Some of you may have noticed the login buttons at the top of the sidebar here at MakeUseOf, so today I’m here to explain what they are, why you might want to use them, what the point system is, and how to exchange those points to get fantastic free software and services! I think you’re going to like this!
Community Rewards
Today we’re excited to announce the newest addition to the community system – MakeUseOf Rewards. It’s our way of saying thank you: thank you for sharing our articles with your friends and helping MakeUseOf grow; thank you for contributing your views and tips in the comments, or helping out a fellow user on our Answers technical support; thank you for not blocking ads to ensure we can continue to bring you great content for free; and thank you for deciding MakeUseOf is worthy of your time and attention.
To show we me mean it, we’ve been busy securing premium quality software and services to offer to you, all completely for FREE. All you need to do is head on over to the Rewards page, and exchange some of your hard earned points for your choice of software.

Be quick though – numbers are limited. Don’t worry too much, as we’ll be adding more software every month so you’ll always have something great to look forward to. If you’re already registered and logged in with some points to your name (check your profile in the top right of the sidebar or go to your profile page). Then head over to the rewards page to see what you can do with your points.
If you’d like to know more about the system, like how to register and how to get more points, then read on.
Register Or Log In
First off, it’s a one-click registration or log in using your social credentials – Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft Live. Just click one of the buttons to begin!

If you don’t see these buttons, please ensure you’re not running any Javascript blocking plugins such as NoScript, AdBlock, or Ghostery.
Once logged in, that section of the sidebar will turn into a personal profile space, showing how many points you have, what rank you’ve achieved, and more.

Why Should I Log In?
You’ll be able to comment around the site without having to enter your email address every time, as well as get help from our wonderful Answers community for any computer problems you might be having. You’ll be automatically notified of responses to your question, and you’ll be able to mark them as resolved.
As you take various actions around the site, you’ll accumulate points and gain in user ranks. More on that in a moment.
Getting Points
You’ll get a few points just for registering, but how do you get more? Here’s how:
- Commenting: You’ll get 5 points for adding a comment on any of our articles.
- Answering A Question On MakeUseOf Answers: For being helpful to your fellow readers, we’ll give you 10 points!
- Sharing Articles: Anytime you read an interesting article, use the social share buttons on the page to share it with your friends, and you’ll get 10 points for helping MakeUseOf grow our readership! Not only that, but you’ll also get points for every friend that clicks through because of your shared link – it’s our way of thanking you for being so influential!

There is a daily limit on how many of each action you can get points for, so don’t try to overdo it or spam your friends. If you go over that limit, we won’t punish you obviously, but you just won’t get any more points for that action until the next day. Also, I hope we don’t need to say this, but our comments editor Tina has eyes like a hawk, so anyone making nonsense comments purely to get points will be banned immediately and their account deleted – you have been warned!
User Ranks
There are various badges to collect, some with up to 5 ranks each. You see your progress towards them all on your full profile page.

The main rank shown in your profile is your MUO Geek Rank – and every action you take on the site will count towards your Geek Rank. On your full profile page, you can also see the other various badges available – specific challenges for commenting, answering questions, or sharing articles. We’ll be introducing some special new badges at various points, too.
As you perform more of the relevant actions, your points total will go up and your rank will increase.

There are leaderboards too of course. They show top users this week as well as all-time high scores. You can be famous!

And then there’s the Rewards system we talked about already. Don’t worry though – your rank won’t decrease when you spend those points – those are based upon your total so far since joining.
Feedback, suggestions and ideas welcome. Are you already flying high on our leaderboard?

