Only seven short days after Sony’s next generation PlayStation 4 hit the market, Microsoft released its head-to-head rival called the Xbox One. The console wars are officially raging, and we’ve had sufficient time with both of them. That begs the question: how does the Xbox One compare? While we are not making a direct comparison – as we want to give Microsoft’s console the individual attention it deserves – it’s impossible not to draw parallels between the two.

Best of all, we are giving away an Xbox One and a copy of Forza Motorsport 5 to one lucky winner. Would you like to take home Microsoft’s latest video game console without spending a dime? Of course, you would! So, keep reading to the bottom to find out how to enter and take home your very own Xbox One.

This Xbox One was purchased with our own cash. Therefore, this is probably one of the most honest and unbiased reviews you will find.

Introducing the Xbox One

Microsoft’s Xbox One has had a rocky road to start with. Right out of the gate, the company had some messaging issues with users, and it actually changed some of its core vision for the console itself. In spite of the changes, it’s facing some heavy competition from the PlayStation 4 and its $400 price tag compared to the Xbox One’s $500. We reviewed the PS4 quite favorably Sony PlayStation 4 Review And Giveaway Sony PlayStation 4 Review And Giveaway Ladies and gentlemen, the next generation of video game consoles is here, with the Sony PlayStation 4! Read More , so Microsoft has a difficult act to follow. The Wii U sits below both at $300, but one could argue that Nintendo’s console exists in a completely different space.

The reason the Xbox One is dearer than Sony’s offering is the inclusion of the Kinect sensor, which comes bundled in every single console sold. Not only does that force their customers to pay an extra $100, but it also begs the question: does the Kinect add enough to the console experience to justify the extra cost? Or is Microsoft pricing itself out of the market with a device that gamers don’t actually want included with their system at all?

Specifications

Many players won’t even think twice about the actual numbers and hardware tucked within the console. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t important. Manufactures have cared about this since back in the day when Sega was screaming about its “Blast Processing” on the Genesis. As most avid gamers would know, the specifications of the Xbox One are slightly inferior to the PlayStation 4, but what exactly are those numbers?

  • Processor: The Xbox One features a 8 Core AMD custom CPU. It’s just about on par with the processor offered in the PS4.
  • Memory: 8 gigabytes of GDDR3 RAM is included, which is where the Xbox One really loses to the PS4’s GDDR5 RAM.
  • HDD: 500 gigabyte hard drive that is not user-upgradeable. However, Microsoft says that support for external USB HDDs is coming soon.
  • GPU: For graphics, the Xbox One has a peak throughput of 1.23 TFLOPS on its AMD graphics card.
  • AV output: The Xbox One includes HDMI out, HDMI in.
  • Optical Drive: The drive can handle both Blu-ray and DVD.
  • Communication: For connectivity, there is ethernet and 802.11 a/b/g/n dual-band Wi-Fi on 2.4 and 5 GHz. It also features USB 3.0.

First Impressions

The box for the Xbox One looks a lot more like what you would expect from a video game console. It’s big and thick, which makes sense, as not only is it housing the console itself, but it’s also home to the Kinect, which is not exactly a small device on its own.

Once you crack the box open, you are greeted by a pretty massive console, especially when compared to the PS4. There is also the Kinect, an HDMI cable, the Xbox One controller, 2 AA batteries for the controller, a headset, and all of the important documentation.

xbox one review

As a person who feels like the Xbox 360 has the single best controller ever made for a video game console, the first thing I did was pick up the Xbox One’s offering. I was immediately underwhelmed, as the sticks were loose compared to the 360 and PS4, and the bumpers felt very weird. We’ll dig into the controller later, but my first impressions of it were not overly positive.

Design

I’ve seen many people drawing comparisons between the look of the Xbox One and that of an old school VCR. Sadly, those comparisons are not too far off, as it is a big, hulking device with completely square lines and not a lot of style. That being said, some have called it ugly, and I must say I disagree. While it has a very basic, industrial look, once it’s set on my entertainment center, I actually quite liked it. Obviously, this is a matter of personal taste, and you may or may not like the design.

xbox one console review

In all, the Xbox One is 13.1 inches wide, 10.8 inches deep, and 3.1 inches tall. While only a little over an inch wider than the PS4, it feels quite a bit bigger, and the extra inch in height adds to the heft a great deal. The Kinect sensor is 9.8 inches wide, 2.6 inches deep and 2.63 inches tall. It’s a little bigger than the last Kinect, but the size difference is not enough to be a major worry.

