Mozy is an incredibly smart, highly secure, set-it-and-forget-it backup solution that will not disappoint you. There are no restrictions — just about anything on your computer can be set to be backed up to Mozy’s servers. And you’ll be glad that you did.
This week, we’ll be giving away 5 one-year subscriptions for MozyHome worth, well it’s invaluable — that’s peace of mind for an entire year. How do you win one?
Click to find out.
First, let’s take a quick look at Mozy and see what it’s all about. Mozy allows you to back up any folder on your computer and select whether you want backups to run at specific times or when your computer is idle for the number of minutes that you choose. Files are backed up securely as they are “encrypted locally with military-grade encryption prior to transfer via a 128-bit SSL connection” so that means they’re backed up with the same technology used by online banking. Retrieving your backed-up files is also a breeze as there are five different ways for you to restore them.
Prepping
Mozy makes it easy to back up your data. Sign up for an account (free accounts come with 2GB of online storage space) and download the desktop client, which supports Windows and Mac. You can select the folders that you wish to backup. Mozy groups related folders in Backup Sets so you can, say, backup all your irreplaceable photos (if you have images on your Desktop that you want to save in addition to those in your Pictures folder) in the Photos and Images folder.

You can also edit the Backup Sets so for instance, the Word Processing Documents backup set/folder includes or excludes files depending on file type, size, date of creation, etc.

Of course, if you would like to select specific folders with content that doesn’t fall in these categories, you can always check those folders on the next tab, File System.

Backing up
Mozy lets you choose when and how to back up so you can sit back and relax. You can configure Mozy to run at specific times or when your computer is idle.

You can also choose whether you prefer your computer to be relatively unintemrrupted while the backup process is running (Faster Computer) which means your backup will take longer or whether you want Quicker Backups. Either way, the entire process will be quick because Mozy’s incremental backup system is smart enough to automatically detect and back up only new and/or changed files.

Restoring your backups
Mozy lets you retrieve your backed-up files in several convenient ways. You can right-click on backed-up files in Windows Explorer to restore them to previous versions.

Alternatively, you can go to the Mozy virtual drive and restore from there.

The desktop client also has a Restore section in case you already have it open.

You can also head to the website to retrieve your files (select the version from up to 30 days in the past) or place an order for a CD of your Mozy-backed-up files.

Mozy works well for people who want to back up their computer data automatically to the cloud and don’t have time or can’t remember to manually backup to CDs or external drives. Mozy allows you to schedule backups only when it’s convenient for you. Also, rest assured that your files are properly secured and safe with Mozy.

I want to win this because I don’t want to lose all the information and photos on my computer, since both of my computers are about to see their last days.
I have crappy backup for my data and need some assurance and organization! Mozy looks incredible and I’d be grateful. That’s why!
I have already lost all my data couple times. So I would like to have Mozy to prevent this situation again.
Very cool tool Mozy for those PC backups, and for your Outlook mail too!
I’d love another awesome system to backup data!
I use my business laptop for personal use as well (with permission) but only my business files are allowed to be backed up. I need a solution for my non-work stuff!

I’ve been using Mozy for 2 years now, and I have nothing to worry about with regards to my data.
I’d love to win so I don’t have to cry over my failed backups anymore!
I’d love to win. I already use MozyHome and it works very well.

I’d like to win because of the automated nature of MozyHome, that way just set the backup and let it do it’s thing.
I luvvv free stuff
I want to win because we still have a dead hard drive that we con’t afford to have restored to get the baby pictures of our daughter and son off of, and this would really help that from happening again.
I would love to have an offsite backup solution to add to my Time Machine Backups.
Mozy rocks! I’ve had it for about three weeks now. The initial back up (21g) took a few days, but since then it’s smooth sailing.
Would LOVE to win a subscription :)

I want to win because I have been using DropBox for some time now and I wish to compare the same with Mozy and make an informed decision.

I’d like to win this because I have GBs of important files that aren’t currently backed up offsite.
I have so much data saved into what amounts to a total of 13 internal and external drives. I’ve got one drive for every kind of data to backup (pictures, documents, photos, wav files, applications, etc) and keeping track of all this is a nightmare! If I could dump it all into one or two 2tb drives, I can back that one machine up and never have to worry about it again!
I’m gonna buy this either way, but saving me the first year cost would go a long way
thanks makeuseof and mozy!

