How do you listen to music on the go? With music and movies being so easy to take around, be it on laptops, smartphones, or tablets, most of us take them everywhere we go, and listen to them from anywhere. For many cases, a good set of headphones is more than enough to enjoy your music or movies on the go, assuming you want to enjoy them alone and don’t mind a wire connection to your device.

A portable Bluetooth speaker is an affordable way to enjoy music, movies, or any audio for that matter, no matter where to are, no matter who you’re with, and even if your actual device is lying on the table in the other room. One of the most prominent players in the portable speaker market is the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox, which, at least on paper, is portable enough to be taken anywhere, yet powerful enough to provide good-quality audio, as well as couple as a speakerphone for your phone calls and audio chats.

We took the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox for a serious spin to find out what it’s made of, and now we’re giving it away to one of you! Curious how the speaker fared? Want to find out how you can win this $99 portable Bluetooth Boombox? All you have to do is keep on reading!

As you might expect, the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox is not alone in its category. For $99, you can choose one of five different available colors, and get a 10 ounces (~285 g) Bluetooth speaker with a 50-foot (~15 meters) range. The UE Mobile Boombox can pair up with two devices at the same time, and has an official battery life of 10 hours, with a USB-rechargeable battery.

Looking around in the market, there are several other competitors for the UE Mobile Boombox worth mentioning. First and foremost is the $130 Jawbone JAMBOX, which is slightly bigger and heavier than the Logitech, has a similar battery life, and can connect to Jawbone’s MyTalk portal for apps, software upgrades and new features. According to Jawbone, the JAMBOX has “integrated intelligence” which allows you to personalize it to your specific preferences, and comes in a variety of color combinations.

Other notable players include the Bose SoundLink, a more robust option that will cost you $300; the rugged and heavier Jabra SOLEMATE which you can get for $145, and the affordable SuperTooth Disco 2 which will only set you back by $80, but doesn’t include a speakerphone feature like most of the others.

logitech ue mobile boombox

If you like UE Mobile Boombox, but prefer something with better audio quality, the Logitech UE Boombox is the Mobile Boombox’s bigger sibling, and can be yours for $250. About three times bigger and heavier than the Mobile Boombox, this one aims to deliver much better sound for the audiophiles amongst you.

What’s In The Box?

Before we look inside the box, it’s worth spending a minute looking at the box itself. The Logitech UE Mobile Boombox comes packed in a sturdy plastic box, and encased between two rubber holders that ensure it doesn’t move while travelling.

logitech ue mobile boombox

While the box is definitely impressive, it’s also quite hard to open, especially if you’re trying to keep everything intact and not tear things up. After many minutes of turning it every which way, peeling off tape and stickers, removing the outer cardboard box (required two people to be done without tearing it), and scratching my head, I finally managed to get the treasure box open.

logitech ue mobile boombox

The UE Mobile Boombox is neatly packed between its rubber holders, with the small black box holding all the accessories that come with it except for one part of the wall charger and the small instructions booklet.

logitech ue mobile boombox

In the box, you’ll find the actual wall plugs (European and British in my case) that fit onto the USB adapter, a micro USB cable, and another booklet. As you can see, there’s not much to look at in terms of accessories, only the bare essentials. The speakers comes charged and ready to use out of the box, so there’s no need to mess with the charger just yet.

Hardware & Design

It might be due to my poor assessing skills, but no matter how many times I looked at the numbers, I was still surprised at how small and lightweight the Mobile Boombox is. Small enough to fit anywhere, including the palm of your hand, the UE Mobile Boombox truly is a portable speaker in every sense of the word.

logitech ue mobile boombox

But what good is a portable device if it’s going to get banged, scratched and dented? This is not something you’ll have to worry about with the UE Mobile Boombox. The entire outer surface of the speaker is covered in rubber, including the top, where you’ll find the huge yet inconspicuous volume and Bluetooth-paring buttons, as well as a tiny microphone.

logitech ue mobile boombox

The front and back aspects of the speaker are covered with rugged plastic mesh that will not easily dent or scratch, but might show marks, I suspect, if dropped from some height. The back also houses the power button, the micro USB charging port, and a standard 3.5 mm jack for wired listening.