It’s what’s inside the console that matters most to gamers. It’s about how well the console functions in daily use and how it performs. That’s what we are going to get to next.

User Interface

If you’ve ever used an Xbox 360 or Windows 8, many aspects of the Xbox One’s interface will be very familiar to you. Everything is divided into a bunch of squares of varying size on the main screen. Front and center is recent activity, games in the disc drive and social items. Moving to the left will display your pins, which are apps and games you have elected to lock to the home screen. Moving to the right is the store, where you can download games, apps, music, and videos. The home screen is sensible, and for the most part, it’s easy enough to navigate with a controller, but it can get a little confusing with the recent activity always changing.

Some options are a little harder to find on the Xbox One when navigating with a controller. This is because Microsoft clearly intends for you to navigate everything with voice commands through its Kinect sensor. However, the options are there for traditional navigation, you just have to learn where everything is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvneLPT8qj4

Aside from navigating the system, Microsoft has tucked a bunch of really cool features into it. The most notable of which is multitasking, which allows users to snap certain apps to the side of the screen while playing a game. This is accessed by a button on the main screen, or by saying “Xbox, snap so and so app.” It’s a really cool feature, but it has some flaws. The biggest of which is the way it handles sound. If, for example, you have Live TV snapped and a game playing on the main portion of the screen, the Xbox will attempt to shift the sound back and forth when it thinks it’s optimal to do so. However, it’s not very good at this, and it makes watching a video while playing a game far less enjoyable that it should. This is something that could easily be fixed by allowing users to mute one of the two as needed, but as it stands, it’s a major drawback to one of the coolest features of the console.

Another problem with the Xbox One’s operating system is that it offers no way for users to manage storage. With games overs 40 GB in some cases, a 500 GB hard drive is going to fill up really quickly. Instead of allowing users to manually track how their disk space is being used, the Xbox One will automatically delete rarely played games. It sounds cool in theory, but personally, I prefer to keep track of my storage manually, and determine which games to delete on my own. You can select a game and uninstall it, but without knowing how close you are to reaching the drive’s capacity, it’s tough to know when you should do this.

Overall, I actually really like the Xbox One’s interface in spite of its flaws. Most of the problems it has can be patched in future system updates. I just find it slightly easier to navigate than the PS4’s, and it has more robust features that are not offered on the Sony console. Factor in the Kinect, which we will get to soon, and you have a pretty solid system that navigates rather smoothly.

Kinect

When the Kinect works, it’s a downright joyous and futuristic experience. Walking into the room and saying “Xbox on” and seeing my console and TV turn on at the same time makes me feel like I am in an episode of Star Trek. Of course, the key phrase there is, “when it works.” Most of the time, I can get the Kinect to do what I want on the first or second attempt, but there were several times where it just didn’t feel like cooperating, and those times can be frustrating.

In spite that, I still find the Kinext to be the best way to navigate the console in most situations. Saying “Xbox, go to Forza Motorsport 5” for example, is quick, and it works from anywhere within the Xbox One’s OS. You can also use voice commands for things like snapping an app, and watching TV; pretty much anything you can think of.

xbox one console review

The problem with Kinect is that it does not understand natural language, so if you go into it expecting Siri-like functionality, you will be disappointed. Instead, you will have to learn the specific commands that it understands. For example, “Xbox, on” turns the console on, but “Xbox, off” does not turn it off. Instead, you need to say “Xbox, turn off.” Remember, I cited “Xbox, go to Forza Motorsport 5” as a command? You need to say it exactly like this. So you can’t say something like “Xbox, go to Forza,” or “Xbox, play Forza.” You have to say “Xbox, go to” and the full name of the game, which will take a little getting used to.

While you do need to memorize the commands, I purposely didn’t bother looking up any of the guides Microsoft has for using the Kinect. Instead, I opted to figure it out on my own, and all of the commands make sense. Once you get a feel for the syntax, it’s all very logical. I assume the reason Microsoft opted for such specific commands is so users don’t accidentally say something in a conversation that makes the Xbox One do something.

microsoft xbox one review

The motion commands with the Kinect are better off ignored. It’s better than the original Kinect, but I still found that I had to fight with it way too much for it to be useful. During my review, I found that a mix of voice control and using the controller was optimal, and once you find the right mix yourself, it’s actually a pretty solid experience that works most of the time. I was hoping for a 100 percent success rate, but I would say it’s definitely good enough where I never found myself ignoring the voice commands, and I use it on a daily basis with the console.

