I use O&O Defrag; why haven’t you got Paragon Total Defrag listed? It has to be one of the most thorough defragmenters on the market.

I would say the main difference is defragging speed. The JKDefrag is abt 5 x times faster then default Windows defrag tool.

Doing the defrag process is so ‘old-school’. The new processors and fast hard drives make the results non-noticeable for any end-user speed comparison. I don’t do. It just adds extra wear and tear on the HD causing an earlier death, than not doing…

I was under the understanding that NTFS deals quite well with fragmented files and is designed to handle distributed block storage efficiently. Defragmenting a harddrive provides speed gain only with FAT disk systems and only has advantage if you might need to pursue some data recovery.

I use Diskeeper 2008 pro on my Vista and XP boxes, and it’s awesome. It just has to be installed, and it handles all the defragmentation related tasks on it’s own after that. Even with four 500GB drives on the XP machine, it keeps them in excellent shape, working in the background. Defrags are fast and thorough, and it has many useful features like proactive resizing of the MFT to prevent fragmentation, multiple defrag modes (incl VSS defrag for Vista), excellent UI etc. I think Diskeeper is far superior to the other utilities especially if you have a system with more than one HDD in it.

I’ve worked for CNET and PCMag. We would get questions about this all the time. Through the years of testing most of the defrag utilities we could not really say that any are any better that the default windows defrag. People’s claims of some being faster than others were never seen in the test I’ve conducted.

We would always conclude that it was never worth paying for a defrag utility. The free ones are all based on user preference.

Wasn’t JKDefrag fault. Read their information. They use the same API as Windows Default to do any physical movement of data. It is supplied with Windows.

Now the question would be are you using FAT32 or NFTS format? FAT32 is much less secure and prone to failures.

I choose Contig, but in all actuality I use a front-end for that called “Power Defrag”. It works wonders and does a much better job of defragmenting my HD than the default Windows one does.