I’ve never used a serious backup solution before. This would be a good start.
This would be great to have for backup, especially since I have a work & home mac to backup and my external backup drive just died.

I would like to backup my files in order to provide peace of mind and to make sure that if anything were to happen to my computer while in college that I would be able to recover my documents with ease. It would also help to backup my family’s photos that are stored on my computer.
Been using Mozy for a while now and starting to run out of the free space so winning one of these would solve that.
I’m using dropbox, though. free acount. It’s not enough for me. Lately, I wasted all my data, documents, and music files aprxmately 50GB, because of my wrong backup plan while install a Win7. I need this Giveaway guys!
I always stress to my friends and family the importance of backing up your stuff. A service that allows you to set-it and forget-it is a no-brainer.
To win would be an awesome improvement over my current backup method which is hit-or-miss. I manually copy my most important documents and files to two USB thumb drives when I remember, which is not very often because I do not always have the time. Also, the USB drives are not encrypted and if lost…do not even want to go there. MozyHome would lift a HUGE weight off my shoulders! Hoping to win a copy!
Backup External Hard Drive….. Just died and I lost all. I guess the online backup would have saved the files for me. Live and learn….. MozyHome is something I would have great us for now…
I would love to have a really good offsite backup solution!!
Offsite backup solutions are always a good thing
because my laptop crashed and also my backup hard drive with time machine, super awesome :P
I’m a writer, and I have local backups, but I really should have offsite backups. I’m worried that if my house is robbed or there is a fire, tons of my writing will disappear forever. I know I should work on that problem NOW, but that would take time away from writing. :-/
I would love to win, as I need to do more than just use Time Machine to back up my drive. Earthquakes here in SF might require an off-site/out of state backup!
Working more and more from home and really have not set up a solid back up system. This sounds perfect.
Because there is no proper backup solution for Windows that can compete with Time Machine.

Currently I have an at home backup solution but no redundancy in case of fire, theft, etc. Mozy would provide that next level of protection that everyone should have but is not common place in people’s homes just yet. Here’s to hoping to win a year’s subscription and potentially continuing that service for years to come.
P.S. I tried logging in through FB connect but kept getting the following error so I used my email instead:
Invalid Argument
The Facebook Connect cross-domain receiver URL (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/mozy-minireview/?fbc_channel=1#fname=_opener&%7B%22t%22%3A3%2C%22h%22%3A%22fbCancelLogin%22%2C%22sid%22%3A%220.600%22%7D) must have the application’s Connect URL (http://blog.kailoon.com) as a prefix. Same here. Form states: “Login below.” Below where? I also clicked the “Twitter” button on this form, but it does not show that I’m logged in.
One word: “Thesis.” I have the free version, so I had to prioritize what I could back up. This leaves all my other important (but less important) school data unprotected on my fragile Acer laptop…
PS, I couldn’t connect via Facebook

I need a good and reliable backup solution for keeping my important data safe.

I’ve never won anything!
I never won anything!
I should win this contest because sometimes I experiment a little too much with my computers and need to restore all my files and so on. With a Mozy account everything would be much simpler and I doesn’t have to live in fear of losing my files because of a defect external backup disc (happened to my several times)
I use cloud computing, I’m a big fan of it, extensively and would like to have this service to keep my data protected from any problem. I already loose data before.
I have been using Windows Home Sever to back up my computers, but a cloud-based backup is much more beneficial when it comes to emergency preparedness.
I’ve been trying the free version for a couple weeks and plan to purchase. Getting it for free for 1 year would be great!

Been meaning to try one of the online backup solutions for some time. Backing up locally doesn’t really give me (enough) peace of mind that my files are safe. Haven’t been able to decide between Mozy & Carbonite. Of course, winning would make that decision for me! :)
Would love to finally be able to back up my important data and not loose it every 6 months to one pathetic reason or another!

