Netflix is bringing back Sense8 after passionate pleas from fans. The good news is Sense8 will be back with a two-hour special designed to wrap up all the loose ends. The bad news is that will then be the end of Sense8, with Netflix declining to renew the series for another season.
Netflix was once the home of lots of old shows that had previously aired elsewhere. Now, things are changing, with Netflix culling much of the filler in favor of making its own original shows. This was all going rather swimmingly thank you very much, until Netflix started cancelling shows…
From Cancellation to a Comeback
At the start of June Netflix cancelled both Sense8 and The Get Down. Then Netflix also cancelled Girlboss, another of its big-budget, much-hyped originals. Fans of these three shows were not happy, and expressed their displeasure at these decisions online and to anyone who’ll listen.
There seemed little chance that lobbying Netflix to bring any of these shows back would work. However, Netflix has now announced Sense8 will return for a one-off, two-hour special in 2018. The aim being to tie up the loose ends and give the fans some much-needed closure.
Series creator Lana Wachowski posted a letter on the official Sense8 Twitter account, saying:
“Friends kept calling from all over the world asking, ‘Isn’t there anything you can do?’ And the truth was, no. By myself, there was nothing I could do. But just as the characters in our show discover that they are not alone, I too have learned that I am not just a me. I am also a we.”
“The passionate letters, the petitions, the collective voice that rose up like the fist of the Sun to fight for this show was beyond what anyone was expecting. Improbably, unforeseeably, your love has brought Sense8 back to life. (I could kiss every single one of you!).”
While most Sense8 fans would have preferred to see Netflix commissioning a third season, this should be considered a victory. After all, this is one of the rare occasions when fan power has won out, with a massive moneymaking company changing its mind as a result of pressure.
Better Than Traditional Networks
Netflix deserves a lot of credit here. Sense8 was clearly loved by its small legion of fans, but it wasn’t being watched by enough people to justify its existence. Netflix could have just let it die on a cliffhanger, but the company has instead committed to ending it in the right way. And we cannot name a traditional television network that would have made the same decision.
