Poetry lovers with an iPad are going to be ultra happy today. The Josephine Hart Poetry Foundation has recently launched The Poetry App, which is an incredibly feature-rich application for iPad and coming soon to Android and iPhone. This app offers tons of poetry for users to dig into and get their fill.
There are over 100 poems included by 16 of the greatest poets of all time. Reading the poems to yourself is great, but hearing them read aloud by a talented storyteller really makes the poems jump of the page and hit an emotional core. Josephine Hart believed “that poetry truly comes alive when read aloud.” This app reflects that belief by including recordings for most of the included poems.
The poems are read to you by some incredibly talented voice actors. These include great storytellers such as Dan Stevens, Dominic West, Juliet Stephenson, Sinead Cusack, Charles Dance, Simon Callow and Jeremy Irons. The talent of these actors help make the poems come alive in a way that reading them yourself cannot.
In addition to poems, the app also includes in-depth essays by Josephine Hart that help put the poems in context and help you to better understand them.
They also included creation tools for aspiring poets. You can write and record your own poems directly from this free app.
They had a soft launch last month, and they are almost ready for the big stage. The iPad app is available now, and the iPhone and Android version are coming on September 13th.
