India Bans Access to Online Porn

India has effectively banned online porn, ordering ISPs around the country to block access to sexually explicit websites. In total, more than 800 websites have been blocked, including Adult Friend Finder and Fleshbot. The full list of sites affected has been posted online by the Center for Internet & Society.

The Indian Government has instituted the ban using “Rule 12″ of the country’s “IT Act”. This states that websites can be blocked when it’s “necessary or expedient so to do in the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, security of the State, friendly relations with foreign states or public order or for preventing incitement to the commission of any cognizable offence relating to above”.

The vagueness of this statement arguably gives the Indian Government the power to ban any site to which it takes a dislike. However, the authorities still need to explain their reasons for banning sites within 30 days of doing so, and some people are already contesting that this represents a violation of the right to personal liberty.

Amazon Cracks Down on Prime Sharing

Amazon has changed its rules on sharing Prime with others. Previously, up to four adults could all share the same account, meaning you could split the $99/year cost with three friends. Now, you can only share it with one friend, or, more likely than not, partner.

To prevent people taking liberties with this element, Amazon is also insisting that credit cards and debit cards associated with the account get shared between users. So, while both parties can use their own card, they will also have access to the other person’s card.

This, coupled with the need to share the same shipping address, should prevent people from splitting the cost of Amazon Prime Is Amazon Prime A Good Deal? Is Amazon Prime A Good Deal? There is a surviving strain of Victorianism in India, apparently. Although prosecutions under the law are rare, there is currently a reinstatement of the colonial-era prohibition of "homosexual activity." I would have expected that the rich sexuality of the Indian culture would have found a celebration and positive, joyous expression today, unencumbered by these laws.
