Andrew,

Well, I was comparing it to using regular batteries, and so it is better for the planet in that case. There are a lot of innovative consumer products which are better for the planet in the sense that they're greener than conventional methods but they're just not quite there yet (case in point: induction charging). Does that mean that we should never use them now?

I admit that I misunderstood your point about using electricity to produce the product. Somehow, I only read the part about powering it and your assumption that coal would be used to generate electricity in households. So what if I'm using solar energy? I'm already doing my part by generating my own electricity. Can't I choose what to do with it? Here's another argument: solar panels are not 100% efficient -- so does that mean that you're against producing them too?

What is your argument here, exactly? Are you against using electricity to make this product or are you against induction charging? If it's the former, then let's look at it in perspective: it's a mouse charger -- a product which is aimed to make life easier, not some kind of weapon or even an automobile, which will continue to contribute to the green house effect even after it has left the factory.

If you are indeed against induction charging for its "inefficiency", then that's your prerogative. You can choose not to use it but you can't prevent others from doing so.

You may also want to do a bit of reading up about batteries, trickle charging and the amount of energy used by the induction charging pad before you respond, and try to take things into perspective.

Jackson,
I was not comparing it with regualar batteries, I was saying that the method of charging the batteries was inefficient and not good for the planet.
Yes I did assume that coal would be used to generate the electricity because China is mainly using and has been bring online 70 coal power plants per year since 2005.This is made in China is it not? And you would count the manufacture of it as the most use of electricity? In the UK the residential fuel mix is about 30% Coal and 52 % Natural Gas. Are you saying it is better to burn Natural Gas than coal to run this mouse and that makes the Planet Greener? As that was your Headline in the Article that I objected to , also your subsequent criticism of my assumption of coal being used to make and or power this.?

You are correct about running Li-ion batteries down to zero charge before recharging them is a bad idea. However I was quoting from Mobee's site about the life length of the charge, rather than suggesting you do it.If you have a device that can run for 5-6 days or in your case 3-4 days it is not neccessary to have induction charging, it is a gimmick. You look at induction charging for things like industrial vehicles on a track that cannot be moved or buses in London. Areas where it makess sense to recharge the item when it stands still and can't be taken out of service to be recharged. It is perfectly feasible to recharge this mouse by plugging it in.
Going back to your quote "anyone who knows something about Li-ion batteries" "will tell you that once the max recharge cycles, the ability to store a charge is significantly diminished " Well I don't seem to have those cool type friends but I can read things on the Internet and perhaps you should prior to making snotty remarks. Read

http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries
in which it will tell you that a greater danger to Li ion batteries is charging them to the MAX and then exposing them to heat. WHERE would you do this ? Sitting on top of an Induction coil of a charger like the Mobee that would charge the item and while doing so because of its inherent ineffiency be making heat from the waste energy.
I may not have cool friends but I don't overpay for gimmicks that are going to harm the planet by using more electricity than needed, to accomplish the same thing, and will actually harm my batteries.
And again Jackson I did not say anything about regular batteries.

You don't actually need to remove the batteries to charge them. Just place the entire mouse on top of the charging pad and it'll do its work.

The whole argument about wasting electricity is moot. Plug it into your Mac and it draws whatever power it can through USB. Power consumption increases so slightly, it's negligible. We're talking about 2 AA batteries, for goodness' sake!
