Nominate Your Favorite Android Apps and WIN a MakeUseOf T-Shirt!

android appsHave an Android device? Like Android apps? Don’t have enough t-shirts? Sounds like a winning combination!

We’re putting together a Best of Android page, much like our Best of Windows and Best of Linux pages. The page will list the 100 absolute best Android apps, neatly divided into categories.

And this is where you come in: I would like to know what are your absolute must-have, “so much better than iOS” applications for Android. What are the Android apps you use every day, the apps you love your device for? They don’t necessarily have to be free, either. Just don’t submit an app you developed yourself! If it’s awesome, I’m sure other users will submit it for you

Oh, and about that t-shirt: Not one, but five MakeUseOf t-shirts will be given out to lucky commenters for nominating their favorite apps. Let the recommendations flow forth!

I’d say there’s a game I fell in love with : Fruit Ninja ! It is not free, though, but for the small price you pay, you get great entertainment everytime you launch the app.

Otherwise, I’m a regular user of Shazam. Here in Paris it is becoming quite popular among the young generations. It’s definitely useful when you hear a song at the pub and just cant’ remember its name. There is a paid version as well as a free one.

Cross-platform Evernote works like a charm on my Android Tablet. Used in conjunction with Dropbox, it makes a convenient way to keep a copy of your files and get organized.

Finally, I’d say File Expert is a wonderful file explorer. It does not require your device to be rooted and can perform a lot of actions. Moreover, it’s free !

I second Shazam.  It’s a wonderful app.  There’s nothing worse than hearing a song and not knowing who the singer / band is. :-/

I am totally hooked on “Alchemy” You start with four elements; earth, air, fire, water, and start combining. So far I have managed to open 103  out of 370 possibilities. Start with easy and obvious; Air + Water = Steam, Fire + Earth = Lava. But keep going and you end up with things like “ectoplasm” = ghost+energy, or “flower” = water + seed. I won’t even tell how you get “The Beatles.” I also have a walking tree, a dragon, and a Yoshi. It’s a hoot – full of creative thinking and fun surprises.

If you are a techy type, WiFi Analyzer is very handy, it tells you signal strength, SSID if broadcast, and what type of security is implemented, great way to figure out if you should change channels, or put in another AP.

Paradise Island, and Farm Frenzy are great as time wasters, after Angry Birds of course  ;-)

Flixter and Netflix are great if you like movies.

Lookout and AVG Antivirus for Security.

Glad to see an Android Best of finally.

Lookout is rather good for security. Although, as I seem to recall finding out about it on Lifehacker, it’s probably rather well-known…
BBC News is a tad more convenient than the website (accessed via Opera).
I’d love to be able to add Fennec (or Firefox Mobile) to this list, but the last time I checked, my HTC Wildfire was one of the few phones it wasn’t ready for…
Oh, and Swype is a wonderful for typing, so that’d probably be the must-have app.

Although my list overall favorite apps would probably be different, here’s my nominations keeping to android vs ipad criteria:

Congress by Sunlight Labs. Just a terrific use of the medium in general.

Tricorder. Absolutely no practical use whatsoever, yet unparalleled amounts of geeky fun.

Unified Remote. Love using this to control my laptop when I’ve got it hooked to my tv for watching Netflix et al.

Wave Launcher. Slick way to launch apps with 1 gesture.

Touch Calendar. Simple, yet very effective front-end to your Google calendar.

Chalk Ball. How can something that simple be so addictive!?

And, from a purely in-your-face-ipad stance, the #1 app that you’ll never get from an ios device has to go to the Amazon App Store… app.

Any Amazon ones are great. The Amazon appstore is the only one I check daily and they offer a free paid app every day for free. Also the Amazon MP3 app is great and they show you a free mp3 download for every day as well as other great bargains for CD’s, individual songs, etc.

    - Taskos (for quick to do list and also syncs with Google tasks)
    - Flick Note (to sync with Simplenote)
    - and, of course, Angry Birds (all  3 versions) for a few minutes of mindless fun)

A really good contest and idea also.
i recommend GMOTE for using remote desktop.
GMOTE is very good android application and have both free and paid versions available.the main thing i like most is you can control your computer with your android device and mouse also. there is another apps called RemoteDroid but its not as good as GMOTE.and if you don’t have WI-FI or wireless networks it also works with your Local IP Address and this features is most attractive.

These are the apps that made me love my Android phone.

FlexT9 – made me not miss my slide-out qwerty. I can input text faster with this.

    Google Maps – truly indispensable

iMapMyRun – GPS maps your walk/run/ride route to show distance and calories burned.  Also good for logging other workout and sports activities to keep your exercise on track.

Gentle Alarm – wakes you up gently

Google Listen – Gets my podcasts over the air.  No sync necessary.

Tasker – Let’s you schedule apps and phone settings (like wifi on/off or GPS on/off) for certain events, like your arrival at home, your morning workout, quiet time, etc.  This app saves me 100 screen taps a day, and makes my phone many times more useful.  For example, when I put the phone in the car dock it launches navigation, enables GPS, turns off wifi, connects to my car bluetooth, and starts playing my podcasts.

ShopSavvy – This is a barcode scanner that does much more  It’s especially useful when I run out of a staple item, I can scan the package and know which store in my area has the best price.  For shopping big ticket items this is a must to keep from overpaying.

Well, my favorite of all time, best game ever, that is programmed so beautifully, responds well, and is addictive enough I could play forever, yet noncommital enough that I am not obsessed with coming back to it is Styx.

