If you love maps, you’re going to love this. There’s an easier way to create custom, personalized maps than with Google Maps. Although Google Maps is a notably powerful service and resource, it may not be “easy as pie” to create custom maps with whatever tools you’d like. Thankfully, a service like ikiMap exists to make that task easier. The best part? ikiMap can still use the vast resources of Google Maps (as well as others).

create your own custom map

Creating maps on ikiMap is so easy that the site brags about how anyone who can register for the site can create their own maps. Don’t let that fool you though, as you still have plenty of power under your fingertips. You can add your usual marks, lines, polygons, and so on, but you can also change colors, transparency, thickness, and more.

You don’t have to start from scratch every time either – you can import Google Earth files in .klm or .klz format, GPS record tracks in .gpx format, and GIS shape files in .shp format. You can also collaborate on your maps and merge them with maps made by others. Of course, you can also set your map to public or private viewing. It’s also great that any map can switch between different APIs from Google Maps, Bing Maps, and OpenStreetMaps.

Features:

  • Create custom maps with marks, lines, polygons, etc.
  • Additional customization features of your map items.
  • Use other people’s maps or import from multiple formats.
  • Collaborate on maps and keep public or private.
  • Switch between multiple map APIs while viewing.
  • Similar tools: GmapGIS, MapFab, MapTiler, Animaps, Mapbiquity and Targetmap.

The example map shown in the post highlights a common problem with these map apps. You can plot UK but not Scotland, England, Wales and N Ireland separately. The map is misleading as it implies that UK was competing at Euro 2012 finals, unfortunately it was only England.
