The Internet wouldn't be what it is today if it weren't for domain names. Without this simple concept of words separated by dots, we'd probably be finding websites by IP addresses -- oh, imagine how fun that would be! What a headache.

So on that topic, here are three peculiar facts about domain names that you might find interesting. Trivia, if you will.

1. In 2015, Google offered $6,006.13 to reclaim its domain name. Indeed, for a very brief moment in time, someone by the name of Sanmay Ved managed to take over ownership of google.com -- and then sold it back to Google.

But there was nothing malicious about it. Take a second look at the offered amount. Looks like it spells "GOOGLE" using numbers, right? When Google found out Ved was donating the money to charity, they ended up doubling the amount to $12,012.26.

People sell domain names all the time, but rarely for that much!

2. The very first domain name was symbolics.com. It was registered in 1985 by a now-defunct Massachusetts computer systems firm. Today, the domain name is held by a guy named Aron who purchased it in 2009 just to be able to say that he owns the oldest domain name on the Web.

Pretty cool to think that symbolics.com is now symbolic of something greater than itself, isn't it?

3. Over 275 million domain names exist today, and they're all spread across 1,205 top-level domains (such as .com, .net, and .org). Unsurprisingly, the number of .com registrations significantly outnumber all other top-level domains combined.

So if you've been thinking of registering your own domain name but are having trouble finding one that you like, that's why. The pickings are getting slimmer by the day.
