The popular Internet video subscription service, Netflix, has made it easier for parents and children to locate and watch kid–friendly movies and TV shows from its video streaming library. The feature is called “Just for Kids” and is available on the PC and Mac for its members in the US and Canada, with similar functionality to come to the Wii, iPad and many other devices.
As of this writing, there is no additional charge for Netflix members for the service. It works with the existing monthly plans and rates.
The Just for Kids selections appear in the menu bar of your Netflix homepage account. Selections are broken down into scrolling categories, including Adventure, Animation, Comedies, and “Watch with the Family” movies.
Over a thousand selections and recommendations include the popular “SpongeBob SquarePants“, “Adventures”, “Selena Gomez”, and “Phineas and Ferb“. Media selections are geared towards ages 12 and under.
Todd Yellin, VP of product innovation at Netflix, said :
To prioritize the selections we work with Common Sense Media, a leading nonprofit that provides trustworthy information and tools so that families can have the choice and a voice about the media they consume.
Of course the best thing about the Netflix service is that kids can watch selections, through the streaming video “Watch Instantly” service, over and over without the extra costs of renting DVDs. However, according to PC World, “Parental reaction on the Netflix blog has been mixed, with many parents asking the service to implement better content controls“.
