Ever since the fiasco that is Apple Maps began, iOS users have been running to Google Maps in droves. If you’ve done that yourself, you’d be happy to know that Google has just launched a new update to its mobile mapping service that makes it even more appealing for Apple device owners. This new update adds awesome features such as Google Contacts integration and improved local search results.
Google has made local search faster by adding new icons for restaurants, coffee shops, bars and other places users might be interested in finding. This means that you can now find many types of places on Maps with just a couple of taps, instead of having to type in a search query. For example, if you need a coffee fix, you can tap the search box and then tap the coffee cup icon to see all the coffee shops in your immediate area.
The other major part of this update comes in the form of Google Contacts integration. After downloading the update, type a name of a friend into Google Maps, and if you have their address stored, the app will let you navigate to their house quickly. Of course, you will need to have your Google Contacts synced with your iPhone for this to work. If you don’t know how to do that, follow these instructions.
This update also adds the English version of Google Maps to a total of seven new countries. Users in Bahrain, Egypt, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and UAE will now be able to get access to the many features offered in Google Maps. With this, Google also added the ability to choose between kilometers and miles as a unit of measurement. Note that not all of the new features are available in all countries yet, but Google did not specify which features will where, so your best bet is to download the app and find out.
Did you get the new features in you part of the world?