Awesome, I wondered what do points get – now I know :)
Same with me
This is a really cool idea. I was wondering what those points were going to be used for, and this was a welcomed surprise. Let the rewarding commence!
If only I could exchange my points for a new monitor.
Great idea, hopefully i can even help someone :)
I was wondering about those points. When I signed up for the first time I saw the points but I figured they were there like any forum on the net. Now I know, though I probably wont be using much of this software as most of what I use on my Linux machine is free any way.
This is pretty cool
Hey community! What would be the best software you would like to earn?
I think it would be good if you got points when people replied to your comments too. That would reward interesting / helpful comments.
what if this may lead to flooding of not useful comments?
As James has explained, our comments editor Tina, will be closely monitoring the comments. Any crap comments will be deleted and any persistent offenders will be set upon by wild salivating MakeUseOf dogs.
As Mark said, all comments are monitored. And as of this month, this will be done by me and Saikat.
Awww doggies, I wuv doggies! Pix?!
Motivation to get myself to be a bit more social online AND free stuff? This looks like a dream come true!
Great way to engage the users . I have my eyes set on postbox and lastpass premium.
COOL !!
This is really nice!! I really appreciate this reward system!!
But I would like to know what is the daily limit of making points?
I’m afraid it isnt a good idea to divulge that, as it encourages misuse of the system. There is a cooldown between getting points, and a max in one day. thats all I can say!
Well, I guess someone will just have to test it and find out!
I traded some points for PostBox. The process was extremely simple – a click and you’re taken to the product’s normal purchase screen, except a promo code has been supplied and the price is $0.
This isn’t a one-version-only trick similar to other ‘giveaway’ sites, this is the real deal. A proper, full license.
Thanks MUO, you guys just keep getting better and better.
I don’t remember when I first learned of MUO or from where on the Internet, I do remember that Aibek was the sole blogger mentioned on the site (that I can remember), there were few if any advertisements, no guides, no giveaways, no mention of android phones and very limited iOS information. I remember the first time the format changed…and then again and again. It was before I was able to have a favorites bar on my desktop, but my use has always been the same. When I turn my PC on in the morning, I read three things on the Internet every single day: the Obits (sad, but true), Give Away of the Day, and Make Use Of. I never signed up though have endorsed a few things on my anonymous Facebook page. I have suggested it to a good number of friends by sending a link in email.
MUO has given me more ideas and new knowledge than any other website I have visited and I spend about 7 hours a day on the Internet as a casualty of the economy (unemployed over 3 years). So, thank you Aibek for starting a blog with down-to-earth content and useable information. And thank you to all of your cohorts who have joined you in making MUO a part of the start of each day for me. I wish all of you continued success and sincerely hope you are reaping the financial rewards of producing a site that is a real life benefit to us, its readers.
Thank you very much for the great comment, Larry! I cannot tell you how awesome it is to hear from a loyal reader. This totally made my day! :)
Thanks a lot, Larry! It’s always great to hear how much readers enjoy our work.
Thank you Larry! It’s always great to hear from someone who has been with us for so long.
Your comment reminded of the first theme we had on MUO, really plain one)))
cool!!
you guys just keep getting better and better
Excellent idea – although MUO was great to start off with.
This is amazing. However, not many licenses are left. Nevertheless, I shall be commenting!
What a great way to get comments. I know I’ll comment more now.
Thanks for the article, makes for an easier time when trying earn points.
Just reached 200 points. already have the option to redeem it for some great tools. Once again thankyou guys.
Aw. Points, I never knew what you are about until now. Thanks!
This is awesome stuff. I’m tempted to grab a free year of LastPass Premium (I already pay for it anyway, it’s awesome), but I think I’ll leave the limited rewards for the loyal readers!
free stuff Wahoo!
Thank you once agan. I have already redeemed by points and i would be happy to see some premium antivirus software(either windows or android) in the list of giveaway softwares.
the points should be based on the visits/day. i visit for about 8 times a day and for about 4 times during my working days. but i hate to comment even on facebook :( whatever the points may be i love makeuseof .
Good idea! :) Not sure we can implement it, but it may be worth a thought.
Have been reading MUO for quite some time and this is now the perfect time to sign up. Thanks MUO!
Lots of thanks to MakeUseOf…
I already redeemed one of reward that is last pass premium nice one!!!!!!!!!!
this reward is different from others.
I think this might really help move people (like myself) to comment on things
This is great! I do like helping people for free… but i like it even more when i can get something for it! Great idea ;)
this is why i signed up…free software ftw :)
You guys cease to amaze me. What an amazing idea. I wish I would have never stopped writing for you guys.
This is a great way to get free software, while discouraging frowned upon torrenting. Thanks!
Cool System :D
