Are you finding that your Mac isn't running as smoothly as it once was? After having spent over $1,000 on a computer, poor performance shouldn't be tolerated.

The best option for boosting the speed of your Mac permanently is to upgrade its hardware, as nothing will speed up a computer like more RAM, a better processor, or an SSD. However, that's not a practical solution in all cases, and that's where software like MacBooster 2 comes into play.

The important question is: does MacBooster 2 actually speed up an ailing Apple computer, or is it just a bunch of unnecessary tools? Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) I happen to have a mid-2011 MacBook Pro that isn't running well, which makes it the perfect test subject. Keep reading to find out how the software handled my MacBook.

One Click

One of the main features of IObit's MacBooster 2 is the ability to use a single scan feature to clean up multiple of aspects of your Mac. The idea is to make the process as simple as possible, allowing you to hit one button and make your Mac faster (though you will need to intervene after the scan process to actually get rid of stuff).

On the screen labeled "System Status" you'll see Security Risks, Junk Files, and Performance Monitor. Clicking the "Scan" button on the bottom of the screen will initiate the scanning through each of these three sections, and then offer some ways to speed things up. MacBooster 2 will give you the option to remove files you don't need from your drive, fix permissions, release RAM, check for malware, and plenty of other tests. Once finished, you're prompted take action to fix problems.

If you don't want to scan all three sections, you can do each one individually. So, if you only want to check for malware, you can click the option to do just that. This can save time if you don't need to run through all of the processes, but if it's your first time using the software, it's probably in your best interest to run a thorough scan.

MacBooster 2 found quite a few issues with my Mac, though none of them involved malware or anything that would be considered a long-term threat. It freed up a bunch of RAM, helped me delete files from my hard drive, and fixed disk permissions. Most of what it did can be done manually, but MacBooster 2 took the hassle of multiple operations and turned it into a simple one-click process.

As easy as it all sounds, I have noticed better performance from my Mac. It doesn't feel like it did when it was new, but it did improve after using MacBooster 2, which is all you can really ask for without purchasing any hardware upgrades.

Smaller Tweaks

There's plenty of other options in addition to the single click speed-ups, and some of them are quite useful. The first option you will see is the ability to clean memory. This basically just releases inactive RAM and allows it to be use by other programs. Having a large amount of memory tied up can slow down your system, and releasing it can make a difference in the speed.

Another cool service is the ability to clean up your startup process. You may not even notice it, but you could have a huge list of programs lined up to be launched soon after your computer boots up. With MacBooster 2, you can select those that you don't need, and prevent them from launching at startup, so you can start working faster. If you have an SSD, this won't be as useful, but for those of us still running with spinning hard disk drives, speeding up startup can be a great feature to have.

You'll also find a program uninstaller, which allows you to completely delete applications. This frees up a bit of disk space, as it allows you to remove trace files that would stick around otherwise.

A photo sweeper and duplicate finder are also available, which is another tool designed to free up space by finding duplicate images and files and letting you delete them. The usefulness of this feature will vary, but if you deal with a ton of files and photos, duplicates are bound to happen, and this will help you dump them and open up your drive a bit. If you have a smaller SSD, every megabyte is valuable, so it can actually make a difference.

The Large File Cleaner is probably worth mentioning. As you can probably guess from the name, it scans your drive and shows you the largest files. You can then choose to delete them if they're no longer necessary.

The last feature, and one that will be useful to some people, is a secure file remover. This allows you to drag a file to the window and have it deleted without being recoverable. If you work with files that need to be permanently removed from your drive, you'll enjoy this feature, though average users might find its usefulness to be underwhelming.

Long Haul Usefulness

One of the cooler aspects of this program is the fact that it sits in the Menubar at all times, allowing you to speed up your Mac with a quick click. You can click "One Click Cleanup" to tell the program to run through a fast process of cleaning, or "RAM Clean" to just dump the inactive RAM. It will indicate approximately how much it has sped up for Mac with this process, though it's not clear exactly how it's determining this information.

You can also open the program and run through the longer scans to keep things running as smoothly as possible. It's definitely worth having MacBooster 2 installed for the long haul, as it will help keep your Mac running as fast as possible.

Wrapping Up

In the end, I definitely noticed a small improvement in the speed of my MacBook after using MacBooster 2. At $59.95 for a standard license which can be used on 3 computers (purchase a licence here), it isn't cheap, but compared to hardware upgrades to speed up a slow Mac, it's definitely a reasonable price. A single computer license is available for $39.95. The 3-PC license is a better deal, but feel free to give it a try before committing to a purchase.

Overall, MacBooster 2 isn't going to make your Mac feel like a brand new computer, of course, but it does a good job of integrating a bunch of different tools into a single app for easy use. If your Mac isn't running as well as it once did, you should definitely check out MacBooster 2.
