Like most commercial holidays, Valentine’s day spells another wave of app promotions for Apple’s App Store. And they’re not all lovey-dovey apps about ponies and everlasting love – regular app developers can smell opportunity at 100 paces, so there’s plenty to choose from.

This week’s we’re all about useful apps, with translation, business planning and study tools all making an appearance, plus a handful of games currently on offer.

Apps

TextGrabber + Translator ($5.99, now $1.99)

An app from OCR and translation service ABBYY, TextGrabber allows you to point, shoot and translate almost any printed material. The app recognizes 60 languages including English, German, Spanish, French, Russian as well as Chinese and Korean too; and can translate more than 40 languages into English (Internet connection required). Not a bad deal at this price.

Elevatr ($4.99, now $2.99)

Now this is a cool app! Elevatr is a business planner for your iPhone that’s been used around the world by 100,000 entrepreneurs and recommended by Apple in their Business Essentials round-up. The app guides you through the process of creating a business plan and offers coaching from Elevatr’s team of experts along the way. Grab it now while it’s on sale and get a head start on your next big idea.

IM+ Pro7 ($4.99, now $1.99)

Tabata! Daily 4-Minute Workouts ($1.99, now free)

Looking for a way to motivate yourself into to doing some physical exercise? Why not rely on your iPhone and this tabata app which puts you through some gruelling 4-minute exercises, none of which require any special equipment. The best thing about this training app is the sense of humour, complete with comical personal trainer.

Clone Camera Pro / iPad version ($1.99, now free)

Clone Camera Pro and its iPad version allow you to clone your subject by taking a variety of photos. The app works best with a tripod, shooting from a fixed angle, and much of the work is handled for you by the app itself. With a bit of patience you can get some pretty interesting effects, perfect for cloning a Valentine’s date or two.

Games

Football Manager Handheld 2014 ($9.99, now $5.99)

Football fans beware, Football Manager like crack for your thumbs! This handheld version is the spiritual successor to the original Championship Manager, a game that managed to steal the hearts and free time of generations throughout the 90s and 2000s. Rivals for Catan ($3.99, now $1.99)

Circle Stop ($1.99, now free)

A delightfully simple game played with a simple tap, Circle Stop requires you tap the screen to trap the circle in the target. Easy to pick up but very difficult to put down, Circle Stop is one of those perfect quick-blast reaction games, and it’s universal for both iPhone and iPad to boot.
