National Geographic has launched a new iOS app in celebration of National Park Week, which takes place this week (April 21-29). The app includes extensive guides to 20 national parks in the US, including photos, maps, weather, points of interest and more.
During National Park Week, all 397 national parks in the US are offering free admission, and this new app is a great place to start exploring the possibilities. The app currently includes only 20 prominent national parks such as Yellowstone, the Great Smokey Mountains and Death Valley, but more will be added to the list in time.
National Parks by National Geographic is free to download, as is the first full guide you choose to get. After that, you’ll have to pay to get additional full guides. But even without paying, you can access basic park information such as how to get there, when to go, entrance fees and more. You can also check out some stats about the park, get a 5-day local weather forecast and find nearby points of interest on a map, which you can filter by seasons and activity.
Upon downloading a full guide, you will also get access to photo tips from National Geographic photographers, park secrets, a photo gallery of things to see in the park and an extensive list of hikes, drives and activities for this park.
This app is a great way for National Geographic to stay current and keep up with the times. Unfortunately, though, the app is not made especially for the iPad, so iPad users can either increase the size and miss out on the beauty of the interface, or just make use of the small iPhone-size screen.