I Would Like To Win Because This is on the top 15, my hard drive has gotten tons of my stuff corupted, and I just hope I win
i like to win because in 33 years i only won a t-shirt
I am often helping my mother restore files, email and many other items that she appears challenged to maintain. Problem is I live in NYC and she’s in Texas – so a subscription for backup for her would be wonderful and allow me to sleep peacefully…

I have had my eye on Mozy a LONG time and have been planning on signing up after my wedding the 22nd of May and am moved into my new digs. This would be a great addition to our new home and network!
me too
I need Mozy so I don’t hozy my stuff!
Hi. I would like to win because I lost hard drives to viruses and not even Linux could recover them. I don’t want that to happen to my newest computer.
Hoping to win. Would like to compare Mozy to CrashPlan.
I have been using Dropbox, but would like to check out Mozy too.
Keep my working newsletter files in Dropbox for easy access rather than going back and forth with a flash drive.

All of my school documents are on my computer. If I lost all of them, I’d die. Call me lazy, but up until now, I still haven’t found a great, easy way to back the stuff up. Something like this would rock.
i never do backups and all these talks of losing data is starting to scare me. so im all for online backups!!!

I am a 40someodd blonde who regularly forgets to even log off the computer, never mind back the thing up. You would be saving my parents (both computer programmers) the semi-annual frustration of walking me through the retrieval of some critical grandchild photo, or re-creating my (always out of balance) checking account. On behalf of both myself and my loving and patient folks…thank you very much!
I would like to win because I modify a lot of files and since my computer crashes frequently, I need a reliable backup system.
am I #100?
Interestingly enough, I had been contemplating getting a backup system “just in case” and then along came @MozyHome! SWEET!
I would love to win because I have fried harddrives, accidentally deleted years of fiction writing, and am a college student, which means my very soul is invested in some of the papers and notes stored on my computer (and various places around my room and the cloud)
I would like to win because I travel a lot with the military and it would be nice if my wife and i can easily sync our docs using this. Plus it’s a good backup tool for my laptops :)
I would love this because I’ve had problems with hard drive failures and it sucks trying to get information back. If I had Mozy, I wouldn’t have to worry about losing all my important information.
Hey thanks for this amazing giveaway!!!
Hmmm….Very nice; a very useful giveaway. MUO is getting better by the day. I liked mozy a lot, especially, it’s ability to backup “locked” files is truly Amazing. My Seagate Barracuda crashed 3 times in the last couple of months! :D I got habituated to loosing data, anyways!…Thanks to my HD! :|
Mac & Windows compatible, automatically scheduling, with a 2 GB free account option (which you have to search for). Mozy may be another viable back-up-to-a-cloud solution. (The posted images are Windows — I hope the Mac version isn’t “windozey”…)

Very USEFUL! Thanks for the opportunity!
This would be the last piece of the puzzle in making my backups complete. Onsite backups? Check. Offsite backups? Not so much.
I’ve been looking for a good online backup solution and this looks great!
I would love to have a cloud backup solution for my music compositions and scores as well as other data. I can’t imagine losing all my data and backups in event that on site backups fail, Mozy seems like a very good low cost solution.
i need a online backup solution!
Always nice to have backup, and mozy would be great! Hope I’ll get lucky :)
This would be a, no, *the*, missing piece in my backup routine.
I would like to win because I plan on destroying every personal computer in existence, and well, I need a place to stash my pron. paulklemstine@yahoo.com
I would love to win. I have the free version and its not enough. I just dont want to pay for the full. I would like to have it as a failsafe. Hope I win.
I hope this doesnt effect my chances but I dont when i try to connect with my facebook theres an error on facebook that reads the following.

I’ve been using Mozy for a couple of years with great success. My son just got accepted to college and received a brand new 250 GB netbook as a graduation gift. A free subscription to Mozy would be greatly appreciated gift!
It would be mean to have a back up that lets me set it for 4am (when I get off peak bandwidth) so I can get some sleep. I have 3 small kids that keep me busy and having this subscription would allow me to be a better parent! *bounce*
sweet :)
I guess the reason I want to win is simple: I’ve had several computer crashes and while I had client files backed up I ended up losing alot of valuable data. I’ve not found any other suitable solution to date.
Why do I want to win? Simply this, computer crash ARGGGGGGGGG. I am starting myown home business and backups would be great especially since I have an older computer that will most likely crash on me in the future. hubby says no new computer since there is nothing wrong with this one.
100th person? Is it me??? :p

I’ve lost data too many times to count, always relying on external hard drives and incremental DVD backups. I’d love to have an extra layer of protection with an online solution!
Thanks for heads up! The Facebook Connect should be working fine now.