Media Player and Live TV

In Microsoft’s mind, gaming is only one small aspect of the Xbox One’s functionality. At the press conference when Microsoft first announced the console, they focused on the live television integration than on anything else. It’s a risky move, as many would argue that live television is a dying medium, with services like Hulu Plus and Netflix taking over. All of that said, the live TV integration with the Xbox One is awesome.

To use the TV features, you simply plug your cable into the HDMI in port on the back of the Xbox One, and click on the TV button or use the “Watch TV” voice command. From there, the Xbox One will run through a setup process where it will ask you for your location and provider so it can get the One Guide up and running with the information on what’s on. The whole process takes just a couple of minutes, and then you will be watching TV as you would with your cable box, but on a much better interface than most cable companies can possibly deliver.

In addition to being a camera and microphone, the Kinect also features an IR blaster, which is how it is able to change the channel on your cable box, turn on the TV, and adjust the volume of your audio receiver. When it’s all put together, it really feels magical. Going through the process of turning it on by saying “Watch TV” and telling your Xbox One to “Watch AMC” to show the latest episode of The Walking Dead is just an incredible experience. Very rarely did I have a problem with the Xbox One not tuning to the correct channel. And since the Xbox One was released, I have not touched my cable box remote once, which is the best praise I can offer.

The One Guide is a cool feature because not only does it show you what’s coming up on live TV, but it can also stream TV shows and movies on other services like Hulu Plus and Amazon Instant. When Microsoft talked about the Xbox One putting all of your media in one place, they really meant it; the execution, although not perfect, is pretty damn good, and it can only get better as time goes on.

One major problem with the Xbox One’s cable integration is the inability to access recorded shows on a DVR. This means you will need to pick up your cable remote to get access to the shows you recorded. This is a serious annoyance, as many people consume much of their TV after it airs live, and hopefully, it is something that Microsoft can nail down with a system update in the future.

Speaking of other services, they work as advertised. Netflix looks great; nothing has really changed from the last console generation in terms of these apps, but the aforementioned One Guide does a great job of making them feel like an integrated part of the OS and not just a separate app.

As far as media players go, the Xbox One is the best I have used. You can control it with your voice, hand gestures (which are abysmal), and the controller, which offers a level of flexibility that you cannot get on any other media player. Add in the ability to watch live TV, and you have an extremely robust way to consume entertainment content.

Controller

So we’ve established that the Xbox One is an awesome media player with a cool way of navigating the operating system, but it’s a video game system, and it needs to play games well in order for any of that other stuff to really matter. It starts with the controller, and sadly, the Xbox One controller is just not as good as the PlayStation 4’s. And neither are as good as the Xbox 360’s, which is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of video game controller design.

microsoft xbox one review

There are two things I don’t like about the Xbox One’s controller. The first is the sticks, which have been, inexplicably loosened. This makes it feel like you have less control over what you are playing. This is a baffling move, as the reason the 360’s controller was so beloved was largely due to the quality of the sticks. Sony got the message, and tightened up the sticks a great deal on the PS4.

The other problem with the Xbox One controller is bumpers, which feel awkward to press when switching from the trigger to them. There is a weird way you can hold the controller without moving between the two buttons, which is supposed to be more ergonomic. However, the way the 360’s controller worked was perfect, and after thousands of hours played on it, I’ve never found myself having hand issues from it. Why change something that was so good? It just seems like a very poor decision on Microsoft’s part, and hopefully, they will release a modified version of the controller down the line.

xbox one gaming console review

For the two main problems with the controller, there are also two things I love. First, we have the d-pad, which has been completely reworked from the 360, and is now one of the better ones out there. It features a satisfying click when pressed, and it just feels good. It’s weird that Microsoft failed at making the d-pad last time around, since it’s a design that has been around since the 80s. But it’s fixed now, so for the few games that make hardcore use of the d-pad, life is good.

