Reddit is a website that is sweeping the social news medium. If you are anything like me, you spend any free time during your work day sitting on Reddit and reading random stories or looking at funny pictures. It's one of those websites where time seems to enter some sort of vortex and the next thing you know, you've wasted 3 hours of the day. Of course, this can have a negative impact on your job performance, but at least it makes the day go by faster. Sure, there are lots of ways to increase productivity out there, but I'm here to show you a way to kill productivity completely.

What do you do when you are not at work, and you have just posted a picture that is going cause the up-votes to pour in, which you need to keep constant tabs on? Or what if you know something important is going to happen in r/cheese and you need to know the moment it does? Fortunately, there is the awesome iPhone and iPad application called Alien Blue to solve all of your "away from the computer" Reddit needs.

If you are completely new to Reddit and would like to know some of the basics, check out this article. It will help you learn some of the cool stuff Reddit can do.

Setting The App Up

To install the app on your iPhone or iPad, just visit Alien Blue's website and click on the relevant link. You will then be taken to the download page where you can install the app. As it begins to install, wait a few brief moments and you will be ready to start wasting even more your life browsing Reddit.

After the app has installed, you will need to sync it with your Reddit account so it can pull in all of the various subreddits to which you are subscribed.

To do this first click on the little settings icon at the bottom of the screen.

On the settings screen there is a link to add a Reddit account, click that and enter in your Reddit username and password to store it on your device and have all your information synced every time you open the app.

The app will let you know that storing your Reddit account was a success and now you will have access to your Reddit, as if you were on a computer.

App Features

Alien Blue is the most feature packed Reddit app I have found in the app store, even without upgrading to the Pro version. It has everything from being able to see your subscribed subreddits, to manually typing in a subreddit, and even the ability to see all of your posts and comments, so you know if you are getting up-votes or down-votes.

Once in a subreddit, you are greeted with a list of all posts. Tap on the post to be taken to whatever the post is (i.e. a picture, comment or a website). Tap on the number on the right side of the screen to be taken to the comments for the post. This is where some of the real gold lives on Reddit, so make sure to always take the time to read the gems of wisdom from the Reddit community.

To up-vote, down-vote, or reply to a comment, slide your finger across it to have the comment options pop out the bottom. This same principle applies to up-voting the post itself. On the subreddit main screen slide your finger across the post you wish to up-vote, and a similar menu will pop out.

Pro Features

Alien Blue offers a lot of features in the free version, and for most people that should be plenty. However, for the most hardcore Reddit fans, there is a pro version, which costs a very reasonable $1.99.

A list of the features in the Pro version are as follows:

  • Canvas View and Image Galleries.
  • Create Posts / Self Threads.
  • Exclude Posts by Keywords.
  • One-Tap Imgur Integration.
  • One-Tap Quoting.
  • Multiple / Novelty Account support.
  • "Hide All" displayed posts (syncs automatically with your Reddit account).
  • One-Tap to "View All Images" in a thread.
  • Subscribe & Unsubscribe to Reddits via Alien Blue.
  • Tilt Scroll.

Even without these features, the free version of the app is still better than any other Reddit app on the market.

Conclusion

Alien Blue, whether it is the free version or the pro version, is by far the best Reddit app on the app store. I can't recommend it enough. If you are a regular Reddit user then this app is a must-have.
