In A Nutshell, How Would You Describe MakeUseOf To A Friend? [You Told Us]

MakeUseOf is changing, as you may have noticed from the recent redesign. We’re still offering content covering the Internet, Windows, iOS, Hardware, and Social Media, to name just a few of the topics in our remit, but we’re evolving to better serve you, the loyal MakeUseOf readership.

As part of this process of trying to understand what you want from the site and what we can do better as a result, we thought it would be fun to find out how you (would) recommend us to your friends. We obviously hope you have already told your friends and family of our existence, but if you haven’t done so then now is as good a time as any.

Done? Then read on to find out what we learned during last week’s We Ask You discussion.

The Results

We asked you, In A Nutshell, How Would You Describe MakeUseOf To A Friend? We got a good number of responses to the question, and most of the commenters offered positive soundbites which they use to tell their friends about our existence. Some were less generous, using the opportunity to rail against the recent changes, which is fair enough.

Rather than list the best of the soundbites, which can all be read in their entirety in the comments thread linked to above, we felt it was more prudent to focus in on some of the keywords and phrases which cropped up. Those highlighted below are ones we’re proud to have associated with our website.

MakeUseOf… “instructional,” “strong technology focus,” “go-to site,” “a great teaching tool,” “gadgets and geekery,” “user friendly,” “full of interesting tips and tricks,” “for geeks, nerds, gamers, and computer freaks,” “visually exciting and comprehensive,” “great source for IT info, “practical and entertaining.”

If you have any more comments you’d like to add then feel free to do so at the end of this article. Like a less scary version of the NSA, we’re always listening.

Comment Of The Week

We had great input from the likes of Devon, Dennis Phillips, and Carolann, to name just a few. Comment Of The Week goes to Charlene F, who, as well as the respect of myself and hopefully everybody reading this, receives a T-shirt chosen from those available through MakeUseOf Rewards for this comment:

MakeUseOf is the most productive way to waste time. It’s like a bible for technology lovers.

We liked this comment because those two short sentences say it all. While our content may, on occasion, help you save time, it mostly offers you a productive way of wasting time. And while referring to a religious text may not be politically correct, it’s a positive analogy we’ll accept with absolute pleasure.

We will be asking a new question tomorrow, so please join us then. We Ask You is a weekly column dedicated to finding out the opinions of MakeUseOf readers. We ask you a question and you tell us what you think. The question is open-ended and is usually open to debate. Some questions will be purely opinion-based, while others will see you sharing tips and advice, or advocating tools and apps to the MakeUseOf readership. This column is nothing without your input, all of which is valued.

Gahh! That’s me. I’m honoured! I have no idea how to claim the t-shirt though. Rewards won’t give me the option for some reason?

Jackson will be in touch via email to offer you the T-shirt, so don’t worry about trying to claim it through Rewards.

However, not a fan of the new layout.

Thanks for the description. We’re sorry to hear you’re not a fan of the new layout. It’s designed to make the site easier to use, but obviously not everyone is finding it does so. We are listening and we are making subtle changes.

In a nutshell, to make use of the best tool instead of making use of just any tool make use of MakeUseOf.