The other big change to the Xbox One controller is the separate vibrating triggers. It just might be the coolest new feature added to a controller in a long time. Playing Forza and feeling it vibrate separately for the gas pedal and brake is amazing. The subtle vibration when you accelerate or brake too hard is just awesome, and it adds a great deal to the immersion.

xbox one gaming console review

So we have some pros and cons here, but in the end, while Microsoft improved the d-pad and added some awesome rumble triggers, it failed miserably at two of the most important parts of the controller: the sticks and bumpers. Unfortunately, a couple of positive changes don’t outweigh the failure of the two core functions. It’s still a completely usable controller, and it’s probably still the third best controller I’ve used. Then again, it’s hard to follow a device that was close to perfection. Too bad you can’t just use an Xbox 360 controller with the Xbox One.

Playing Games On The Xbox One

Aside from the controller issues, playing games on the Xbox One is a fantastic experience. Yes, the games look a little better on the PS4, but it’s the type of difference that you will not notice until you are looking at the two devices side-by-side. When you boot up Forza, Assassin’s Creed IV, or any other Xbox One game and look at it, you can’t help but think, “This looks beautiful.” Games look better than on last generation machines, and they rival higher-end PCs for graphical fidelity.

The launch lineup is not great on the Xbox One, but with exclusives like Killer Instinct, Forza Motorsport 5, and Dead Rising 3, I do think it slightly edges out the PS4. However, it’s way too soon to say which console will feature better games going down the road, but there’s one game that many gamers have in their sights, an Xbox and PC exclusive called Titanfall.

Playing games on the Xbox One is actually made better by the other features offered by the console. Being able to watch a sporting even on TV or your favorite show while playing a video game is a really cool experience; one that no other console can match. Using the Kinect makes jumping in and playing quick and painless. Many gamers were afraid the extra features would detract from the experience of actually playing games, but it’s most certainly the opposite.

The load times on the Xbox One felt very long. In most games, it’s one long initial load, and then everything is seamless, but that first load felt longer than any other console. In Forza, for example, the time to move from race to race felt excessive, and it’s something that could become more of a problem later as games push the hardware to its limit.

Games like Forza and Ryse feature something scary that could be a problem going forward: a huge focus on micro-transactions. Sometimes while playing Forza, it felt more like I was playing Real Racing on iOS, and that’s unsettling. PS4 games are not focused on this nearly as much, and if holding back progression and content from a $60 game in favor of piecing it out becomes a trend on the Xbox One, that could be turnoff for gamers, and one that could push them away from the console completely.

The PS4 is a better console from a gameplay perspective. The issues with the Xbox One controller and the slight edge the PS4 has in terms of performance makes the reality Microsoft is facing somewhat dark. Of course, Microsoft was staring down a stronger console last generation and it did just fine, so it will be interesting to see how this console shakes out as far as just the game go.

Online Services

The Xbox 360 was, in the hearts and minds of most gamers, the best online experience — in spite of the fact that you had to pay to access the online functions. That hasn’t changed with this generation, but the difference is that Sony is now forcing gamers to pay for PlayStation Plus in order to get access to online multiplayer functionality. With Microsoft, services like Netflix are still locked behind a Gold subscription, but realistically, you’d be crazy to spend $500 on this console without having a Gold account, as you are missing out on the entire scope of what it has to offer.

Sadly, the online experience, at least as far as gaming is concerned, has actually taken a step back on the Xbox One. Where it used to be really easy to join a friend’s session in progress on the 360, the new system features a confusing and complicated party system that makes joining games with friends feel like a headache. Once in a game, everything works as expected, but like the controller, Microsoft seems to have taken a step backwards.

xbox one review

A notable omission from the Xbox One’s feature set is ability to stream to Twitch. It’s coming, but not having it at launch has given Sony a serious leg up. You can watch Twitch streams with the Twitch app, but that’s the extent of the experience on the console for now.

Thankfully, the Xbox One does have a Game DVR, which can be activated through its icon or by saying “Xbox, record that.” From there, you can save the last five minutes of video, and you can use the Upload Studio app to edit it, add a voice over, and video of you by the Kinect camera. It all works very well, and Microsoft lets you upload the videos to SkyDrive, where you can then put them on PC and upload them to any other service – a notable advantage over Sony as the PS4 limits you to sharing on Facebook.

xbox one review

Flaws aside, the Xbox One is a solid device for everything involving the Internet. It has a decent web browser, access to all kinds of video streaming apps, and tons of people playing multiplayer games, even though the console has just entered the market. The party system will almost certainly be fixed in upcoming system updates, and there is no reason to think that the Xbox One will not be the online powerhouse the 360 was. Maybe it will be even better.