Pairing The Logitech UE Mobile Boombox

Paring the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox with any Bluetooth-enabled device is easy, but does require some additional knowledge about the speaker (included in the instruction booklet). The first time you pair the speaker, you’ll find it in the Bluetooth devices list in your phone, tablet or computer, and all you’ll have to do is pair the two. The Mobile Boombox comes with an informative blue LED on top, as well as a set of sounds that will help you figure out if it’s paired or not.

logitech ue mobile boombox

Once paired with one device, pairing it with others will require use of the Bluetooth button on top of the device. Without it, your additional devices will not detect the speaker, even when Bluetooth is turned on. To make it discoverable again, long-press the Bluetooth button until the blue LED flashes quickly, wait for the speaker to appear in the device list, and pair it with the new device.

logitech ue mobile boombox

After the speaker is paired with a device, they will automatically detect each other. You can pair up to two devices at the same time, and switch between them simply by pausing the audio on one and starting it on the other. You’ll have to wait 1-2 seconds between the time you hit the play button until the UE Mobile Boombox picks up the new audio stream, but it does this flawlessly every time.

Living With The Logitech UE Mobile Boombox

logitech ue mobile boombox

I am no audiophile. I can tell the difference between bad sound and good sound, but you won’t find me nitpicking about technicalities. Nevertheless, I can tell you that the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox has excellent sound for what it is, a smartphone-sized mobile speaker. The first time I turned it on, the music engulfed the entire house, create a much better experience than any smartphone or tablet I own. It even surpasses the speakers on my new Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Ultrabook Review & Giveaway Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Ultrabook Review & Giveaway The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga is a laptop/tablet hybrid with a flexible screen which can be rotated 360 degrees, turning this seemingly regular-looking Ultrabook into a tablet. Don’t be confused by its appearance, though, this 13.3-inch... Read More . I now use it regularly to listen to music while working, enjoying a much better sound than I was used to.

logitech ue mobile boombox

Leaving my computer or smartphone in the living room, I can carry the UE Mobile Boombox with me around the house, and no matter how far away I get or how many walls stand between me and the device, the reception never even wavers. While there’s no way to control playback other than volume from the Boombox itself, you can easily set the device to play a full album, and leave the room to enjoy it.

logitech ue mobile boombox

If you pair the UE Mobile Boombox with your phone, it will double as a speakerphone for conferencing, or when you need a more powerful speakerphone than your smartphone. The caveat here is that the microphone reception is not as good as the speaker itself, so the person you’re talking to might get choppy audio if you get too far from your phone.

Should You Buy It?

Before reviewing the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox, I never considered owning a Bluetooth speaker. The bottom line is, I now do. I decided to keep this unit for myself and pay for it, rather than part with my newfound way of listening to music.

  43. Sabita M

I liked the Boombox, Logitech's first attempt at a tiny portable Bluetooth speaker.
Just Because it can't produce a ton of bass.we cannot ignore the fact these little speakers aren't really designed to be cranked up and belt out big booming sound. They can play loud for their size and fill a small room with sound, but they tend to sound best at 6-8 on the volume scale rather than at 10. They also offer virtually no stereo separation since their internal drivers are crammed so close together.
I would like to buy it because the Mobile Boombox is a very compact Bluetooth speaker that has a built-in rechargeable battery, speakerphone capabilities, a line input, and ruggedized design. It sounds good for its tiny size.Plus It is portable.

  74. Srikant M
    July 1, 2013 at 10:51 am

Sound quality definitely wins over portability any day. The portability factor is taken care of if you possess a nice pair of headphones. Anyway, I like keeping the sound to myself, hence, it is headphones over portable speakers for me, unless the speaker is something out of this world such as the Bose® SoundLink® Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II.

That aside, I think the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox is a value-for-money device.

Smartphones are replacing laptops and desktops even though PC's provide better quality of web browsing, emailing, larger screen, larger keyboard, etc...
So why not speakers go the same way...
Quality matters of course but portability is required by everyone these days...

Are you happy to sacrifice sound quality for portability? Would you buy the UE Mobile Boombox?

