However, going to point out that Open Source Software is often abbreviated OSS, Free as in freedom is often referred to as free/libre, and thus Free-as-in-freedom Open Source Software is often FOSS or FLOSS (for Free/Libre...FL). Also, I think terminal v. shell needs some definition, but I'm not sure exactly how to define it simply. The window in which the commands are typed is the terminal. But the shell is....I guess you'd say it's what interprets the commands, and the different shells (Bourne Again, Korn, Z, MirBSD Korn, etc) each have their own idiosyncrasies and special built-in functions.
