imo.im Offers A New Import Service For Meebo Users [Updates]

If you’re a regular Meebo user, you probably know that the service’s days are numbered. After being recently purchased by Google, the IM service will be shutting down on July 11. There are several alternatives to Meebo out there, one of which is the multi-protocol service imo.im. Recently, imo.im has decided to embrace Meebo users by offering a quick and easy way to import Meebo chat logs into its own interface. This way, not only will your old chat history be saved, you will have constant access to it from your current client.

So what is imo.im exactly? The imo.im service is a web-based IM chat client which supports 11 popular protocols such as MSN, Skype, Facebook, Google Talk and others. In mobile services, imo.im offers clients for Android, iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Nokia (Symbian). If you want to try out imo.im as your Meebo replacement, here is what you have to do in order to import your history.

First, log on to Meebo at www.meebo.com/chatlog-download to download your chat logs. Make sure you know where you saved the log files. Next, sign in on imo.im with all the accounts you want to import your history to. In imo.im, go to the Accounts menu and choose Preferences –> Import Chat History. Now choose the file you saved previously and select “Import”.

You should now have your Meebo logs in imo.im, and hopefully, you’d be able to continue enjoying your chats as if nothing ever happened. For more information on this feature, watch this video or click here.

Are you a Meebo user? What do you plan to do when it shuts down?

I made the switch from Meebo to IMO and while I like Meebo better, it is a suitable replacement.

Nice. What makes it your preferred Meebo substitute?

I made the switch to Imo way back. I prefer Imo in many ways, but one most important feature is to support Skype chat protocol (only chat though) gets it much ahead of competition.
    Never liked Meebo as much.

Skype support really is important these days. I find myself using Skype chat more than I use any other IM lately.
