5 Annual Subscriptions for MozyHome Up For Grabs [MakeUseOf Giveaway]

Mozy is an incredibly smart, highly secure, set-it-and-forget-it backup solution that will not disappoint you. There are no restrictions — just about anything on your computer can be set to be backed up to Mozy’s servers. And you’ll be glad that you did.

This week, we’ll be giving away 5 one-year subscriptions for MozyHome worth, well it’s invaluable — that’s peace of mind for an entire year. How do you win one?

Click to find out.

First, let’s take a quick look at Mozy and see what it’s all about. Mozy allows you to back up any folder on your computer and select whether you want backups to run at specific times or when your computer is idle for the number of minutes that you choose. Files are backed up securely as they are “encrypted locally with military-grade encryption prior to transfer via a 128-bit SSL connection” so that means they’re backed up with the same technology used by online banking. Retrieving your backed-up files is also a breeze as there are five different ways for you to restore them.

Prepping

Mozy makes it easy to back up your data. Sign up for an account (free accounts come with 2GB of online storage space) and download the desktop client, which supports Windows and Mac. You can select the folders that you wish to backup. Mozy groups related folders in Backup Sets so you can, say, backup all your irreplaceable photos (if you have images on your Desktop that you want to save in addition to those in your Pictures folder) in the Photos and Images folder.

You can also edit the Backup Sets so for instance, the Word Processing Documents backup set/folder includes or excludes files depending on file type, size, date of creation, etc.

Of course, if you would like to select specific folders with content that doesn’t fall in these categories, you can always check those folders on the next tab, File System.

Backing up

Mozy lets you choose when and how to back up so you can sit back and relax. You can configure Mozy to run at specific times or when your computer is idle.

You can also choose whether you prefer your computer to be relatively unintemrrupted while the backup process is running (Faster Computer) which means your backup will take longer or whether you want Quicker Backups. Either way, the entire process will be quick because Mozy’s incremental backup system is smart enough to automatically detect and back up only new and/or changed files.

Restoring your backups

Mozy lets you retrieve your backed-up files in several convenient ways. You can right-click on backed-up files in Windows Explorer to restore them to previous versions.

Alternatively, you can go to the Mozy virtual drive and restore from there.

The desktop client also has a Restore section in case you already have it open.

You can also head to the website to retrieve your files (select the version from up to 30 days in the past) or place an order for a CD of your Mozy-backed-up files.

Mozy works well for people who want to back up their computer data automatically to the cloud and don’t have time or can’t remember to manually backup to CDs or external drives. Mozy allows you to schedule backups only when it’s convenient for you. Also, rest assured that your files are properly secured and safe with Mozy.

I have so much data saved into what amounts to a total of 13 internal and external drives. I’ve got one drive for every kind of data to backup (pictures, documents, photos, wav files, applications, etc) and keeping track of all this is a nightmare! If I could dump it all into one or two 2tb drives, I can back that one machine up and never have to worry about it again!

I’m gonna buy this either way, but saving me the first year cost would go a long way

    thanks makeuseof and mozy!

To win would be an awesome improvement over my current backup method which is hit-or-miss. I manually copy my most important documents and files to two USB thumb drives when I remember, which is not very often because I do not always have the time. Also, the USB drives are not encrypted and if lost…do not even want to go there. MozyHome would lift a HUGE weight off my shoulders! Hoping to win a copy!

I’m a writer, and I have local backups, but I really should have offsite backups. I’m worried that if my house is robbed or there is a fire, tons of my writing will disappear forever. I know I should work on that problem NOW, but that would take time away from writing. :-/

Currently I have an at home backup solution but no redundancy in case of fire, theft, etc. Mozy would provide that next level of protection that everyone should have but is not common place in people’s homes just yet. Here’s to hoping to win a year’s subscription and potentially continuing that service for years to come.

P.S. I tried logging in through FB connect but kept getting the following error so I used my email instead:
    Invalid Argument
The Facebook Connect cross-domain receiver URL (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/mozy-minireview/?fbc_channel=1#fname=_opener&%7B%22t%22%3A3%2C%22h%22%3A%22fbCancelLogin%22%2C%22sid%22%3A%220.600%22%7D) must have the application’s Connect URL (http://blog.kailoon.com) as a prefix. I should win this contest because sometimes I experiment a little too much with my computers and need to restore all my files and so on. With a Mozy account everything would be much simpler and I doesn’t have to live in fear of losing my files because of a defect external backup disc (happened to my several times)

This would be the last piece of the puzzle in making my backups complete. Onsite backups? Check. Offsite backups? Not so much.

I would love to have a cloud backup solution for my music compositions and scores as well as other data. I can’t imagine losing all my data and backups in event that on site backups fail, Mozy seems like a very good low cost solution.

It would be mean to have a back up that lets me set it for 4am (when I get off peak bandwidth) so I can get some sleep. I have 3 small kids that keep me busy and having this subscription would allow me to be a better parent! *bounce*

I guess the reason I want to win is simple: I’ve had several computer crashes and while I had client files backed up I ended up losing alot of valuable data. I’ve not found any other suitable solution to date.

Why do I want to win? Simply this, computer crash ARGGGGGGGGG. I am starting myown home business and backups would be great especially since I have an older computer that will most likely crash on me in the future. hubby says no new computer since there is nothing wrong with this one.

I subscribed to carbonite for two years and when I finally needed to restore my files..I lost everything from the past computer, had to begin a new backup minus my old files. It looks like mozy has a more user friendly interface for both backup and restoring files.
I reject all the requests to renew carbonite…I’d love to win the mozy to compare..and continue subsciption after free year is up. I felt cheated by carbonite, even though they said it should not have been lost.

I’ve been using the free version for about a year now, and the peace of mind it brings is great. I’ve got all my university work stored on it, and I love to not have to worry about important documents disappearing when my PC dies (something that’s happened more than once!). And if I don’t win, I’ll certainly buy it when I graduate and start earning. Thanks to makeuseof for introducing me to it!

    DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!!

It would be great to win anything or for that matter get it for FREE but don’t believe the hype.
I was a fan of Mozy until my computer crashed. You will become a disbeliever in Mozy once you need to restore your files. I have been a Mozy customer since 2007 paying for two computers to be backed up. Just this past month, Mozy was supposed to be the “savior” to help me restore my files but that did not happen.

The restore process takes FOREVER and if you don’t want to do it on the web, you can purchase DVD’s but it will cost $$$$$. I’ve got thousands of pictures and music files that are very important to me and it’s not going to be easy and quick to get them restored to your new computer.

Believe me! I was SO grateful that I had Mozy backup my hard drive but it was a nightmare to restore the files. There are other ways to backup your files and I learned it the hard way…I paid full price for 3 years and when I needed to restore my files, they try to make money off of me.

Sure if you win, definitely take advantage of the service and backup your hard drive but after the subscription ends, use other methods to back up your files.

DON’T LET MOZY RIP YOU OFF!

I really need a good backup service considering my wife is in the process of converting out DVD collection to digital format to use with Windows Media Center. We have around 300 and she is averaging 3 per day, if that ever gets wiped its not getting done again, which is why we need a backup service.

I have several computers that my family uses. All of us store our files on a central hard drive. We often have a working copy on our local machines, but the central location is not backed up on a regular basis. I copy the files to a second hard disk from time to time and store the spare drive, but we would be in a real hurt if the main drive would fail. I know this is a time bomb waiting to go off. PLEASE GIVE US THE SOFTWARE SUBSCRIPTIONS. I recently lost my job (economy) and have gone back to college full time again so money is extremely tight.
