Halloween generally means scary films, lots of sugar and dressing up but for app developers it’s a great time to hold a sale instead. Any excuse a good excuse, right?

This week we’re mostly looking at games (surprise: people want to play games on Halloween) rather than useful apps, including a cheaper Deus Ex, two turn-based tactical strategy games and a classic JRPG from SQUARE ENIX.

Apps

Atlas by Collins ($0.99, now free)

I know, I know – your tablet or phone already has a Maps app. You’ve probably got Google Maps too. This universal offering from Collins is a throwback to the days of paper atlases, and features a huge array of facts and figures, as well as heat maps and statistics that’ll please anyone who had a big fat Collins atlas as a child. And it’s free (for now).

Games

Deus Ex: The Fall ($6.99, now $4.99)

SQUARE ENIX bring the fabulous Deus Ex series to your iPhone or iPad with The Fall, a made-for-mobile gaming experience that blends RPG elements with your choice of action or stealth in an epic story-driven touch-friendly gaming experience.

Sid Meier’s Pirates! for iPhone/iPad ($2.99/$4.99, now $0.99)

Ever wanted to be a swashbuckling pirate? Well now you can be, thanks to this port of the Sid Meier classic. It’s not quite the entire PC game, but it’s not far off and offers much of the same discovery and battle except this time on your iPhone or iPad. Unfortunately this isn’t a universal app, so you’ll need to buy the correct version, but at least they’re both reduced to $0.99.

Kingdom Rush Frontiers for iPhone/iPad ($2.99/$4.99, now $2.99/$0.99)

The critically acclaimed tower defense game is having a 66% off Halloween special, and while you can’t grab a universal copy you can get both editions at a reduced rate if you buy at the moment. Breach & Clear ($3.99, now $1.99)

If you like your shooters with a heavy dose of tactics thrown in, Breach & Clear is a modern iOS strategy game for you. Borrowing heavily from the likes of Rainbow Six and XCOM, this is a universal app that seamlessly blends real-time firefights with turn-by-turn strategy.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown ($19.99, now $9.99)

For a limited time only get this epic turn-based strategy game for half price. Take on an unknown enemy as head of earth’s XCOM paramilitary organisation. Build a base, recruit soldiers, research alien technology and head into battle, complete with a random mission generator and optimised touch controls.

Rayman Jungle Run ($2.99, now $0.99)

One of 2012’s most celebrated games, Rayman is back in this endless runner featuring more than 70 levels, bright and bouncy graphics and  soundtrack to match. If you’re a fan of platformers and runners, don’t miss it!

Final Fantasy IV ($15.99, now $7.99)

It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but this completely 3D remake of Final Fantasy IV is currently half price. Considering the price it usually goes for ($15.99), now’s not a bad time to discover (or rediscover) a classic SQUARE ENIX role-playing game.

This should keep you going for another week, let us know what you think in the comments!