Yes, portability may not have the best quality.

  113. Tom Anderson
    June 29, 2013 at 6:12 pm

There has to be a compromise between sound quality and portability. I would totally buy this

  114. Dayna Wilson
    June 29, 2013 at 6:11 pm

Of course. Just being able to have decent quality portable music is a huge bonus. I would absolutely buy the boombox.

  126. Gibran
    June 29, 2013 at 2:40 pm

Sure, as someone once told me "You can't have everything in live", so it would be nice to take the speakers anywhere and listen to some music on the go, even if the sound quality is lower :D And because of that I would buy it

  150. Carlos Huallanca

I would use the boombox a lot. Its ideal for taking outside to partys or to the beach so from me i would sacrifice the quality for some portability but buy the sounds of this the quality isnt greatly reduced!

  152. Nathan Millar
    June 29, 2013 at 7:02 am

As other users have said, everyone knows you can not take the speakers you have in your office or living room, on the go with you. This said, I would be happy to sacrifice some sound quality for portability and I think these speakers offer both.

  153. Ismael R

    June 29, 2013 at 3:36 am

  195. Alan C
    June 27, 2013 at 4:36 pm

To a certain extent I would sacrifice sound quality for portability, but there is a point where it is no longer worth it to me, if it sounds bad, then there is no point in listening to it anymore. And no I probably wouldn't buy it, as it is not a neccessity item, and we don't have the extra money for something like this. But it would sure be nice to win something for a change. lol :)

I think I would consider purtchasing it at the $50-$70 range. But $100 is too much for the device. There are other portable alternatives that are considerably less but will do in a pinch. At $50 I actually want it. At $100 I just think about the poor folks who already purchased it

It depends on what I want to listen to as to whether I'm willing to sacrifice sound quality. If I'm not overly into what I'm listening to, I'll make the sacrifice, but if it's something I truly want to get down to, no way. Sound quality all the way.

  230. Choon Khai

  243. Joel Wavrecan
    June 26, 2013 at 11:15 am

I may sacrifice a little sound quality for mobility; but if I had to sacrifice too much sound quality, then what's the point of having it anyways. When I listen to my music, I like to LISTEN to my music, not struggle through distortion, reverb and/or dropout.

  248. Antony

  249. vicntc
    June 26, 2013 at 7:35 am

  252. Jason Reid
    June 26, 2013 at 6:32 am

The portable speaker seems worth the price; I don't expect home theater sound. However, I have many Logitech products and have always been please with their quality... I would expect no less from the UE Mobile Boombox.

Mmm... I don't think I am. I'm not really that mobile, so I'd just gift it to a friend who could really use it. (If i win of course :P )

Would you buy the UE Mobile Boombox? Maybe, would have to test it.

A sacrifice is acceptable, but not at a $100 price tag.

  268. John Ruiz
    June 26, 2013 at 2:07 am

Definitely yes for me! I like the portable size of the UE Mobile Boombox and simply the fact that it sounds better than the original Jambox.

  270. Aaron

  273. Vic Limbo
    June 26, 2013 at 12:46 am

At some point, I will sacrifice sound quality for portability, but not all the time. It much better to compare a full blown speaker to enjoy your music, but you cannot carry it all the time.

And yes, UE Mobile Boombox will be considered in buying.

  274. Lesia Rohozynsky
    June 26, 2013 at 12:46 am

Yes. Because then I can listen to music in more places :)

I am not a extrem sound fetishist but tinny and weak sound is not good even for an portable device. But by the way I currently have no smartphone nor a Bluetooth ready device. So I wouldn't buy the Boombox right now!

It's portable, so that has to be taken into account when looking at sound quality. That said, if it sounds good, it may be worth the investment. Too bad the mic is a weak point.

  290. zerifi

  317. Scott M
    June 25, 2013 at 3:03 pm

I'm not happy about it but sacrifices have to made with smaller portable devices. As long as the bass doesn't struggle and the upper end isn't tinny I will be happy.

  318. Kay Fritz

I have a Logitech Squeezbox Radio and I am very happy with it. The sound quality for such a small device is very good and to sacrifice sound quality for portability is O.K. for me.