I subscribed to carbonite for two years and when I finally needed to restore my files..I lost everything from the past computer, had to begin a new backup minus my old files. It looks like mozy has a more user friendly interface for both backup and restoring files.
I reject all the requests to renew carbonite…I’d love to win the mozy to compare..and continue subsciption after free year is up. I felt cheated by carbonite, even though they said it should not have been lost.

I love it.
Mozy software rocks……
I love it.
Mozy software rocks……
‘Cause I could use it to protect my ample iTunes library.
I’ve lost data in the past due to hard disk failure and since I’m sort of paranoid also having the backups be off-site would bring some peace of mind.
Winning would allow me to back up all my valued files, rather than just the 2GB I get with free back up options.
I’d like a way that isn’t too expensive (or free) to backup my data for school and general life online.
People always rely on me for information on the latest great tech stuff. Mozy is one of them. Everyone needs to backup their stuff, but never has the time to do it. This would do a lot for me to know the ins and outs of the package, and recommend it to people all over the planet!

It will be useful as I have never used an online backup before
I’ve been using the free version for about a year now, and the peace of mind it brings is great. I’ve got all my university work stored on it, and I love to not have to worry about important documents disappearing when my PC dies (something that’s happened more than once!). And if I don’t win, I’ll certainly buy it when I graduate and start earning. Thanks to makeuseof for introducing me to it!
I’d love to win this, as I do not currently have a good backup solution, and MozyHome looks to be a great one!
I have five kids and shoot a lot of photos of them. You can never have too many backups!
Are you KIDDING?? =)
I’d like to win, because Mozy is the slickest, safest way to backup ALL my stuff!
Are you KIDDING?? =)

It would be great to have a complete backup of everything … just in case!
I would love to try this out so I could let my friends know about it….
I’m a current customer but it would be great to have a year paid for. After an unrecoverable hard drive failure and data loss, I learned my lesson. I can now rest assured that if catastrophe strikes again, my data is safe.
I need a backup fast – my four year old computer is starting to creak, groan, and complain.
DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!!
It would be great to win anything or for that matter get it for FREE but don’t believe the hype.
I was a fan of Mozy until my computer crashed. You will become a disbeliever in Mozy once you need to restore your files. I have been a Mozy customer since 2007 paying for two computers to be backed up. Just this past month, Mozy was supposed to be the “savior” to help me restore my files but that did not happen.
The restore process takes FOREVER and if you don’t want to do it on the web, you can purchase DVD’s but it will cost $$$$$. I’ve got thousands of pictures and music files that are very important to me and it’s not going to be easy and quick to get them restored to your new computer.
Believe me! I was SO grateful that I had Mozy backup my hard drive but it was a nightmare to restore the files. There are other ways to backup your files and I learned it the hard way…I paid full price for 3 years and when I needed to restore my files, they try to make money off of me.
Sure if you win, definitely take advantage of the service and backup your hard drive but after the subscription ends, use other methods to back up your files.
DON’T LET MOZY RIP YOU OFF!
I really need a good backup service considering my wife is in the process of converting out DVD collection to digital format to use with Windows Media Center. We have around 300 and she is averaging 3 per day, if that ever gets wiped its not getting done again, which is why we need a backup service.
I have several computers that my family uses. All of us store our files on a central hard drive. We often have a working copy on our local machines, but the central location is not backed up on a regular basis. I copy the files to a second hard disk from time to time and store the spare drive, but we would be in a real hurt if the main drive would fail. I know this is a time bomb waiting to go off. PLEASE GIVE US THE SOFTWARE SUBSCRIPTIONS. I recently lost my job (economy) and have gone back to college full time again so money is extremely tight.
I’d like to win because losing all the pictures of my niece and nephew in the event of a fire or other disaster would be tragic.

Mozy would really help ensure that my home/business data, which I’m notoriously bad about backing up every day, would be safe and secure. And I could breathe easier! So, it’d make me a really happy guy to win!
Ready to Mozy on down.
Would be curious to try out this system… Looks comprehensive & easy to use…
I really do need to put a backup strategy in place for my home. I work in IT and with many clients for whom a backup strategy is paramount. It’s not like it’s hard to set up, after all!
