Make Use Of Podcast #3: Images, Pando, Maxthon & Evernote

May. 25th, 2008 By Jason Mayoff

Welcome to the Make Use Of podcast #3. This week, I am talking to Shankar Ganesh from India about all kinds of things including how we get images into our blog posts and where we find them, sharing large files, browsers and Evernote.

If you look underneath the show notes on this page, you will see a little media player where you can listen to the podcast right here on the site. Or if you prefer, you can right-click on the “audio MP3″ logo and save the MP3 file to your computer for listening on your MP3 player or iPod.

We now have the podcast in iTunes so don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast if you have an iPod, or in another podcatcher if you have a different MP3 player.

After listening, please submit your comments below on this page or you can also send me an e-mail with a question, comment, criticism or suggestion.

Enjoy!

Nice to ” hear ” Shankar finally :) [ I have been chatting with him since months ]

Overall a good podcast except the echo factor. A lot of times, Jason’s sound seemed to echo.

That was another wonderful podcast, getting better every time. Great job Jason and Shankar!

In reply to your question Shankar…since I’m not just a writer, but also a reader, I think this is a valid answer…I love your lists and your writing style. So, in order to get the best of both, mix list posts with detailed articles, you’re very good at doing both!

Nice to hear Shankar’s podcast here. But why echo?

Only one suggestion: Give more minutes to interviewee to talk in podcast.

I liked the Podcast, too! Since you guys talked about Maxthon again, I am going to download, too. I think Evernote is AWESOME, so thanks for including it!

Shankar, great podcast, nice to finally hear your voice. I second Abhijeet, there were some echo sounds. Let’s wait for Jason, maybe he can clarify what caused it.

Shankar, I noted your suggestions and will talk to Travis about them.

In order to explain the echo, I need to explain how we record the podcast. The other author and I each record our own voices on our own computers while we’re talking. I also record a backup of the Skype call itself. The Skype call audio is pretty low-quality, so I would use it only as an emergency backup. After the podcast is recorded, the person on the other end emails me his MP3 and I stitch the two together using Audacity. I also do a little editing to make things sound better.

Well, I neglected to mention to Shankar that he should have been using headphones and so my voice leaked out of his speakers and into his mic. (It was totally my fault, there’s no way Shankar could have known that would happen.) I only noticed this when he sent me the file later in the day.

I cut out most of the echo on my voice, but left some in at the beginning and end of my parts, so it would sound more natural. Had I not, it would have sounded like we weren’t really talking to each other.

In any case, this should not happen again, because now I’ll remember to give the podcastee better instructions. Sorry, and I hope it didn’t detract too much from the final product.

BTW: If anyone knows how to get high quality Skype calls, please send me an email: podcast@makeuseof.com.

Shankar – I forgot to mention it earlier but in our next poll we are planning to ask readers about list style articles.

P.S. I personally think your lists are great. They are informative, short and always include the best of. So keep them coming.

Hi Jason,

Content of podcast was good again, but seriously the quality of the podcast must not continue to be of this level because you will lose listeners for sure. But luckily you know what the problem is and you can solve it (So this podcast is going to be kick ass if you get decent sound)

Greetings,
Alfred

Firefox has a lot of good extensions. However, it’s clunkcy, slows down with each extension added. Opera is quicker and more W3C compliant.

Thanks for dropping your views, everyone. I think I can continue doing list posts ;)

@Aibek I really recommend keeping Skribit on the sidebar!

@Jason Never mind Jason, I know you’ll do an even better job next time :)