Wrapping Up

In the end, the Xbox One is a great video game console. Like any launch system, it has some flaws, but what it really has – more than any console that has come before it – is potential. Now that I’ve had plenty of time with the console, I can see Microsoft’s vision. The company clearly has lofty goals for it, and it appears to be traveling down the right path to make them a reality.

For the time being, in spite of the problems, I really like the Xbox One. It’s not perfect, but it’s a great game playing machine that offers a ton of extras that are actually really fantastic.

MakeUseOf recommends: Buy the Xbox One if you want a video game console that can also be your main entertainment hub. If games are all you care about, a PS4 seems to be the better choice right now.

Nah. Not enough of a "gamer" anyway - could never afford to "get into" the "console" systems, & never big enough into "games" when I *was* "into" games ... The whole "upgrade cycle" turned me off even way back then.

I think that the Xbox one has a chance at becoming great and becoming a key piece in home entertainment, as long as microsoft continues to refine it through updates.

  65. Jennifer Jordan
    January 2, 2014 at 5:52 pm

Why yes I do! We currently have PlayStation 3 and WII...but games and graphics look interesting for the X Box One.

    • Alex
      January 2, 2014 at 4:38 pm

my friends that have it say some of the integration into the living room is annoying, like asking for BBC and getting BET, so if it is like that, then it will be the same as my xbox 360 and strictly a gaming device....

  76. Karen
    January 2, 2014 at 3:45 pm

My son and grandson would love if I won one of these

  77. Mike McAteer
    January 2, 2014 at 3:43 pm

I don't think it would, to be honest. Although it does have some nice features, I have a GoogleTV device that provides many of the "Gold Required" services from Xbox that I would use for my media instead (Netflix, home streaming, etc). The Xbox has always been a gaming device first, for me.

  78. Paul Q
    January 2, 2014 at 3:39 pm

I can very easily see the XBox One becoming our media center. We already use our XBox 360 to watch all kinds of things. This can only get better.

  79. Todd Quigley
    January 2, 2014 at 3:35 pm

I already use my Xbox 360 as my home entertainment system, I see the Xbox ONE filling the same role with even more features! :)

  80. Gavin Lewandowski
    January 2, 2014 at 3:35 pm

Yes, I think it will be especially with integrtion with other services, love to see how kinect 2 compares against kinect 1 which requires a huge amount of play space.

  81. Glenn Blair
    January 2, 2014 at 3:32 pm

I believe the Xbox One has already started to become an integral part in living room entertainment - it offers far more than games giving you control of tv, other media (movies and music), exercise and gaming to name but a few.

The voice recognition and motion tracking is remarkable when compared to the Xbox 360 and is a breeze to use.

No home entertainment centre will be complete without 'One'.

    January 2, 2014 at 2:58 pm

I have a feeling if/when we get the Xbox One, I will find it hard to get the family off of it so I can play my games. Where's a distributed gaming/entertainment system when you need one? ;)

  151. Dalsan M
    December 30, 2013 at 7:34 pm

With only having a Wii game system as the main game system in our home, the XBox One would definitely become an integral part of our home entertainment. Using the media extender capabilities, video streaming, and overall home entertainment system that the whole family would enjoy. Also, with my daughter in dance classes, having the Just Dance game series would help her learn more dance moves.

  152. Sophie S
    December 30, 2013 at 7:31 pm

    December 30, 2013 at 5:13 pm

I can see the Xbox One being a big part of my entertainment package should I win one (or buy one once the early adopters have found and suffered any bugs which crop up and get fixed). I use the original Xbox as a media centre in my bedroom and my Xbox 360 as a media player and games rig in my main living room, so it would just enhance what is already being used.

  160. Andrea Baldinazzo
    December 30, 2013 at 5:10 pm

  247. Mike McAteer
    December 27, 2013 at 2:21 pm

I don't think the Xbox one will be integral to my home theater. I already have an Xbox 360, and a GoogleTV box that integrates quite well with my satellite service, The XBone will most likely be used just like any other gaming console for me.

  248. Melis T
    December 27, 2013 at 2:16 pm

It would be a major part of our family's entertainment. We could play games and watch movies together with it.

  257. Michael A
    December 27, 2013 at 1:19 pm

The Xbox One will be more than an integral part of my home entertainment center. It will be the focal point of it. It does so many things in one unit, and has the games I want to play the most. I especially look forward to what Microsoft does with the system over time. As we saw with the Xbox 360, the interface improved and features were added and/or improved as well. The potential the Xbox One has is the main reason it will be the focal point of my home entertainment center.