Great idea! Thanks.
cool Idea. :)
Its cool to encourage users to participate more actively in your articles using this point system.
Sweet!
Wow….its amazing!
I just used my 25 points in joining a contest….wow..that’s cool…
Must say I am enjoying this.
Simply awesome
know i know and I guess you could say, “knowing is half the battle” :)
Nice Initiative :)
just came across this, and I think it’s ingenious! looking forward to seeing more rewards being offered on the program, not just ones that are entries into giveaways. I’d rather work hard for a shot at actually getting something than the chance of getting something (and I know you offer this right now with the software giveaways – thanks!)
This site is awesome as is! Now, I’m excited about getting rewarded just by being “social”
I’ve been reading the site for some years, found a lot of cool tools on it, and now there is a reward system for reading the site and sharing knowledge.
How more awesome can it become.
Congrats to the whole team.
And keep up with the simple (as in not complicated with difficult terms) but very interesting posts. :-)
Cool, now I get free stuff for doing what I do anyway. ;-)
I’m down for free stuff :-)
Wow! I’m #55 this week. I think, I have found a new haven. Goodluck to everyone! Enjoy reading and sharing! :)
Lovin it so far. It’s awesome to get free techy stuff for doing what I do all day anyways.
Wow, this is a great way to reward loyal readers AND gain new ones!
Could MakeUseOf get anymore awesome? (hoping you can)
I did some simple math and figured out that each point is worth 10 cents. Since each comment gets you 5 points, it figures each comment is worth 50 cents!
Browsing MakeUseOf sure beats an hourly job ;-)
Just a note, there needs to be a more prominent login button. I had quite a bit of trouble trying to find it. Another thing is, the points thing seems to make the website a bit sluggish.
Point values may change as we tweak the system, of course.
As for login button, I did put a label there, a big thing that said LOGIN. But Aibek took it away. ;(
Uh oh, I have a gut feeling of what the “tweaks” are. As more poeple join the point system and more points enter the market, inflation will occur. Soon, the prices of software will skyrocket to thousands of points and only those that dedicate their souls to MakeUseOf will be able to afford them. What’s worse is inflation will rise faster than I’m able to earn points. It’s Germany 1929 all over again!
… something like that. But thats ok, work hard now and you’ll always have enough points!
Awesome :)
is there any way to exchange points for facebook credits
… No.
I see… *rubs hands together*
Wow, I just need to earn a lot of point to get those.
love this idea. its really cool
Achievements? Achievements!
Great job done by you guys and ladies! Thank you. By the way, what is the limit?
The limits are classified ;)
I’d really like to see a page that tells us EVERYTHING about MakeUseOf points. There’s some information in the Getting Points section on this page and on the MakeUseOf Account page (http://www.makeuseof.com/game/), but it’s severely limited.
I see we can get points for commenting; can a “comment” be a question about an article? I see we can earn points by answering questions; if my answer is incorrect or incomplete, do I still get 10 points, or just some of the points, or no points? Who decides? I see points are awarded for sharing an article; I shared an article on facebook that showed up on my profile page but not in the News Feed (a problem I constantly have with fb), will I still get the points? Finally, what, specifically, are the “daily limits?”
If a page with answers to these questions exists, will someone kindly direct me to it? If no such page exists yet, I hope it soon will.
Thanks.
You receive points for commenting and for answering questions, period. We do filter comments and questions, but you don’t necessarily receive more for a longer comment. Though we do provide opportunities to earn more points at certain times. i.e. (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/help-needed-tell-us-your-favorite-android-games-win-150-reward-points/)
You should receive points for Facebook shares, period.
And as for the limits, well, they are a secret. We can’t make it toooooo easy.
Peter, you’re probably trying to read too much into it. If you comment, you get points; if you answer, you get points. Right now it doesn’t get more in-depth than that, however we are planning to add the facility to assign “best answers” or let users vote on comments etc; we’ll tell you about those if and when the times comes though. Also, if you share using the buttons on the page, you will get points.
Caveats: we have spam filters in place. There is a specified cool down between events, and a minimum word count (so “cool article man” wont get points because its a worthless comment); as well as a daily limit on how many times an action can be taken. We won’t go into detail with those because it encourages abuse; we DO get people who load up a bunch of articles and share them all just for the points, and they do go on a commenting rampage with one or two word pointless comments, all posted within seconds of each other. So just know that there are things in place to prevent this, but it wont affect regular users.
Basically, comment as you normally would, help people out on answers, share articles actively but responsibly, and your points will go up.
This is brilliant. Granted, who knows if the increased traffic revenue really justifies these discounts but it is a great incentive to help out.
amazing ways to use MUO’s points !!
Thank you this is very helpful for dealing with the points system.
great review.made my choice really easy
