Christmas is just around the corner, and while you’re busy buying gifts for everyone else you might also want to grab a bargain for yourself. That’s where your weekly dose of Apps on Sale comes in, to deliver you from boredom and ensure there’s something new on your phone or tablet for free each week.

This week we’ve got a bit of a shortage of games, but some killer standard apps including App of the Week Instapaper, a mobile vocoder and an “escape the room” classic that’ll have you scratching your head. On to the deals!

Instapaper ($3.99, now free)

Currently the official App of the Week, Instapaper is a popular read-it-later that formats the web for your device, so everything you read is optimized for the screen you’re reading it on. The app supports the storage of 500 articles for offline reading and is can save items from more than 150 other iOS apps. Download it while it’s free!

iVoxel ($9.99, now $4.99)

Wondering how your most and least favourite singers are able to sound like robots from time to time? It’s probably a vocoder doing the work, and now you can give it a go yourself with iVoxel. The app comes complete with a voice-optimised synthesizer with vocoder technology based on Matrix by VirSyn, as used by Kraftwerk.

Splashtop 2 Remote Desktop ($19.99, now $0.99)

This week on sale for quite the saving at 99 cents, Splashtop 2 is the sequel to the first best-selling remote desktop app that usually retails for around $20. You’ll need to install the Splashtop server app on your Mac or Windows PC first, then you’re able to access your computer remotely using your iPhone or iPad.

NoteSuite ($4.99, now $1.99)

There’s no shortage of note-taking apps on the App Store, and here comes NoteSuite to provide another viable alternative to past favourites like WriteRoom and Simplenote. NoteSuite is somewhat of a note powerhouse, however, allowing you to type, write, scrawl or annotate a huge range of files. NoteSuite is currently 60% off at only $1.99.

Strip Designer ($2.99, now $0.99)

Looking for inspiration for a fun Christmas gift, but lack many of the basic skills to make something yourself? What about a custom comic strip, created using your iPhone or iPad and a copy of Strip Designer? Import photos, design your frames and insert over the top comic book props – currently on sale for $0.99.

The Room ($1.99, now free)

More escapology than “You are tearing me apart, Lisa!“,  this brain-teaser is a veritable iOS classic. To celebrate the release of The Room Two developers Fireproof Games have decided to give away the original for free for a limited time. Have you got what it takes to escape from The Room?

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 ($4.99, now $0.99)

Easily one of the best fighting games ever made, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 takes a host of characters from X-Men and other Marvel comics and pits them against Street Fighter characters like Ryu and Ken as well as Mega Man and a host of other Capcom characters. If you enjoy completely over top beat ’em ups with insane special combos, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is worth your time.

Bloodmasque ($6.99, now free)

In a vampire-ruled Paris, you are a vampire hunter. You are half-human and half-vampire, and must overcome the oppressive regime using impressive strength and typically Japanese fighting moves. Released in July, SQUARE ENIX’s action RPG Bloodmasque has gone free for a week in order to celebrate 500,000 downloads.

PAC-MAN ($4.99, now $0.99)

I’m not sure who is going to pay a full $5 for the age-old game of PAC-MAN on their iPhone or iPad, but I do know that $0.99 is a much more appealing price point. If you’re still hung up on the age of arcade machines and bad hair then you can relive some childhood joy here, complete with 8 new mazes to switch things up a bit.