  258. Adam L
    December 27, 2013 at 1:16 pm

I can see the xbox playing a very important role in my movie room. It'll be the perfect doorstop.

  268. Thomas
    December 26, 2013 at 9:57 pm

Nope, not until it can function as a TV DVR will it even come close to being the one and only device needed in the living room. As it stands now it simply replaces the current dvd/blu-ray player. Everyone still needs 3-4 boxes under their TV.

  272. Trevor
    December 26, 2013 at 5:47 pm

Thinking of all the ways I can use the Xbox One in the home. First off, plugging in my DirecTV to then be able to control my satellite with the voice controls on the Xbox. Never used Kinect before, so I'm intrigued by that possibility. Also ready to connect Amazon Instant video, so that I then have live TV, on demand movies & TV shows, and of course games. Can't wait to play Forza 5, Dead Rising 3, and AC IV.

I think media in the house hold has become big part on most people's lifes . It's much cheaper to stay in then to go out to movies and eating out. so xbox one makes that easier.

I'm not certain, but I think the mcuh improved voice navigation, combined with the ability to work with TV service providers, is extremely cool. I've heard first hand accounts of how smooth they can both be, and it really seems like the sort of thing it'd be hard to step away from.

    Plus--integrated Skype! That's a feature I'm pretty excited about.

  390. Sudhanshu S
    December 21, 2013 at 7:29 pm

Yes it will, once if have the Xbox One, I will take my old dvd-player out of the TV-stand, so there is space for it to put it, and I will connect it with the rest of my home cinema set.

    December 20, 2013 at 1:50 pm

The way Microsoft has advertised the Xbox One, it looks like they've done a decent job of making it a home entertainment device, not just a game console. Integrating live TV, video on demand services, music services and gaming - yeah, it could very well be an integral part of home entertainment systems, and yes, mine ;)

  429. Carol Foltz
    December 20, 2013 at 1:49 pm

I mostly play PC games, but my kids play console games, and we use our Xbox 360 to access Netflix and other TV offerings, so I can see this replacing our Xbox 360.

  434. Ryan
    December 20, 2013 at 1:39 pm

Yes, since I can play many of my console games on it, and get some new ones etc. Definitely have to explore its functions in order to determine this :) I'll also listen to my music collection too.

  435. Debra C
    December 20, 2013 at 1:38 pm

that's funny you ask that...I see it as becoming the ONLY part of my family!! It will have its setbacks as I see my 2 boys AND my husband losing control and playing it all the time. wait a minute...that means more time for me in peace??? NO DRAWBACKS!! YES YES YES!!!

Not really, all I ever do with consoles is play games, but I would love to win it, so I could start playing some of the next gen (or should I say current gen at this point?) games now instead of a couple years from now when I can actually afford to buy one. :(

    December 18, 2013 at 10:46 pm

    X BOX ONE!!!

  489. Gabriel Ortiz
    December 18, 2013 at 10:26 pm

Unfortunately I think PS4 is better in terms of games. Xbox had all these features but they're marketing the gaming aspect. If they market everything the Xbox can do, then they have a chance.

  490. Phil N
    December 18, 2013 at 10:21 pm

If I win one in might be integral, Otherwise I'm all about the PS4 and OnLive.

  491. Aska N
    December 18, 2013 at 10:17 pm

We with my son very fond of playing computer games.

  492. Ron
    December 18, 2013 at 10:09 pm

Yes.. I totally think it would be.

  493. Ian Huey
    December 18, 2013 at 10:02 pm

I don't know if the XBOX One will become an integral part of my home entertainment center, but I'm willing to try! At 499.99, i'll be waiting to win a contest first.

  494. Karla
    December 18, 2013 at 9:39 pm

Yes, with all the features and the interaction with Comcast and the apps I think the XBox is taking a different path than the PS. While the PS seems to have the market cornered on games for the PS4, the XBox may be aiming at a higher clientele perhaps.

  495. Hao W
    December 18, 2013 at 9:25 pm

Yip, it'll be my primary gaming console.