I laugh as I see silly iPhone users use their silly “flashlight” apps, trying to illuminate a subject with their LCD backlight.

Then I boldly, with my Android platform which allows greater hardware control than Apple would ever dream of putting in iOS, let out a blazing LED beacon to light the whole room- simply by touching my “LED Light” widget on my home screen.

    LED Light FTW.

I would nominate “Where’s My Droid”. It is a very useful app, and I have used it to find my HTC Hero when I lost it on silent. It turns the volume up when you text the lost phone a phrase like “Where’s My Droid”. It even can give you a GPS location of your phone if you text it something like “GPS My Droid”.

    Productivity:
Astrid Tasks (syncs with Google Tasks and Producteev)
Epistle (Take simple notes. Sync with Dropbox. Period)
    Dropbox (Now on Android!)
ASTRO File Manager (Waaay better than any other file manager out there, and you can install apps from APKs. Win/Win)
RealCalc (Brings the beauty of a Scientific Calculator to Android)
appSaver (Take backups of your apps as APKs, and uninstall and reinstall apps)
Remote Notifier (Install the accompanying app on your PC, and you will be notified of anything on your phone)
uTorrent Remote (Control torrents from your phone)
Catch Notes (Backup note application. Its interface is cleaner than Evernote, and its lighter, but if you use Evernote on the PC, then install Evernote on the phone sync-ing goodness)
NewsRob (RSS News reader. Give it your Google account, and it will download the number of articles you specify, periodically in the duration you specify, so that you can read them offline. Enough incentive to get my Google Reader cleaned up)
    Barcode Scanner (Scans barcodes. Duh!)
Voice Recorder (Refer name of app)
    Stopwatch and Timer (Ditto)
Relax and Sleep (Need some rest? Have problems sleeping? This app has a gazillion noises and you can mix and match them to your convenience, and save them. Enjoy a blissful sleep!)

    Entertainment:
doubleTwist (Media player, with a nice interface. This is better tahn Winamp in my opinion because, it plays video too)
    Skype
Stitcher Podcast Radio (Listen to your favourite shows with no downloading and no syncing problems, and create your own radio station with your favourite shows)
Shazam (Now with unlimited tagging. Heard a song somewhere that you desperately want to find out what. This relieves that itch. Many people prefer SoundHound, because you can hum to it and it identifies the song for you)
Aldiko eBook Reader (Reads ePubs and PDFs and gives you access to several free download sources. Excellent features, and really smooth.)

    Games:
SpeedX 3D (Accelerometer controlled obstacle course races)
Fruit Ninja (Act like a ninja and slash heads , er……..I mean………fruit, with skill)
    Alchemy (Refer above post)
Cut the Rope (Now on Android, and free! You will fall in love with this game’s character OmNom, 10 seconds into the game. Please keep the sound on at least for the first few levels)
Angry Birds, and Angry Birds Rio (Do I even need to explain this?)

DISCLAIMER: This list is by no means exhaustive. These apps are just what I found useful, and I can’t run a lot of apps as I have a Samsung Galaxy 5, which is one of the smallest Android phones. If there is anything better, please suggest them, so that I may keep that in mind when I spring for a new phone (which is not in the near future :’()

I forgot these apps in my above post

Opera Mobile (Super fast. Super interface. Super design. Super everything)
Go SMS Pro (I used to use Handcent SMS, but Go SMS is more colourful. :))
Launcher Pro (Cannot live without his)
    Facebook (Official app)
Twitter (Official app. For those with multiple twitter accounts, you can try twicca, or twidroyd, or tweetdeck – if you want a central hub of all things social, or hootsuite, but if you ask em,the official app is neat enough and gets the job done.)
Android Agenda Widget (All your tasks, events, and stuff, in one central widget. Note, the data from this widget comes from other apps like astrid, google calendar, etc; So you need to have them installed, for the app to function properly)

Stock apps for which there is no better:
    GMail
    Maps
Talk (There are some better alternatives out there, like imo, etc; but Talk generally gets the job done)
Gallery (The 3D effect is good. If you want a quick alternative, or your gallery app broke, because of some upgrading….. (cough cough) not talking out of experience (cough cough), use QPik. Its fast and decent. Does everything that the stock app did, with a more minimal interface)
Google+ (Its come out only now, and its good)
    Calendar
Market (AppBrain has gone down since Google released a web version of Android Market, where you can install apps over the air. I personally don’t think Chomp helps much)

Also, can anyone suggest an app for me for reminders? It needs to be minimal, but preferably feature loaded. Sometimes the stock Alarm/Clock app just doesn’t cut it.

my vote goes to apps like:

    - whatsapp
    - notifo.com
    - mightytext
    - trillian/ebuddy.

Actually applications need to have c2dm to have real-time push without draining battery.

2 of my favs and most used apps (other then email or twitter) are Scanner Radio where you can listen to police and fire scanners for free. When I see something big going on but its not on the radio yet its good to know whats happening. On my way to the doctor this morning the Taco Bell down the street was taped off all around it by police tape with several police cars all around. I tuned into to Scanner and found out police had just found a lady dead and was getting the updates before the media. The other app that I use daily is MakeUseOf. I know it sounds like I’m trying to get on your good side but I really do LOVE this site. I get the email updates and have a bookmark on the home page of my G2 phone. I also am the Guru of MakeUseOf on GetGlue! No better place for reliable information! I tell everyone.