  323. mike
    June 25, 2013 at 2:08 pm

I've been looking for one of these types of things. This might be the one I'm looking for, I don't know.

  324. Justin Klyczek
    June 25, 2013 at 2:05 pm

I think there's a time and place for this and obviously you have to allow for a decrease in quality. It looks like a mighty fine device!

  325. Miguel Lopes
    June 25, 2013 at 2:04 pm

Sure, for now. If I didn't win this giveway, why not.

  326. Michael Odza
    June 25, 2013 at 2:04 pm

What ever happened to stereo speakers, not to speak of surround sound? Is it just that convenience of a single box outweighs the value of the effect of multiple speakers?

  327. Gavin
    June 25, 2013 at 2:01 pm

I'd buy a boombox as long as the sacrifice isn't too big...

  328. Ashwin Singh
    June 25, 2013 at 1:59 pm

yes i would like to buy this product. Very portable and good sound

  329. Luke
    June 25, 2013 at 1:58 pm

Portability is very important even if you have to sacrifice a bit of quality. Decent sound is better than no sound at all. I would buy it!

  330. Harshit J
    June 25, 2013 at 1:52 pm

The sacrifice should be very little otherwise not.

  331. KillerPoPTarT
    June 25, 2013 at 1:39 pm

  332. mihirchheda13
    June 25, 2013 at 1:32 pm

Sometimes portability is more important then the sound quality!
Yes, I'd buy the Boombox but its better if I get it for free! ;)

  333. Waleed Butt
    June 25, 2013 at 1:30 pm

i would buy it, it can come into handy when travelling or mostly when one is not at home, sometimes you need high volume and since i cant drag my speakers everywhere, this size and portability will be helpful

  334. sharyn
    June 25, 2013 at 1:28 pm

To actually have such portability with sound would be fantastic.
So yes i would happily swap sound quality for portability.
    Thank you

if i can have the gadget i am willing.

  336. Wayne W
    June 25, 2013 at 1:17 pm

I would rather not sacrifice sound quality however, the sound quality is bound to be better than the sound quality of the speakers on my Droid Razr. In that respect it would be a step up. They may not be as good as a stereo system but that because it's not a stereo system.

This type of speaker would be perfect for my desk at work!!

  337. Dany Bouffard
    June 25, 2013 at 1:15 pm

I dont mind loosing a bit of quality for convenience sometimes.

  338. Vince
    June 25, 2013 at 1:13 pm

I have several Logitech products and the quality has always been great! Don't expect anything different for the Mobile Boombox. It is probably not as good as the Squeezebox though.

  339. Daniel Perez
    June 25, 2013 at 1:09 pm

I think sound quality is most important, especially in a $100 speaker, but a free one? I'd make allowances.

  340. Tiago Rosado
    June 25, 2013 at 1:07 pm

Are you happy to sacrifice sound quality for portability? Would you buy the UE Mobile Boombox?

if you want sound on the cant take the home stereo system so yes!

    June 25, 2013 at 1:06 pm

  342. Tim Bain
    June 25, 2013 at 1:05 pm

I'd use this mainly outdoors, so the ambient sounds would make a difference to sound quality for any device so this sounds about right as far as quality vs size goes. I'd buy it.

  343. shahzad hussain
    June 25, 2013 at 1:05 pm

  350. Ryan Campbell
    June 25, 2013 at 12:46 pm

    Seems worth the price.
I have one question, I recently noticed, that India is excluded from shipping T-shirts which were recently available. (And for obvious reasons, including crappy postal services here, or expensive non-crappy ones)
So I was wondering if being from India, I should ever participate in any giveaways, if I am already excluded?

    • Omstavan Samant
      June 27, 2013 at 4:22 am

They expect us to receive it via forwarding services like and they are rather costly. Talking about shipping services in India, I have won several books from a book giveaway website and each of the books has been delivered without any hassle!

Everyone knows that you cannot take your living room speakers and stereo with you on the go. Portability means some sacrifice, but you can get good sound from these portable speakers, volume is also important especially if using in open spaces to entertain.

Based on the excellent review I would buy the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox for music on the go.