  496. Iko-Eerik Uustalu
    December 18, 2013 at 9:10 pm

I see the xbox one becomeing a intregal part of my home entertainment system

  497. Shyamprasad K A
    December 18, 2013 at 8:56 pm

    Xbox :D

  498. Michael
    December 18, 2013 at 8:53 pm

I think it's extremely likely that the Xbox One would be key to my entertainment center because of it's gaming abilities (naturally), the ability to push music and video from networked PCs to the TV via the Xbox, as well as the HDMI passthrough function to either have a degree of backwards compatibility with my 360 or my desktop PC

  499. Patti
    December 18, 2013 at 8:43 pm

I see my son making it an integral part!

  500. Cheryl G
    December 18, 2013 at 8:27 pm

Absolutely! A great addition to family time

  501. Joseph L

Yes would be a big upgrade for me since I have not owned one of these gadgets

  502. Jay
    December 18, 2013 at 8:05 pm

Xbox does it better than PS4

  503. Chris Dobbs
    December 18, 2013 at 7:56 pm

x box was always the better console, the difference was free online play vs. pay to play. now that they're both the same in that regard, say goodbye to the PlayStation.

  504. Eric B
    December 18, 2013 at 7:48 pm

I doubt it will be a part of my home entertainment center. As far as I know, nearly all of the functionality I'd use would require and xbox live subscription. It is stupid to require and additional fee to use features that you could get free on another platform. Roku and many others are far superior for consuming internet media. If i get an xbox one, it will be only for playing xbox one games. I might hook my 360 up through the one so I can still play my 360 and original xbox games and not use an extra cord.

  505. ryan b
    December 18, 2013 at 7:43 pm

I believe that while the PlayStation offers the advantage over games, the other functionality looks to good to pass up.. Just hope I can find one by Christmas.

  506. Thomas Nord
    December 18, 2013 at 7:10 pm

It might become integral in a few years, but right now it doesn't offer me much of anything I'm already missing.

  507. Katt
    December 18, 2013 at 6:49 pm

I hope so. It looks and sounds great. Can't wait to test drive it.

    December 17, 2013 at 11:47 am

Yes, I do see it. It's a very nice home entertainment box (see what I did there), along with a great gaming console. I think one can have a great time by switching from a blu ray movie to some browsing the internet and then playing a game with his friends. It does a better job considering all 3 then PS4. Thank you for the article.

  609. Rob Fitzgerald
    December 16, 2013 at 10:49 pm

I wouldn't say it would become an integral part of home entertainment center in the way that Microsoft intends (using Kinect and the HDMI in to control other devices) but it would certainly be great for the few console games that I would like to play

  616. Oliver Crete

Actually, yes, I do. I don't have cable or another service -all my media is via Netflix, other streaming services, or via a media server I built. Currently, all that comes through an Xbox 360 - I'd love to be doing it through an Xbox One instead.

    December 16, 2013 at 6:03 pm

Of course, since Microsoft built the Xbox One with multiscreen. First, the home screen shows the last window that opened the player, including when playing games or watching movies. Will appear as icons and options Explorer, TV, games, and applications. On the left side of the screen there is a digital pinboard for favorite games where players enter, movies, applications, or TV shows. While on the right side, the player can set the apps, music, and movies. Display on the home screen and the other two screens were made as Windows 8.

  642. bioadam
    December 16, 2013 at 4:23 pm

Here's the deal with the Xbox One right now: I would still need all my old A/V equipment. Keeping the DVR is a no-brainer. When I'm not paying for Xbox Live, I will also need my old Blu-Ray player for Netflix, Hulu, etc. For the time being, there is no way I could dump the old Xbox 360; the Xbox One cannot play or does not have the games my family loves like Minecraft and Kinect Party (and games I love like Halo as well as unplayed Xbox 360 games I've picked up for cheap this year.)

  643. Christopher Clark
    December 16, 2013 at 4:16 pm

I currently own no gaming consoles so winning an Xbox One would provide a much needed and much desired gaming and entertainment solution for my living room. Plus I might finally get some use out of my 42 inch flat screen!

    December 16, 2013 at 3:28 pm

The xbox definitely has potential to be a entertainment powerhouse. My friend has one and I love the seamless transitions between apps like netflix amd the games themselves. I dont know how many times my wife has walked in with lunch and im playing xb360. The transion time between games and media is so long I often give up and just eat (which angers my wife).

  650. Alex B
    December 16, 2013 at 3:21 pm

The Xbox forces its way into the living room to be the center of attention. People don't like change. it won't fair well if they don't cut the monthly fee to use the functions

  659. Matt Brandes

    December 16, 2013 at 1:42 pm

i think game consoles trying to be the centre of your home entertainment is a bit of a push, they should stick to high quality games and the occasional bit of 'on demand' tv. i don't think many people are actually going to wire all of their stuff through their xbox.

