You know what's great? Getting things that used to cost money for free. That's just what Iconfactory is doing with its popular Twitter client known as Twitterrific. Before now, the application sold for $2.99 on the App Store, and now it has decided to take the freemium route with its application.

The free version is now supported through adverts, and there are in-app purchases (IAPs) that unlock various features that would have previously been behind the standard $2.99 pay wall. Some of the features offered behind the IAPs are luxuries – things like the Today View, language translation, and ad removal. On the other side, push notifications are also unlocked through an in-app purchase. This is a little less of a luxury, and something people using Twitter's default client are used to getting for free.

Still, being able to get a free application that would normally be unavailable for free is always a good thing, and it's hard to read it as anything but a positive for anyone who was looking to check it out, but wasn't comfortable dropping cash for the upfront purchase. Now, if you find it's something you really like, you can unlock the premium features through the IAPs.

Each of the in-app purchases are $1.99, but you can also purchase them all for a one time fee of $2.99. There's a second purchase listed for $3.99. Both are called "Everything," so it's unclear why anyone would purchase the more expensive one.

Of course, users who already paid for the premium application will get the premium features right away, so if that's you, no need to worry about having to buy everything again.

The update and new price model for Twitterific is available from the App Store right now.
