Like my colleague Matt, I hate shopping for clothes. If there is a Hell on Earth, it’s a clothes store changing room having size after size of clothes being passed through the curtain, and being told by the Other Half to try them on. It brings out the worst in me and I become insufferable. Just ask my wife (aka The Other Half / The Better Half). The day online clothes shopping was invented was the time she celebrated with a wild street party.
But how do you know if clothes presented online would suit you, or more importantly, fit you?
picVpic aims to help with a side-by-side comparison tool, which my colleague Matt reviewed picVpic back in March. I am obviously not going to rehash everything that Matt did an excellent job of describing. Rather, my mission today, since I chose to accept it, is to show you what has changed and improved since Matt’s review.
Stand by, put your seat belts on, and let’s get ready to rumble!
For those of you who didn’t click through to Matt’s article (and why didn’t you?), picVpic is a site where you can search for whatever you are looking for, and it will search on your behalf through 2 million products on hundreds of sites. You can then pick the ones that interest you, line them up side-by-side, and choose which one you prefer.
So what has changed, that warrants a new write-up so soon?
Powerful Filters For Easier Shopping Decisions
Well, the company has developed what they call “unique filtering tags based on Artificial Intelligence“. So what’s this exactly and why should you give a flying toss about it? Simply put, not only can you specify what kind of clothes you want, and what colour, what price, etc, but you can now go even further by specifying further requirements.
Does your skirt have to be Bohemian? No problem…
Does that shirt against your smooth Chippendale skin have to be silk? Again, it’s a cinch…
Does your ballooning weight need a huge plus size? If such a size is out there, it will be found…
Let’s mosey on over to the site and see what these tags look like.
First — choose what you are looking for. I am in the market for a really bright loud pair of tartan trousers (pants to all of our American readers, and “troosers” to my Scottish brothers and sisters). So after landing on the site, I choose “pants”, and I am ready to rock and roll.
After clicking on Pants, I am taken to the main screen, where there is a bewildering range of options.
So the first step is to apply all the usual filters – Brand, Color, and Price. That should narrow things down more than a bit.
I should point out now that there are two plus signs at either side of the screen. You can drag your selections into these areas and create a collection to drop them into.
OK once the regular filters have taken you as far as possible, it is then time to set the “smart tags” as I will call them.
So I want a really loud (as in colourful) pair of tartan trousers / pants. How would I go about getting them? Let’s look at the first set of tags.
Underneath the coloured boxes, you will see some descriptions. Those are some of the tags I’m talking about. So choose the tags which closely resemble what you are looking for. If you don’t see the tag you’re looking for, you can search for it in the search box. Seriously, no description is off-limits. As you search, your results are updated in real time, so you can see instantly if what you are looking for is available.
On the right are more tags. The first column refers to the Style, the second column to the Element and the third to the Material.
I can just see myself walking down the street in one of these hot puppies! Checking myself out in shop windows. “I’m SO sexy….”.
Can’t Decide What To Buy? Ask Your Friends…
But I only have the money for one pair, and I can’t decide. So it’s time to get my impartial English buddies in on the act (because we all know how much the English love the Scots!). They can vote and tell you which ones they think would suit you (or not). Your comparison page has a special sharing URL, and as soon as you flick the Start Vote button, people who know the URL can register their opinion.
And most importantly, the voters can find out what you would look like from BEHIND. Now THAT’S one way to attract the female voters!
Why do I suddenly feel like John Travolta in “Saturday Night Fever” with the BeeGees playing in the background?
You can obviously stop the voting at any time, if you’ve decided already. Otherwise, as the votes come in, choices fall away as rivals surge ahead, until you are left with only one. When you have decided which pair of lady-seducers you are going for, you can then go directly to the store in question and buy them.
Seeing choices side-by-side helps enormously in the shopping decision process, and having those “smart tags” makes it even easier to specify what it is that you are looking for. Now you can really be a fussy shopper demanding whatever you want, because if it is out there, there is a good chance that picVpic will find it.