  675. Alexandru M.
    December 16, 2013 at 1:37 pm

I would consider buying it if, and only if, i'd want something more than just play video games. But as long as PCs are still better when it comes to gaming, I guess from an entertaining stand point Xbox One does the trick and delivers. It's a great console, nevertheless and awesome article!

  724. Damian
    December 15, 2013 at 4:06 pm

Unfortunately, I really feel MS dropped the ball if they want this system to become the "hub" of peoples entertainment systems. As an Internet content delivery system, it's perfectly fine, as was the Xbox 360, but the way they have implemented the broadcast TV solution is terribly dated and experience will vary from cable, to satellite. OTA service is not even an option, and is one I would probably use if it was.
I have no intention of juggling remote controls, dealing with multiple video overlays (xbox, and cable box), and finicky IR repeaters in order to jimmy this thing into my home entertainment system. If I get one, it will be hooked up just like my 360 is now, as a pure gaming system, and not the man behind the entertainment curtain.

  725. Brit McKay
    December 15, 2013 at 3:51 pm

  733. Joses L
    December 15, 2013 at 12:18 pm

Nah, it's too bad that even the Xbox One is currently to expensive to me, although that would of course change if I win this One(pun intended) :D.

  734. Brenda P

  744. Johnna R
    December 15, 2013 at 6:45 am

I'm not really sure if I see Xbox One becoming an integral part of my entertainment or not. I like the idea of some of the things you can do on Xbox One, but it's almost as though it's overkill, taking away from everyone being able to do things for themselves.

  745. Anup Jonathan
    December 15, 2013 at 5:45 am

Yes I do. With its cool features like voice commands and snap on/off features, I'm pretty sure this device is gonna be the nerve center of my home entertainment eco-system!

  762. Xenios K

  769. D
    December 14, 2013 at 10:39 pm

Maybe. It doesn't blow me away but if I get one for free...

  770. Tom W
    December 14, 2013 at 10:30 pm

I live in the UK, and I just have standard freeview (no Sky, no streaming services, etc.) so I doubt the Xbox One could really be my central media device - especially since most of the TV I watch is recorded onto a DVR.

Even if this wasn't the case, it most likely wouldn't be in my living room because the TV there is used by other people watching television and that cuts into the available time I would have to use the Xbox for it's primary purpose - gaming.

  771. Karim T
    December 14, 2013 at 10:22 pm

Xbox One editing capabilities are swaying me on this ONE.

Well maybe. It has many usefulness besides playing games so I think my whole family would love it.

  801. Roberto Rother
    December 14, 2013 at 5:22 pm

Yes, I see it being used for games, surfing the web, etc.

    December 14, 2013 at 5:21 pm

I don't see it being integral since I don't have HDMI on my surround system and we have DirecTV HD DVR as our primary video/audio source. It would be an addition as another entertainment source, but not integral (at least not yet, depending on what MS updates)

For sure, need to get one to get out of the stoneage (:

I see more and more people having these machines even if they aren't gamers just to get Netflix and other computer TV sites on their TVs. So I think yes to out do cable costs over the year it would be better to have the Xbox and Netflix.

I loved how much a part of my overall media experience my PS3 was. Sadly, the ps4 has done away with some of my favorite features. This time around, it looks like the Xbox One has surpassed Sony in this regard. Love the X1's media features.

I really just want a gaming machine, that doesn't try to take over the roles of my other machines. And, if we're being brutally honest, I want a machine that can play the next Arkham game and the next Halo game, because that's all I'll be affording based on the prices out there right now.

Because I am not a big gamer I do not see it becoming an integral part of my home entertainment system, though I would play it on weekends.

I can see the Xbox One becoming an integral part of my home entertainment system because of its latest generation gaming, its quality graphics and with its ability to not only play games, but play regular DVDs as well as Blu-ray DVDs. With its internet connectivity it can help me get connected with friends and family through the uses of Skype and its integration with social networking sites. When playing video games online it can help me be part of the game with voice chat with the people I am playing with

I hope I get it, money's tight and this looks really really promising.

I'm an avid pc gamer myself, but i've been hoping to try the console scene for a while. Thought steambox would do it for me, but if I got my hands of a XBone i wouldn't say it's a bad deal!
