well as a copy of my "Angels & Spindels" pics, a lot of which tend to make there way to Reddit's "Grool". So for me I like to see what's happening with my favorite names and add their latest to my "XXXBunker" and "ImageFAP" accounts, but truth be told I'm the kind of guy who likes a "Daily Routine" and getting my "Favorites" into that Routine on a Regular Basis. That goes for everything from "Duck Eggs and Toast" for lunch, to getting my little Swedish Duck cozy every evening.

Anyone who has a "ImageFAP" account can tell you that you'll probably only add 10% or less of the porn you search to your favorites. I've only added two of my videos to my account. both of which I've had in my Favorites for a few years. Maybe it's just the poor use of Tags or maybe it's just the lack of a more intelligent search engine. For example, try searching "Angelica/Ebbi" on "Bing" then on "ImageFAP" the difference is huge when the "Account Holders" actually care about their content.

So while I'm not by any means disappointed with good porn, I don't really enjoy browsing for it near as much as working through a few "Spindles Sets" to my favorites. So when I do log-on, it's to see what's new with my favorite names and tags. Otherwise when it comes to putting an hour or two into working through my "Spindles Sets".

"I like to relax and enjoy my favorites on a regular basis...." ^_^

First, thanks Dave for the thumbs up for my comment on the last poll. As for porn, I have to say, honestly, I used to check it out about once a week, now probably not at all unless it's by accident. I sort of got the "seen one seen them all" attitude and got bored with it. And as for the amount and the availability, even if some sites are cracking down, it's still out there if you want it. Kids are exposed to enough "porn" on tv, even daytime tv, but the stuff online is more explicit and should not be viewed by kids. I have to laugh at the warning on some sites "do not enter if you're under 18", that's like waving a red cape at a bull.
